Chapter 16

The waiter followed behind Maxwell and saw that he didn't go and sit down on a table. Instead, he walked up to another waiter and muttered a question in his ears.

“Where's the Manager's office?" 

The man pointed to a particular direction and Maxwell followed the path that led him to the Manager's office.

He was about to knock on the door but changed his mind.

Maxwell went back to the restaurant hall and sat on one of the tables. He ordered some food for himself.

The demeaning waiter, who had seen that he was in trouble, decided to treat Maxwell better.

It was a way of atoning for his sins with the hope that Maxwell would forgive him and not get him into trouble by reporting him to the manager. 

It was not the arrogant and demeaning waiter who took Maxwell's order. However, he decided to bring the meals for him.

When his food arrived, Maxwell didn't mind who served him or even looked at the waiter's face. He just went ahead and began to devour the food.

From where he sat, he could feel Valerie's eyes on his body. He knew that his ex-wife and her friends were watching him but he never cared.

Maxwell ate with gusto and not long after, he was done with his meals and paid for it.

After that, he stood up from his chair, glanced at Valerie's table with a fake smile on his face.

After briefly staring at the three young ladies, Maxwell turned around and started towards the Manager's office. 

“Sir, please listen to me." The arrogant waiter called out to him before he could knock on the door.

Stopping in his tracks, Maxwell turned to the young man with raised brows. “Yes. How can I help you?" 

The waiter sighed inwardly and closed in on him before uttering.

"Sir, I apologize for what happened earlier. Please forgive me for how I treated you. Believe me, it was just a misunderstanding and I never intended to disrespect you.”

"Please don't report me to the Manager. I don't want to lose my job.”

Maxwell stared intently at him for a while. 

With a smile on his face, he reached out and patted him on the shoulder. " Don't worry about what happened earlier. I'd make sure that it doesn't happen again.”

Just then, the door was flung open, revealing a tall young man in his late thirties.

He was actually going to make sure that customers were properly attended to.

He also takes note of the customers complaints and works on improvement.

The man glanced at Maxwell and then turned to the waiter. “What's going on here?" He inquired but didn't get an immediate response.

After a moment of silence, Maxwell said to him with a smile. “Are you the Manager? If you are, then I'd like to file a complaint to you, if you don't mind." 

“And you should know that it's a serious matter and I'd like to discuss it in your office." 

The manager looked at Maxwell before nodding his head a few times. “Alright then, come with me." 

He opened the door to go inside but stopped and turned to the waiter.

"What are you still doing here? Now go back to work immediately.”

Without a word, the waiter turned around and began to walk away, his heart pounding chaotically. He believed that Maxwell was there to get him fired because of his rude behavior.

The manager who introduced Mr. Parker led Maxwell into his office and offered him a seat.

“What can I offer you, Sir?" 

“Just call me, Maxwell. And I don't need anything because I'm already full." Maxwell patted his belly and the man nodded at him.

“Very well then, what can I do for you, Mr. Maxwell?" 

Maxwell sighed deeply before he began.

“You see, Mr Parker. I've been insulted and humiliated by one of your employees." 

“The last time I came here, he called me a begger and threw insults at me. Just because I liked the food here, I decided to come back, putting aside the demeaning words and unwelcome attitude I received." 

“Unfortunately, I got more insults again today from the same employee and I'd like you to dispose of him immediately.” 

With furrowed brows, the manager gave Maxwell a serious look before asking.

“How can I be so sure that you're telling the truth? You know that I can't just fire an employee without proof of what the person did wrong." 

"Proof.” Maxwell muttered while smiling to himself.

"Yes, I need proof that he actually disrespected you before I can act on your complaint.” Mr. Parker nodded at Maxwell and kept a serious expression.

He didn't see the need why he should just fire an employee because one customer came to lay a complaint.

Aside from Maxwell, no one else has reported any of the employees to him. So why was it just Maxwell?

“Hmph." Maxwell chuckled and shook his head a few times.

He turned around and scrutinized the office before turning back to face Mr. Parker.

“The security guard outside witnessed today's incident so you can ask him.” Maxwell said to him but the man remained unfazed.

After a moment of silence, he replied to Maxwell. “Look, Mr. Maxwell. I know that the customers are always right. However, I can't just fire an employee because one customer does not like him. And it's pointless to ask the security guard because he might not tell the truth.”

“Ok." Maxwell stood up from his chair. He put his hands in his trousers pockets and brought out some money which he placed on the table.

“This is a total of twenty thousand dollars. Take the money and fire that arrogant waiter or I'll make sure that you lose your own job." 

As soon as Maxwell said those words, he turned around and was about to walk out of the office but was called back. "Sir, I'll do exactly as you've instructed.”

Without wasting any time, he took the money, counted it and asked Maxwell. "Tell me who disrespected you and the person will find himself with no job this instant.”
