The Ultimatum

Victor stood in the middle of the study, fists clenched, staring at the letter on his desk as if it might catch fire under his glare. The words burned in his mind, each sentence another weight pressing down on his chest.

“Leave Emma, or face financial ruin.”

It was Grandpa Ben’s ultimatum, delivered cold and ruthless, just like the man himself. Victor had known this day would come, but he hadn’t expected the knife to be twisted so deep.

Emma entered the room quietly, her eyes falling immediately on Victor’s tense posture. The atmosphere was thick with tension, almost suffocating. She could feel it like a storm brewing between them.

“Victor,” she started softly, but he didn’t turn around. His silence was deafening.

She stepped closer, her heart heavy. “What did he say?”

Victor finally moved, his hand sliding the letter off the desk. He tossed it toward her with a bitterness that surprised even him. “Read it.”
