The gardeners who were nearby aided a dramatic and hysterical Penha coming out of the pool. It seems that being overweight and sedentary was what got in the way of her saving herself properly.

Penha reacted as if she were in quicksand. She bawled like a goat, affecting the gardeners' hearing. Aline had the feeling that Penha was exaggerating the situation to make her feel guilty.
