"Papa?"

This single word hung up in the air and was the only thing that echoed in Evan's ears.

"W-What did you just call me?" Evan's eyes blinked rapidly and he stared flabbergastedly at the 8 or 9-year-old child before him. Her round sea-green pupils bore at him with nothing but Innocence in them.

As though terrified by his reply, the girl's shoulders slumped down as she hung the blanket to her chest, and stared at him with tears slowly weiling up in her eyes.

"Why?" She mumbled as she gazed hard at Evan. "Do you hate me?"

Evan stood there in shock at how innocent and yet heavy her words were.

'Did she get hurt from the beating? or is she pretending to know me when she doesn't?' Evan frowned as he thought more about her strange behavior.

"Why are you silent, papa?" Her soft calm voice sounded in his ears, prompting him to stop thinking and glance at her way.
