The car ride back to Raymond's house was quiet. Although Julia had not acted like a typical young heiress, he was certain she couldn't endure his house, yet Raymond had no intention of changing houses. After all, he would be ruining his plans by doing that.
So when they got to his house, and he opened the door, he turned to her, "The house is clean, but since the marriage was on such short notice, I would only try to do some renovations tomorrow," he explained politely.
Julia nodded in understanding, "I'm going to be in school often. You don't have to change things around here,"
Raymond stared down at the expressionless woman right in front of him. She was totally different from the girl in his research. Could she be pretending or something? Raymond disputed the thought and stared back at Julia, whose eyes were roaming around the small old house.
"Let me just show you to your room”, He added.
Julia nodded lightly.
Raymond took her box and led the way.
She reluctantly followed him. Raymond stopped in front of one of the doors and pushed it open, revealing a small room.
"If you need anything, do well to call for me”, He added in an instant.
Julia nodded quietly, and with that, Raymond left. She watched his retreating figure as it walked completely out of her sight.
She walked deeper into the room with her eyes scanning through the whole place. Just like she had expected, it was nothing compared to her room in the Brooks Mansion. It couldn't even be compared to their basement, but she felt it wasn’t too terrible. It was plain and cosy. She could work on it.
She sat at the foot of the bed and used that moment to gather up her thoughts. If this were a year before now, she would not have agreed to marry a man that seemed like he was close to dying. She had, after all, lived as a rich heiress all her life. Also, she had always held plans for a grand wedding.
However, just one day had brought everything that she wanted crashing down, and Julia had started to understand that there was so much more to life than being a rich heiress. When she had sensed how desperate her sister was to set her up with Raymond, she had decided to go along with the plan.
She had decided to go along with it. To her, she had felt like this was something that she could agree to. When she was done with school, it would be easy for her to come out from it.
Also, it felt nice not to have to deal with her mother and sister for one night. As her mind drifted to Raymond, she slept off.
By the time she woke up, it was already dark. She shuffled her feet into her slippers lying at the foot of the bed and found her way out of the room. She was welcomed by the sweet aroma that hung thick in the air. She knew the cooking was done by Raymond since there was nobody in the house apart from the two of them.
Raymond happened to walk out of the kitchen with a tray in his hand. He had changed from the clothes that Julia last saw him in. He was wearing a casual V-neck shirt and black pants.
"You are up," Raymond said casually and placed the tray on the small rounded dining table.
Raymond must have checked in on her and found her asleep. Julia never bothered to say a thing, but rather she grabbed the nearest chair and took a seat. She grabbed the cutlery lying on the knitted cloth and shoved the spoon into the porridge, which surprised Raymond.
He hadn’t asked her to join him yet, and he also never expected her to eat a meal that was this bland, especially when it was porridge. He thought she would only be interested in eating steaks and all the likes.
Raymond took the seat across from her, watching her every minute. Something was wrong, but he couldn't point out what was specifically wrong.
Julia ate quietly without looking at the man in front of her, and that got Raymond more curious. The Julia he researched about was a pampered heiress. She had lacked love from her family and used to transfer that anger to the people around her. But this Julia was different. She didn't seem to care if she was loved or hated by anyone, not even the dying man she had married.
Instead of the ill-tempered and obsessive woman that he thought he had married based on his investigations, he felt that she was nothing close to that.
The whole house was quiet, and only the little faint sound of cutlery clacking the plates was heard.
Even though it was their first night together, it didn't feel that way. They were just like neighbours.. like distant neighbours.
Raymond started to talk in an attempt to try to cover up the awkward silence while also trying to gather more information about her.
"Why did you agree to live with me?
She raised her face and looked at him with a blank expression, and muttered just four words, "I just want to,”
That reply bothered Raymond even more.
Is she trying to play games with me? Raymond thought. Or probably she was acting rude and tough. One of the general traits of the Brooks family is pride. He thought Julia would be different but seems like she started showing her true colours.
She finished up her porridge and started to walk in the direction of her room without even muttering a simple Thank you.
Raymond was left speechless as he watched his newly wedded wife rudely walk out after finishing up her meal.
Did she just leave the dishes for him to wash?
Raymond didn’t mind washing the dishes earlier, but seeing her being rude suddenly provoked him.
"Are you not going to do the dishes? He stopped her in her tracks.
Julia, who was almost at her door, tilted her head at him and stared at him for less than three seconds.
Without saying a word, she walked into her room, leaving Raymond hanging.
Raymond had always been treated like trash by the Winstons, but he never expected that he would be treated the same by his wife. After all, he got married into the Brooks family, so right now, Julia is the head of the family. He took the dishes and dumped them into the old sink, and began to wash.
Raymond began to wash in anger but suddenly slumped. Luckily Julia found him on time. Julia didn't seem to be moved by the fact that Raymond was lying unconsciously on the kitchen floor. Rather, she dragged him out of the small-sized kitchen with the little energy she had.
She took off his shirt, allowing him to have access to some fresh air. She proceeded and did some little medical work on him. After some minutes, Julia was done. She stared at the digital wall clock, and in five seconds, Raymond's eyes gradually opened.
Raymond's eyes were weak and blurry, but he knew that the reason was that he just had another seizure. His blurry eyes got clearer, and he saw a familiar figure in front of him, it turned out to be Julia.
Did she just wake me up? He was startled but kept it to himself.
"What did you do? He sat upright, grabbing his shirt that was lying casually on the floor.
He never expected Julia to know anything about his sickness or his medical care. Julia waking him up was a shock to him. Did the Brooks know she had this ability?
Julia stood quiet without bothering to say a thing. Rather, she stared closely at the dying man in front of her. His organs were getting weaker, and he could give up anytime soon if he didn't receive proper care.
"I think I just asked a question. What on earth did you do to wake me up without any earlier lessons? His voice was stern and harsh, but Julia never seemed to be bothered by it.
Instead, she muttered casually without a stain of fear on her face. "You are going to die soon".
Her husband would be dying, and she would become a widow at a very tender age, but she didn't seem to be bothered by that.
Raymond, on the other hand, looked calm since he already knew about it. His plan was to use his remaining one year to get revenge on all the people that had hurt him and his mother. The poison in his body was far too deep in his bones and organs to be cured.
After spending the last three years searching for a cure, despite the vast wealth he had amassed in the last five years, Raymond had been unable to find a cure or someone that could cure him, and so Julia’s next words shocked him out of his mind.
"You have less than a year left, but I know someone that can cure you and, in return, divorce me, Mr. Raymond Winston"
Julia had gone back to bed last night, leaving Raymond to his thoughts. As for Raymond, he felt like he had married a different woman entirely. Just who had influenced the news that his men had gathered? From what he remembered, Julia had demanded that she wanted to marry him after hearing about his good looks. But now she had demanded for a divorce? His lips curled up as he felt like his living conditions had made her change her mind.On the other hand, he was also worried about how she was able to revive him after he collapsed. She seemed confident about him being curable. Did she know the nature of his sickness, or was she just bluffing? After all, this was something that the medical specialists were not capable of doing for years. Seeing a nineteen years old lady confidently saying she could do it made him begin to wonder if she was serious or perhaps his life was some kind of joke to her. After using his meds, he was able to get some sleep, and he woke up to make breakfast for bo
The Brooks family made sure they invited all their business associates and the top men in society to grace the special day of their daughter. They made sure no one was left out. Those who gave excuses for their absence were also in attendance. They had convinced them until they gave in to their request. Everything was set for the party, but the couples were yet to arrive. It wasn't a cause for alarm for the family because they felt, the couples were preparing to arrive in a grand style. Stella had wanted to get Julian's dress, but her mother asked her to discard the idea, saying Julian would sort herself. The grand hall which was family and rented was gradually getting filled with the invited guests. Soft music rented the air as the invitees chatted over a glass of wine as they awaited the couples. Meanwhile, back at Raymond's apartment, Julian stood across the room with her gaze fixed on him. He was wearing a simple wine shirt and well-tailored black pants to go wit
When Julian excused herself, Raymond decided to stretch his legs, which were aching because he had been sitting for too long. He had nowhere in mind to go, so he decided to take a tour around the hall. He had barely walked for a minute when Stella walked up to him with the gift box. “I see you liked your present,” he said offhandedly and she nodded. “I appreciate your effort to impress your in-laws” she replied. Raymond bit his lips as he nodded slowly. If only Stella had known who he was really, she wouldn't have said that to him. “I'm glad I was able to do that,” he said as he beckoned to a waiter who was nearby. He picked up two glasses, then handed one to Stella, which she accepted. “Thank you,” she said with a smile before taking a sip of the wine. They remained in their positions without a word to each other. After a while, Stella smacked her lips to get Raymond's attention. She didn't start speaking until he had his gaze fixed on her. “Tell me, how did you
By the time they returned home, it was already late. Julia tossed Raymond's jacket on the couch, then walked across the room. Raymond considered it rude, but he didn't say a word concerning it, instead, he asked. “You're hungry?” “Yes, but I don't eat late” she replied nonchalantly then resumed her walk. After picking up his jacket, he made his way toward the kitchen. With all the ingredients in place, he was able to get a nice dinner, which he ate with relish. After washing up, he picked up his phone, which was lying across the table. He watched the video several times before tossing his phone aside again. He was convinced that the woman had a grudge against Julia, that's why she did what she did. Several seconds later, he was out of the kitchen and was heading to his room to retire for the night. Meanwhile, Julia lay on her bed as she stared at the ceiling. She was running through the event of her engagement party in her head. If not for the midwife who decided t
Raymond's receptionist began to panic when the ambulance did not arrive on time. She tried to call, but her service line was barred. Leaving the office to go and seek help was the next thing that came to her mind, but she was scared that something bad might happen to him. When she couldn't handle it anymore, she dashed out of his office, only to return moments later. “Hey” she yelled, hoping he would stir, but he was still immobile. Taking his hand, she checked his pulse for the hundredth time. “His pulse is getting lower at an alarming rate and the ambulance is not here yet” she groaned, picking up her phone. In frustration, she tossed the phone aside, then rose from her kneeling position. She took one last look at the immobile body of her boss, then dashed out of the office. Just as she was about to run into the street, she heard the ambulance siren approaching. Relieved, she began to wave her hand frantically in the air to get their attention. “This way” she called out to
Immediately after the doctor came out of the waiting room, and Niko and Adam ran to his side to make inquiries about his health. As usual, he had a negative reply, so they weren't surprised. Raymond was staring into space when his friends joined him. No one said a word to him at first, but when Adam could not contain his anger, he balled his palm into a fist before sending it into the soft bed. “I was already done before it happened,” Raymond said. “If you had taken a break when I asked you to, this wouldn't have happened. Having less than a year left doesn't mean you should try to shorten it” Adam scowled. “I need to achieve my goals before then…” Niko did not allow him to complete his words before he cut in. “Adam is right. Overworking yourself is going to endanger your health the more” “Okay,” Raymond replied to put an end to their advice. If he allowed them to have their way, they wouldn't stop talking. The ward was silent for a while as each one had separate thoug
Immediately the clock chimed 4 am, Raymond sat up in his bed. For more than ten years now, he had been waking up by 4 am each day. His body was now used to the timing that even if he didn't set an alarm, he would be awake by 4 am. He climbed out of bed, then walked straight into the bathroom to wash his sleepy face before he commenced work for the day. When he was done, he returned to his room and did some stretches before settling on his laptop, which was on his desk. Since he skipped work the previous day, he had an extra workload, so he felt that to accomplish his day's goal, he needed to start earlier. He ought to meditate for thirty minutes, but since he didn't do a thing the previous day, he had to skip that daily ritual. For more than three hours, his eyes were fixed on his screen as he went through business proposals, deals, and deadlines that he had to beat. He only realized the time had gone far when his phone began to buzz. It was Niko on the line. “Hey,”
At school, Julia refused to speak to anyone, not to talk of engage in class discussion. She was in her world thinking of the topmost issue on her mind. Ever since Raymond slumped at work due to his boss overworking him, that was two months ago, Julia had been mapping out ways how to get him out of his workplace. She wanted him to work somewhere that his health issue would be placed into consideration and not the other way around. If anything happens to him, the company he works for would only send a condolence letter and some amount of money, and that was all. Julia didn't want that to happen. Even if he had barely a year to live, she didn't want his workplace to fast-forward his death. Unknowingly to him, she had visited several companies and firms to seek a good job for him but had found none. All seemed stressful to her and hence was not different from his former work. The previous night, when he had returned late from work, she tried to speak to him but when she
