Julia had gone back to bed last night, leaving Raymond to his thoughts.
As for Raymond, he felt like he had married a different woman entirely. Just who had influenced the news that his men had gathered? From what he remembered, Julia had demanded that she wanted to marry him after hearing about his good looks. But now she had demanded for a divorce?
His lips curled up as he felt like his living conditions had made her change her mind.
On the other hand, he was also worried about how she was able to revive him after he collapsed. She seemed confident about him being curable. Did she know the nature of his sickness, or was she just bluffing? After all, this was something that the medical specialists were not capable of doing for years. Seeing a nineteen years old lady confidently saying she could do it made him begin to wonder if she was serious or perhaps his life was some kind of joke to her.
After using his meds, he was able to get some sleep, and he woke up to make breakfast for both of them. However, he also made a mental note that it was going to be the last meal that he would make for her.
Sure enough, not long after he was done making breakfast, Julia walked into the dining room and sat opposite him. After a curt good morning, she served herself breakfast, and Raymond watched her, his gaze hooded and not showing his emotions.
"I agree but on one condition,” Raymond started, breaking the silence. Julia looked up, understanding that he was giving her a reply to her demand from last night.
Julia raised her brows. She wasn't expecting him to lay any condition because, obviously, He was the one who needed her the most.
"What condition? Julia managed to ask while looking at him closely.
“We have to stay married for the one year that people expect me to die. Also, whomever it is that is curing me has to keep it a secret…”
“That’s two conditions now,” Julia interrupted, her lips curled up in a small smile. She was starting ti suspect that there was more to this man than what her sister had thought. Even though she didn’t know now, she was going to find out eventually.
Raymond said nothing, as someone that was used to negotiating with several companies and powerful men, he understood that the both of them needed each other and he didn’t need to give her the upper hand.
“That’s fine, I’ll take you to the person later this week,” Julia said caving in like Raymond guessed.
The rest of their breakfast was silent and Raymond went inside to change after calling his men to prepare the car. Before moving back to the country, he had spent the last eight months building another headquarters here. While it was a little difficult because he had a lot of money, they had finalized the moving and now, Vertex Corporations now had a branch in the country that was already running properly.
As soon as he stepped out into the living room, he saw Julia all dressed and seated with her phone. She looked up as soon as he walked in. “My mother just called. To not ruin the family’s reputation, they have told the public that today is our engagement, also, there will be a banquet this evening to celebrate the engagement between both families.”
Raymond’s aura turned several degrees colder as he thought of returning to her family for the banquet, however, he also understood that this wasn’t something that they could escape from forever, so he nodded.
“I have an interview to go to. I’ll come back in time for us to go together,” Raymond replied and then left the house. Julia looked at his broad and strong back for a while before looking away.
She still had classes to attend, and also, she still had to design enough clothes to get her father’s recognition. In the past, she had always felt that she didn’t need to compete with her sister. After all, both of them would eventually get the shares from the company. However, after eavesdropping on a conversation recently, she discovered that her ‘mother’ was not her biological mother.
It had explained why her sister always so the need to shine brighter than her and why her mother would always have a dismissive reaction when it mattered concerning her. However, she felt her heart turn cold upon knowing the sinister plot they had in plan for her.
Because of that, when her sister had shown her a picture of Raymond, she had played along quickly, afraid that she would lose her life if she stayed in their house further.
Now that they had to return, she knew that her stepmother and stepsister would definitely make trouble for them!
While Julia was thinking about the trouble ahead, Raymond had just arrived at his company. Niko and Adams were both waiting on the base floor for him.
“You said there was progress. Update me on everything that happened yesterday before the meeting,” he told the both of them. Niko was the one that he had placed in charge of all the matters happening here. Since Vertex was a company that had a global reputation, Niko had become the face of this branch, while Raymond had plans to remain in the background.
As the three of them entered the executive elevator, Niko gave Raymond a brief update on what happened with the project the day before, and the three of them, together with Adams, already knew what they were going to discuss in the meeting before going in.
Just like promised, as soon as Niko finished with the meeting, he delegated the remaining tasks to the two of them and left the office. Watching his lonely back, Niko sighed, unhappy with what his friend had to go through.
As the poison had been a slow-acting one, the three of them had no idea until it had gone deep into his organs. By that time, it was beyond anything that medical intervention could handle. Instead of feeling dejected, Raymonds had worked even harder, climbing into the rank of the world’s richest men.
Now, he had just one wish left, and as much as it pained them, the two of them wanted to help him as much as they could.
By the time Raymond got home, the entire house was completely empty, a sharp contrast from this morning when he was leaving the house. He frowned slightly as he looked at the time, noting that it was already 6 pm in the evening.
Despite their conversation earlier that day, the both of them had not exchanged numbers, so he had no choice but to knock on her door. Julia opened before his hand met with the door the second time, and Raymond's eyes widened slightly at her appearance.
Dressed in a wine dress that hugged all of her curves perfectly with her hair packed up in a loose bun, Julia’s already stunning look was taken to another level.
“I thought you weren’t home, and since I don’t have your number, I had no choice than this,” Raymond said with a shrug as he regained control of his emotions.
“Since it’s our engagement party, the show can’t start without us. It’s okay to be a little late,” Julia replied with a small smile. In a way, he could sense that she seemed to be quite eager about this engagement banquet.
The more he interacted with her, the more Raymond felt like he really couldn’t understand his ‘wife’. He left to get ready too, and pulled out his phone the moment he got to his room.
“Adams, prepare a gift that is worthy of the Brooks family,” since they were going there together and it was their engagement, he wanted to send them a gift from his company to see their reaction. Since his family wanted to depend on them, the first step in his plan was to take this support away from them. Only after then would the game begin.
Even though he could crush them in one full move, after what he had suffered at their hands, Raymond wanted a game. He wanted to watch them fall to their knees and only realize after that he was the one behind it.
“Also, send two men to bring it. Something grand and elaborate.”
The Brooks family made sure they invited all their business associates and the top men in society to grace the special day of their daughter. They made sure no one was left out. Those who gave excuses for their absence were also in attendance. They had convinced them until they gave in to their request. Everything was set for the party, but the couples were yet to arrive. It wasn't a cause for alarm for the family because they felt, the couples were preparing to arrive in a grand style. Stella had wanted to get Julian's dress, but her mother asked her to discard the idea, saying Julian would sort herself. The grand hall which was family and rented was gradually getting filled with the invited guests. Soft music rented the air as the invitees chatted over a glass of wine as they awaited the couples. Meanwhile, back at Raymond's apartment, Julian stood across the room with her gaze fixed on him. He was wearing a simple wine shirt and well-tailored black pants to go wit
When Julian excused herself, Raymond decided to stretch his legs, which were aching because he had been sitting for too long. He had nowhere in mind to go, so he decided to take a tour around the hall. He had barely walked for a minute when Stella walked up to him with the gift box. “I see you liked your present,” he said offhandedly and she nodded. “I appreciate your effort to impress your in-laws” she replied. Raymond bit his lips as he nodded slowly. If only Stella had known who he was really, she wouldn't have said that to him. “I'm glad I was able to do that,” he said as he beckoned to a waiter who was nearby. He picked up two glasses, then handed one to Stella, which she accepted. “Thank you,” she said with a smile before taking a sip of the wine. They remained in their positions without a word to each other. After a while, Stella smacked her lips to get Raymond's attention. She didn't start speaking until he had his gaze fixed on her. “Tell me, how did you
By the time they returned home, it was already late. Julia tossed Raymond's jacket on the couch, then walked across the room. Raymond considered it rude, but he didn't say a word concerning it, instead, he asked. “You're hungry?” “Yes, but I don't eat late” she replied nonchalantly then resumed her walk. After picking up his jacket, he made his way toward the kitchen. With all the ingredients in place, he was able to get a nice dinner, which he ate with relish. After washing up, he picked up his phone, which was lying across the table. He watched the video several times before tossing his phone aside again. He was convinced that the woman had a grudge against Julia, that's why she did what she did. Several seconds later, he was out of the kitchen and was heading to his room to retire for the night. Meanwhile, Julia lay on her bed as she stared at the ceiling. She was running through the event of her engagement party in her head. If not for the midwife who decided t
Raymond's receptionist began to panic when the ambulance did not arrive on time. She tried to call, but her service line was barred. Leaving the office to go and seek help was the next thing that came to her mind, but she was scared that something bad might happen to him. When she couldn't handle it anymore, she dashed out of his office, only to return moments later. “Hey” she yelled, hoping he would stir, but he was still immobile. Taking his hand, she checked his pulse for the hundredth time. “His pulse is getting lower at an alarming rate and the ambulance is not here yet” she groaned, picking up her phone. In frustration, she tossed the phone aside, then rose from her kneeling position. She took one last look at the immobile body of her boss, then dashed out of the office. Just as she was about to run into the street, she heard the ambulance siren approaching. Relieved, she began to wave her hand frantically in the air to get their attention. “This way” she called out to
Immediately after the doctor came out of the waiting room, and Niko and Adam ran to his side to make inquiries about his health. As usual, he had a negative reply, so they weren't surprised. Raymond was staring into space when his friends joined him. No one said a word to him at first, but when Adam could not contain his anger, he balled his palm into a fist before sending it into the soft bed. “I was already done before it happened,” Raymond said. “If you had taken a break when I asked you to, this wouldn't have happened. Having less than a year left doesn't mean you should try to shorten it” Adam scowled. “I need to achieve my goals before then…” Niko did not allow him to complete his words before he cut in. “Adam is right. Overworking yourself is going to endanger your health the more” “Okay,” Raymond replied to put an end to their advice. If he allowed them to have their way, they wouldn't stop talking. The ward was silent for a while as each one had separate thoug
Immediately the clock chimed 4 am, Raymond sat up in his bed. For more than ten years now, he had been waking up by 4 am each day. His body was now used to the timing that even if he didn't set an alarm, he would be awake by 4 am. He climbed out of bed, then walked straight into the bathroom to wash his sleepy face before he commenced work for the day. When he was done, he returned to his room and did some stretches before settling on his laptop, which was on his desk. Since he skipped work the previous day, he had an extra workload, so he felt that to accomplish his day's goal, he needed to start earlier. He ought to meditate for thirty minutes, but since he didn't do a thing the previous day, he had to skip that daily ritual. For more than three hours, his eyes were fixed on his screen as he went through business proposals, deals, and deadlines that he had to beat. He only realized the time had gone far when his phone began to buzz. It was Niko on the line. “Hey,”
At school, Julia refused to speak to anyone, not to talk of engage in class discussion. She was in her world thinking of the topmost issue on her mind. Ever since Raymond slumped at work due to his boss overworking him, that was two months ago, Julia had been mapping out ways how to get him out of his workplace. She wanted him to work somewhere that his health issue would be placed into consideration and not the other way around. If anything happens to him, the company he works for would only send a condolence letter and some amount of money, and that was all. Julia didn't want that to happen. Even if he had barely a year to live, she didn't want his workplace to fast-forward his death. Unknowingly to him, she had visited several companies and firms to seek a good job for him but had found none. All seemed stressful to her and hence was not different from his former work. The previous night, when he had returned late from work, she tried to speak to him but when she
With a racing heart, Julia got into the cab she had flagged down. Raymond was at work; hence there was no point telling him her whereabouts, in fact, that was a bonus because she didn't want him to know what she was up to. She was going to be snappy with the conversation with her father so that she would return before he did. To keep her mind alert, she began to think about the kind of job Raymond engages in. “What kind of job requires a man to wear tuxedos and blazers every day? Receptionist, PA, Banker, Doctor…” she thought When she couldn't take it anymore, she said, “What if he's just dressing that way so that he won't be mocked by his peers and most, especially my family? Who knows if he is a mechanic or a bricklayer?” She scoffed as she snapped her fingers in anger. “Are you speaking to me?” The driver asked as he peered at the rear mirror. “I didn't pay for a ride to engage you in a conversation” she retorted angrily The driver just sighed, then returned his gaze
