Chapter 3: Humiliation

"Ah, I can handle this shit. I guess it’s time to go."

Bryce left the building in his clothes while carrying the necklace. But there was something he didn't realise. A black car was suddenly seen entering and speeding away.

Bruck!

Bryce staggers and falls backwards. The small incident didn't seriously injure him, but it was enough to dislocate his bones.

Slowly, the car lights faded, as the driver turned off the engine. The car doors opened up automatically, and two people stepped out of there.

"Mum, Mate, what are you here for?" Bryce slowly got up and greeted them as if the incident had not happened.

A fashionably dressed man and woman with an arrogant and cruel gaze and no guilt at all walked over. Bryce recognised the woman as Lexy Rivera, his mother-in-law, while the man was Veronica's brother Levi Riviera.

Slap!

"Stop pretending to be nice to me," sneered Lexy with a disgusted look.

"Mum, why did you slap me?" asked Bryce in confusion.

Instead of getting an answer, Lexy threw out her hand and gave another slap.

"Are you pretending to be stupid?" the woman scolded.

"I don't know what you're talking about, Mum," Bryce responded, then tried to shield his face as Lexy was seen raising her hand.

"Huh, you are a disgusting man. My hands aren't even willing to throw one more slap. Don't call me 'Mum' because I'm not your mum," Lexy said angrily.

"A rubbish man like you should have been removed a long time ago. You got us into trouble with your actions earlier in Veronica's office," said Levi, who had been silent.

The man immediately took out his phone and showed a video.

"You'll die if this footage gets leaked out," Levi continued with a clenched fist that made Bryce step back.

Lexy added, "My son, don't get your hands dirty by touching that rubbish son-in-law. We have to play it gracefully, like how we got the tape and got rid of an employee who would destroy Veronica's reputation."

Bryce did not understand why his mother-in-law was so cruel to him. As a husband, Bryce had given everything he had to help Veronica, but his every struggle was meaningless in the eyes of the Carter family.

Lexy was the most opposed to the marriage between Bryce and Veronica. She felt that her daughter should not be with a man with an unclear background, even if, looking at her family status, the two were impossible to be together.

Bryce knew that ever since he married Veronica, his mother-in-law would always try to find fault with him and bring up the divorce every chance she got. Lexy never seemed satisfied with what Bryce was doing.

"If I knew it would end like this, I should have kicked you out of the Carter family property. Bryce, you're just a nuisance to us all. I don't understand how Veronica could choose and keep you as a husband all these years," Lexy said disgustingly.

"Mum, you're right. This rubbish is a disgrace to us," Levi said to support his mum.

"You guys are completely out of line. If you want to talk about disgrace, I think we all know about Veronica's brother's reality," Bryce responded, not accepting the insult.

Smash!

Levi, whose blood was boiling, threw a punch at Bryce. The man's lips appeared to be dripping blood as a result of being hit.

Some visitors who had seen the action could only shake their heads. Some neighbours know how bad a family's fate is when they have a useless son-in-law. None of the people there sympathised with Bryce's condition; they all agreed more with what the Carter family was doing.

"This has gone too far," Bryce protested.

"I've tried my best to be a responsible husband. Have you forgotten I'm the reason behind Veronica's success?" he continued.

"Don't speak lies. Veronica is successful because of her efforts. You should realise that you never belonged together. I'm glad my persuasion finally worked, and Veronica was willing to divorce you even though she didn't seem to agree," Lexy said proudly.

"Mum, why are you so cruel? I've given..." Just as Bryce was about to reply, his sentence was cut short by her. "Don't try to name one good deed you've done before me. Instead of continuing to remember that which is your responsibility, you should think about what you haven't given as a husband."

Bryce began to understand things more clearly. He knew that his mother-in-law was a materialist, but he had never thought that Lexy was completely obsessed.

"Since you are now divorced, I hope you will realise that you must leave my daughter's property," Veronica said.

One thing that she missed was that Bryce was already the legal owner of the building. Veronica had titled the property in his name, but since Bryce had no intention of taking the place, he did not say anything.

"Mum, you can't let this rubbish man get away that easily," Levi said as he tried to intercept Bryce's steps, who wanted to leave. Levi noticed Bryce's hand, which kept going into his pocket.

"Everything that Bryce is wearing must have been a gift from Veronica. I think that this man should not take anything from inside."

Lexy seemed to agree with his son's words. "Then strip him out of something that didn't belong to him."

Bryce, already fed up with the two people before him, decided to leave immediately and not waste any more time.

"Stop it. You guys don't need to be this low to me. I'm not a thief. So I'm not carrying anything that doesn't belong to me."

The two did not accept the presumptuous attitude shown by Bryce, but just as they were about to speak, the sound of a ringtone was heard from his pocket. The man then ignored Levi and Lexy.

“A private call? Who is this?” A call with an unknown number was much more interesting to his attention.
