Davide knew it would come to that. He was well aware of the fact that that suggestion was going to be put forward. He knew when he came to the hospital that the person he was going to meet would be an acquaintance. He knew that the doctor was going to recognize him and they might manipulate him into giving blood to Beatrice even though the woman did not deserve it.

Davide thought again. If he didn't give her the blood, her death was a certainty. She would die and he would have it on his conscience, but a part of him knew that if he did give her this blood, the ties he had with Avery might never be severed. He recalled all the bullshit he had put up with, all the insults, the downgrading, the embarrassment that Beatrice had put him through.
