Chapter 003

On getting home, Brian ignored the usual insults and downgrading words from his in-laws and went straight to his wife, Lyra.

"My dear, why don't you just focus on the pitching to Zelyn Holdings, stop bothering about them turning you down, I believe it will turn positive," Brian said as he lovingly gazed at his wife.

Lyra stared at her husband in disbelief. "Brian, why would you ask me to go there? Do you want me to be humiliated?" She asked, slightly confused by Brian's statement.

"No, just go there with your proposal. I'm sure you'll get their support" Brian said as he made her rest her head on his shoulder, comforting her.

However, Lyra was still not satisfied. "Honey, don't you know Zelyn holdings? This is one of the biggest companies in Ashton Hills controlling more than 60% of the Economy. Several bigger companies than ours are all at their mercy, the Brooks Enterprises is like an ant In Front of them." She said again as she held the hem of her dress nervously. She didn't want to humiliate herself.

"I'm telling you, you'll get their support. Don't you trust me?"

Seeing as her husband was so sure, Lyra was confused. "is there something you're not telling me?"

Brian was slightly stunned by his wife's question, but quickly changed his expression as he wasn't ready to expose his new identity to her.

"I'm sure because you're more than capable of getting any company to make a deal with you. You're not only charming but equally intelligent"

Lyra's cheeks turned red at her husband's words, she decided to trust him and hope for the best.

The lovely moment was however cut short by Lyra's mother. “Brian, how dare you settle in without doing the dishes! do you expect me to do that for you or you don't know your work again you brat?” She yelled at the top of her voice, banging on the door to their room.

Brian startled, immediately stood up to attend to her, Lyra opted she should go do the dishes instead but Brian insisted it was okay. He won't like to get on the bad side of his in-laws.

The next day, Brian decided to call Albert Moore and inform him about his meeting with Zelyn Holdings.

"I'll inform the Director about your arrival, sir and to prepare the handing over" Albert said respectfully.

On reaching the company, Brian was amazed by how huge it was. He found it hard to believe that the company was his now.

"Who's that man?"

"Why does he look so wretched?"

"Who's he looking for?" Workers whispered among themselves as they cast disdainful glances at Brian.

"We need to stop him," the receptionist said suddenly as she walked towards Brian.

"Hey hey stop right there, people like you are not tolerated in the company." She said arrogantly. "Please leave" she added as she ushered him to the door.

Slightly angered but calm, Brian kept his cool and requested the receptionist to direct him to the Director's office.

"The director?" The receptionist asked again, trying to check if she heard wrong.

The Director of Zelyn Holdings is an exceptional man in the business industry. Asking to see him without normal protocols is like telling them he's their boss. With his shabby dressing.

"You can't meet our Director!, I know you're the type that does beg for money but your kind of beggar amazes me because you have a high taste”

"You're not fit to clean his shoe. I'll advise you to just leave politely, and don't come back" the receptionist said, angered and disgusted by Brian's demand. Just who does he think he is?

Brian now devastated as this isn't progressing anywhere, brings out his phone and dials Albert's number. He wanted to put an end to this mess once and for all.

“Who are you trying to scare with a phone call? Who could you even know? I can bet the biggest person on your contacts list isn't qualified to even work in our HR department” the receptionist hit at him

“Hello Albert, I thought you'd already informed the right authority of my arrival, what's this delay and insult I'm getting from a receptionist for about 30 minutes here” Brian said.

Albert was shocked to hear someone was giving Brian Dukes a hard time “ sir ….sir I'm very sorry, I'll get it resolved right away” The call ended

Albert immediately calls Davis; the Director of Zelyn Holdings and informs him of the trouble he'll be in as the New CEO is stuck downstairs getting a cold welcome from his staff.

The call ended and Mr Davis rushed down to the reception, he couldn't stand his dream of retaining his position under the new CEO getting destroyed by a rude receptionist.

"Where's he?" He asked the receptionist immediately when he got to the lobby. However, when he saw Brian, his brows knitted in confusion, "And who are you?"

Delighted that someone reason like her, the receptionist immediately said, "He just barged into our company and asked to see you. I chased him out but he refused to leave sir."

Brian stood up and walked confidently to the Director "Did you get the message from Albert Moore?" He asked as he whispered into the chairman's ears.

Realization dawned on Mr Davis immediately after he said those words. "You are Brian Du….. “

"Can we get down to what I'm here for " Brian cut in, shutting him up immediately as he was about to call his surname; Dukes. Giving him the ‘No’ gesture

Davis was confused. Judging by the way Brian was dressed, he didn't look like he could own a tea shop, let alone the biggest business empire in Aston Hills.

"You're welcome sir, let me lead you to the elevator" he mumbled as he bowed down respectfully, offering his respect.

Everyone was shocked.

How could a man dressed so shabbily make the Director bow?

Turning towards the receptionist, "How dare you talk to him that way!" Is that your way of saying you're tired of your job? Mr Davis bellowed.

The receptionist moved back in fear. She was confused. Why was the chairman shouting at her over this wretched man?

“I'd advise you to start clearing your desk, you ain't fit for this job anymore,” the Director said

"Please, follow me to my office."

"Please, please, I'm sorry. Mr Davis, please" she wept as she fell to Davis's feet.

However, Davis merely glanced at her, "I'm not the one you should beg."

"You should beg him" he added, while pointing towards Brian.

Lost for words, the receptionist held Brian's legs and begged for mercy. Even though she still can't understand what is happening she's eager to save her job

She watched as Brian walked away from her with the Director guiding him.

"Mr Brian, I'm so sorry about what happened earlier" Mr Davis said as soon as they entered his office.

"Oh, it's okay" Brian replied, waving it off like it was some insignificant matter.

Davis brought out some files and placed them on the table. "This is the transfer of ownership file sir. You would have to sign here" he said while pointing at a particular space.

Brian signed the paper and went straight to the reason why he came in the first place. "Concerning the Ashton Hills summit, coming up, Brooks Enterprises will be bringing a collaboration proposal here, I want you to approve it.

Slightly stunned, "I don't think they're qualified enough sir. They've been rejected several times in the past." He stated.

"Well, that's in the past. Just approve them and let them participate in the summit" Brian ordered. "A lady would be coming here tomorrow, just sign the file and tell her they've been approved, don't tell her I came here to talk to you about it" he warned.

"Yes, yes sir. Consider it done" Davis said softly.

“And about my identity, I think Albert must have informed you. It must be hidden, is that understood?”

The Director nodded in agreement, seeing that Brian didn't talk about his position, he's more than happy that he gets to keep his work under new ownership.

“As for that rude receptionist, I don't want you to sack her, I know how hard it is to get a good-paying job. But make her get a notebook and fill it up with the words ‘I will never look down on any customer again’ ten thousand words then she can be considered for the job again” Brian uttered

“Oh, okay sir. You're so considerate sir. I will do as you wish”

After settling the issue, he decided to take his leave. Davis stood up to see him off.

"Why did he respect him this much? He even fired a receptionist for him"

"Maybe he's an important figure"

"I doubt it!" A worker disagreed. "An important figure wouldn't be dressed this way."

"Let's just hope this is the last time such dirtbag is coming here.”

On his way out, Brian heard a familiar voice call out his name harshly. "Brian!? the wretched and shameless live-in son-in-law, what the hell are you doing here?”
