The Brooks family made sure they invited all their business associates and the top men in society to grace the special day of their daughter.
They made sure no one was left out.
Those who gave excuses for their absence were also in attendance. They had convinced them until they gave in to their request.
Everything was set for the party, but the couples were yet to arrive.
It wasn't a cause for alarm for the family because they felt, the couples were preparing to arrive in a grand style.
Stella had wanted to get Julian's dress, but her mother asked her to discard the idea, saying Julian would sort herself.
The grand hall which was family and rented was gradually getting filled with the invited guests.
Soft music rented the air as the invitees chatted over a glass of wine as they awaited the couples.
Meanwhile, back at Raymond's apartment, Julian stood across the room with her gaze fixed on him.
He was wearing a simple wine shirt and well-tailored black pants to go with.
His shoes weren't from the Dior, Prada, or Louis Vuitton companies, but it wasn't bad.
Even in his casual attire, he still managed to look attractive to Julian, just like she had thought the first time he saw him.
As he was removing unseen specks of dust from his pants, Julian walked up to him.
Raymond veered backward, but she grabbed his neck, and removed the thread that was stuck to his mustache before letting go of his neck.
“Thanks” he muttered, but she didn't respond.
She grabbed her purse.
When she turned her gaze to him, he knew what she wanted.
“Let's go,” he said as he stretched out his hands towards her.
When she didn't take his hand, he grabbed her hand, then led her to the exit.
Meanwhile, the Brooks family had just received a gift from two men who claimed to be from Vertex Corporations.
Curious to find out what the gift was, Julian's father unwrapped the carton, revealing three gold boxes, the boxes had names each.
He took his, same with his wife and then Stella.
The invitees who were as curious as they were stopped chatting, then fixed their gaze on them.
Stella was the first to open her box.
With widened eyes, she screamed in excitement.
The box, which was actually a jewelry box, contained customized golden bracelets, necklaces, rings, anklets, and several other jewelry pieces.
When her parents did the same, it turns out they received customized pieces of jewelry too.
They were surprised and suspicious of the gifts.
The guests were wondering how they got to receive gifts from Vertex Corporations and began to envy them.
“He looks surprised” someone whispered to her friend who was sitting beside her
“I don't believe him. He had something up his sleeves. Brook's not a straightforward man, he always has loopholes” her friend retorted.
Other people began to express their thoughts, although in low tones.
“Mother, I hope Julian and her husband don't intend to keep us waiting all day” Stella scoffed with the box under her arm
“Let's wait a little longer,” her mother said dismissively
She wasn't in the mood to speak as she was brainstorming who the person could be.
Minutes later, Raymond and his wife walked in.
Their attire was simple, but it caught the attention of the guests present.
As they walked down the aisle to the table they had prepared for them, the invitees clapped as they cheered them loudly.
Julian crested her brows.
She wondered why Stella didn't stop her parents from spending her fortune on her.
Before they could take their seats, Julian's father walked up to them with the box in his hand.
“Do you have any idea about this?” He asked with a doubting tone.
Raymond smirked at his tone before taking a deep sigh.
“I sent the gifts. I hope we get along as families” he smirked, tightening the grip on Julian's hand.
Julian passed him a glance, but she didn't show if she was surprised, but deep down, she was.
“How? You borrowed money to impress us?” Julian's mom scoffed.
“I didn't” he responded
He helped Julian to take her seat before doing the same.
There was a commotion in the hall.
No one wanted to believe Raymond was capable of gifting his in–laws with expensive items.
Although still shocked, her parents didn't say anything to them, instead, they kick-started the party.
Stella, on her part, couldn't take her eyes off Raymond.
She felt there was something she needed to know, but couldn't pinpoint what it was.
“If only I was in good terms with Julian, I would have gotten first-hand information about these gifts,” she said to her three friends who had accompanied her to Julian's room earlier.
“Julian's husband doesn't have the money to get such expensive gifts. He must have borrowed it and guess what…” one of her friends said, leaving the others in suspense.
Satisfied with the attention she had gotten, she said,
“Julian will be the victim. Remember, he has just a little more time to live” she smirked
“That's true” Stella smirked as a smile made its way to his lips.
The engagement party was going on smoothly.
The couples were in a different world of their own as they watched the invitees eating and drinking.
Julian was busy playing games on her phone, while Raymond, on the other hand, took note of all the proceedings at the party.
“Do you want a drink?” Raymond asked for the hundredth time.
“No” she snapped.
“Keep your phone down,” he said for the hundredth time also.
“I won't” she responded.
Fed up with her attitude, Raymond continued watching the scene.
Moments later, Julian rose.
“Where are you heading?” Raymond asked with her eyes fixed on her expressionless face.
“I need to use the restroom” she replied
Without waiting for his response, she began to walk toward the restroom.
Not that she wanted to make use of the toilets, she just wanted to get away from the party to clear her head.
She was surprised about his gift, but she wasn't going to ask because she had already made up her mind that she was going to find out herself.
On her return, a midwife who was holding two glasses of red wine walked up to her.
Since Julian walked in earlier, the midwife had been staring at her with contempt.
She was jealous and wanted to ruin her day, but didn't know how to go about it.
When she saw her heading to the restroom, she wanted to go after her, but she changed her mind.
She was going to wait for her in that hall.
Immediately she saw Julian approaching, she grabbed two glasses of wine from the waiter's tray, then walked up to Julian with a smile.
“Congratulations,” the midwife said with a broad smile as she stretched the glass towards Julian for a toast.
“I'm okay,” Julian said monotone.
As she was about to leave, the midwife stepped on her overflowing white gown, then upturned the content of the glass on her gown.
“Oh my goodness, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to do that” the midwife said, feigning displeasure at the intentional act.
The invitees gasped at the scene, but there was nothing they could do.
Annoyed, Julian looked down at her soiled dressed as she wondered why she changed her wine dress for the white gown.
With over a hundred pairs of eyes staring back at her, Julian began to map out ways on how she would run out of the hall.
To her left was a spiral stair leading to the top of the building, and to her right was the exit.
The spiral stairs were closer, so she chose to use it.
As she was about to dash for it, Raymond walked up to her.
When Julian excused herself, Raymond decided to stretch his legs, which were aching because he had been sitting for too long. He had nowhere in mind to go, so he decided to take a tour around the hall. He had barely walked for a minute when Stella walked up to him with the gift box. “I see you liked your present,” he said offhandedly and she nodded. “I appreciate your effort to impress your in-laws” she replied. Raymond bit his lips as he nodded slowly. If only Stella had known who he was really, she wouldn't have said that to him. “I'm glad I was able to do that,” he said as he beckoned to a waiter who was nearby. He picked up two glasses, then handed one to Stella, which she accepted. “Thank you,” she said with a smile before taking a sip of the wine. They remained in their positions without a word to each other. After a while, Stella smacked her lips to get Raymond's attention. She didn't start speaking until he had his gaze fixed on her. “Tell me, how did you
By the time they returned home, it was already late. Julia tossed Raymond's jacket on the couch, then walked across the room. Raymond considered it rude, but he didn't say a word concerning it, instead, he asked. “You're hungry?” “Yes, but I don't eat late” she replied nonchalantly then resumed her walk. After picking up his jacket, he made his way toward the kitchen. With all the ingredients in place, he was able to get a nice dinner, which he ate with relish. After washing up, he picked up his phone, which was lying across the table. He watched the video several times before tossing his phone aside again. He was convinced that the woman had a grudge against Julia, that's why she did what she did. Several seconds later, he was out of the kitchen and was heading to his room to retire for the night. Meanwhile, Julia lay on her bed as she stared at the ceiling. She was running through the event of her engagement party in her head. If not for the midwife who decided t
Raymond's receptionist began to panic when the ambulance did not arrive on time. She tried to call, but her service line was barred. Leaving the office to go and seek help was the next thing that came to her mind, but she was scared that something bad might happen to him. When she couldn't handle it anymore, she dashed out of his office, only to return moments later. “Hey” she yelled, hoping he would stir, but he was still immobile. Taking his hand, she checked his pulse for the hundredth time. “His pulse is getting lower at an alarming rate and the ambulance is not here yet” she groaned, picking up her phone. In frustration, she tossed the phone aside, then rose from her kneeling position. She took one last look at the immobile body of her boss, then dashed out of the office. Just as she was about to run into the street, she heard the ambulance siren approaching. Relieved, she began to wave her hand frantically in the air to get their attention. “This way” she called out to
Immediately after the doctor came out of the waiting room, and Niko and Adam ran to his side to make inquiries about his health. As usual, he had a negative reply, so they weren't surprised. Raymond was staring into space when his friends joined him. No one said a word to him at first, but when Adam could not contain his anger, he balled his palm into a fist before sending it into the soft bed. “I was already done before it happened,” Raymond said. “If you had taken a break when I asked you to, this wouldn't have happened. Having less than a year left doesn't mean you should try to shorten it” Adam scowled. “I need to achieve my goals before then…” Niko did not allow him to complete his words before he cut in. “Adam is right. Overworking yourself is going to endanger your health the more” “Okay,” Raymond replied to put an end to their advice. If he allowed them to have their way, they wouldn't stop talking. The ward was silent for a while as each one had separate thoug
Immediately the clock chimed 4 am, Raymond sat up in his bed. For more than ten years now, he had been waking up by 4 am each day. His body was now used to the timing that even if he didn't set an alarm, he would be awake by 4 am. He climbed out of bed, then walked straight into the bathroom to wash his sleepy face before he commenced work for the day. When he was done, he returned to his room and did some stretches before settling on his laptop, which was on his desk. Since he skipped work the previous day, he had an extra workload, so he felt that to accomplish his day's goal, he needed to start earlier. He ought to meditate for thirty minutes, but since he didn't do a thing the previous day, he had to skip that daily ritual. For more than three hours, his eyes were fixed on his screen as he went through business proposals, deals, and deadlines that he had to beat. He only realized the time had gone far when his phone began to buzz. It was Niko on the line. “Hey,”
At school, Julia refused to speak to anyone, not to talk of engage in class discussion. She was in her world thinking of the topmost issue on her mind. Ever since Raymond slumped at work due to his boss overworking him, that was two months ago, Julia had been mapping out ways how to get him out of his workplace. She wanted him to work somewhere that his health issue would be placed into consideration and not the other way around. If anything happens to him, the company he works for would only send a condolence letter and some amount of money, and that was all. Julia didn't want that to happen. Even if he had barely a year to live, she didn't want his workplace to fast-forward his death. Unknowingly to him, she had visited several companies and firms to seek a good job for him but had found none. All seemed stressful to her and hence was not different from his former work. The previous night, when he had returned late from work, she tried to speak to him but when she
With a racing heart, Julia got into the cab she had flagged down. Raymond was at work; hence there was no point telling him her whereabouts, in fact, that was a bonus because she didn't want him to know what she was up to. She was going to be snappy with the conversation with her father so that she would return before he did. To keep her mind alert, she began to think about the kind of job Raymond engages in. “What kind of job requires a man to wear tuxedos and blazers every day? Receptionist, PA, Banker, Doctor…” she thought When she couldn't take it anymore, she said, “What if he's just dressing that way so that he won't be mocked by his peers and most, especially my family? Who knows if he is a mechanic or a bricklayer?” She scoffed as she snapped her fingers in anger. “Are you speaking to me?” The driver asked as he peered at the rear mirror. “I didn't pay for a ride to engage you in a conversation” she retorted angrily The driver just sighed, then returned his gaze
The footsteps ceased seconds later and the owner cleared his throat. Recognizing her father's voice, she relaxed, then released the breath she had been holding. A few seconds later, she began to hear another footstep, thinking it was Stella, she hissed but to her charging, it was her mom. “I'm sorry for keeping you waiting. I had a business deal to wrap” her father said as he helped his wife to sit before taking the spot beside her. “It's okay” Julia replied monotone She wished it were only her father who was in the living room with her because she feared her mom would pose a challenge to her. “I got worried when you said you wanted to see me last night, is everything alright?” Her father asked. “Yes father…” she was still speaking when her mom cut in “Then why did you text him? You are married now and so you have to express your worries to your husband and not your father” Swallowing her spittle, Julia propped herself up and maintained strong eye contact with her. If
