Chapter 2: Failure

Bryce could see that Veronica was even uncomfortable with the situation.

The hand clenched in the air and then stretched out on its own. Bryce also released the collar of the man he was holding. But when he was caught off guard, the man managed to throw a counter punch.

It made Bryce stagger just a few steps in front of his wife. Everyone gasped at the unexpected situation, including Veronica.

Bryce slowly got up while trying to tidy up his clothes, which were already dishevelled and looked dirty from the fight. The security there also responsively separated the two.

"Veronica, do you want a divorce from me?" Bryce replied by giving a pitiful look.

Veronica, who saw Bryce's innocent face, felt hesitant, but she immediately looked away, not to look weak or affected by the situation.

She did not answer his question at all. Instead, she wandered around and looked for someone to take charge of everything.

"Arelyn, I only gave you a simple task, but why did things get messy ?" Veronica said firmly with a cold tone.

"I'm sorry, Miss Carter. I tried my best, but this useless man, I mean your husband, turned a simple situation into a mess," Bryce saw Arelyn respond while pinching herself like she was under great stress.

"Ah, never mind. I was also a bit of a fool for following your and my mother's advice. I was humiliated in my own office," Veronica muttered in a low voice.

Bryce felt confused by everything. He wanted to ask for an explanation, but Veronica’s attitude seemed to be indifferent.

The man immediately grabbed Veronica's hand, which made Arelyn instantly offended.

"Be careful; you'll hurt Miss Carter if you hold her like that."

Hearing that sentence made the crowd immediately sneer at his action. Some people even assumed that Bryce was the type of husband who was demanding and abusive towards a wife.

Veronica realised everyone's gaze was still on her, and Bryce upset her. She immediately shouted sternly, "What are you watching? It is not an opera. Please get back to work!"

That sentence was effective enough to make the people who had been crowding immediately leave. Now, there were only three of them left.

"Veronica, are the contents of this document correct?" Bryce once again asked, this time showing a calmer tone and expression.

She turned her face and looked at Bryce. This woman nodded her head in response.

"Bryce, let's talk about everything in a more private room."

The three of them now entered the common guest room in the office. Bryce sat directly opposite Veronica while Arelyn was between the two.

"Bryce, I don't know how to explain this. But I wish you could understand me. Our marriage has been tested a lot in the last two years. I could feel the distance between us. I'm grateful for all the good you've done for me as my husband, but our relationship can no longer continue. So I would like to ask for your understanding. Let's just end it all. You must be tired of being a son-in-law in the Carter family."

Veronica now took the divorce documents from Arelyn's hands and handed them directly to Bryce.

"We may be getting a divorce, but I won't just leave you. The house that we both live in will be fully yours, and regarding your work matters, don't worry. I will be responsible. You will receive compensation money from me as well as I will arrange for you to get a decent job."

Bryce, who had been hearing about the phrase money and compensation along with the divorce sentence, began to feel sick and nauseous. He felt as if he was a gold-digger who only married for wealth.

"Veronica, I'm sorry, but I can't accept your offer."

Bryce's words took both women by surprise. Arelyn, holding back her irritation, immediately vented her anger because she was worried that Bryce would create another drama that would cancel the divorce decision.

"C'mon, Mr Milano. Don't start another stage act. Miss Carter has kindly asked you for a divorce and will even give you damages and compensation money so that you don't have to sue us later with various ridiculous reasons for extra money."

The emotionally charged Bryce tried to control himself from attacking the woman in front of him who had accused him and degraded him earlier.

"I understand her wishes. That's why I will sign the divorce papers. It's just that I don't want any compensation or any form of mercy from my wife," Bryce muttered firmly. He immediately picked up the pen on the table and signed the document.

"What a stupid man!" Bryce ignored the various sneers and insults that Arlyn threw at him.

After signing the document, Bryce, without saying goodbye, walked out of the room. The echoing click of the pen was the final straw that ended their relationship.

As the door was about to close, Bryce saw Arlyn cheering happily. He also heard something that made the wound hurt even more, as if someone had sown salt there.

"Congratulations on your divorce, Miss Carter. I'm sure you've just made a wonderful decision. You can now marry Mr Jaxon without any hindrance."

Bryce, who had been humiliated, was now beginning to understand where the story was going. The man returned home alone, unlike usual, because he always went home with his wife.

"Ah, shit. I forgot that I ordered a small tart with a bottle of cheap champagne to celebrate Veronica's birthday. Now, the plan has failed miserably. The only gift she asked for was our divorce."

Bryce couldn't take this anymore. He stifled a silent sob in the dim room lights. His eyes were fixed on a necklace that fell beside the bed.

“This is the only thing I have left.” It was the remaining relic Bryce had, his treasure, that Veronica did not seem to take care. He then took the necklace and decided to leave.
