Chapter 8

Mason jolted awake, sitting up from the bed he now found himself. He looked around and discovered that he was in a hospital.

His mind immediately flashed back to the searing pain he felt in his arm before he passed out and he hurriedly looked at his right arm.

He saw a crest, almost like a tattoo just on his wrist before his palm, where doctors check for pulse. The crest had the insignia of a wolf's head.

He was clearly surprised to see it there and was more surprised that it does not hurt anymore.

A nurse walked in with a tray And Smiled at him "you're finally awake " she said.

"yeah " he smiled back calmly.

"how Long was I out? " he asked.

" you were out for 6days, we got worried after the first day, since drunks don't normally stay out that long " she replied him.

"six days? " he gasped in surprise

He remembered what he was told before he passed out and he immediately got on his feet

"shit shit, it's been so long already. Check your pocket, check your pocket "

Just like the man had said, when he checked his pocket he saw a piece of paper the and it had an address scribbled on it.

The read the address and then bolted outside the room and outside the hospital. The nurse tried to stop him, but she couldn't. .

He followed the address to a run down house and this time he was weary of going inside so that what happened last time won't happened again.

He summoned courage and then went inside the house. Inside was dark but he managed to get around.

There was no-one in the house all he could find was a box with the same insignia he had on his hand, crested on it, the wolf insignia.

"this should be for me " he said and then took the box and left the house.

"is this box supposed to hold the answers that I need? "Mason said to himself as he walked with the box , looking for a good place to check it's content.

He found a bench by the side of a park and decided to sit there and check its contents.

Sitting down on the bench with the box beside him, he opened the box and to his surprise there wasn't much inside it.

He took out a book like journal with a leather back from it, it was looking really old. He tucked the book in his back pockets for safe keeping.

Mason reached into the box again and took out a cubical box, just same size as a rubix cube. It was black and had weird symbols all over it, he couldnt make heads or tail of it so he just left it on the bench.

He looked into the box and saw three more items, a key, a jar containing a viscous black liquid And a little black pill that looked like medicine..

"that's it? " he asked in disappointment, he took out everything from the box and shook the box but there was nothing else inside.

"tch!" he exclaimed before getting up

"it's getting late, I should get going "

He said as he put the key and pill in his pocket since they were smaller.

It was getting late so he figured he should be going back home, he doesn't even know if he was still close to home since he was in a completely different place.

He was left with just the cube and the jar which he will carry in his hands home. He took them and was about leaving.

Someone roughly bumped into him causing him to lose balance and fall. The jar and cube fell from his hand as well.

"hey watch where you are going!" he yelled out bitterly since the person caused him to fall down, he looked ahead and saw that the person who bumped onto him was already running and it annoyed him even more.

He looked at the ground and saw that the jar had broken and the viscous liquid inside had evaporated.

"no! I don't even know what that was " he lamented.

"wait, where's the cube? "

He looked around in search of it and then he realized the person who bumped into him had stolen it.

"bastard!"

He yelled and immediately sprinted off after the person.

the person had ran into the park and straight into the woods and he followed right after the person.

BACK TO PRESENT

So there he was in his present situation after recounting what had led to it.

"relax and breath Mason , you have trained for this, relax and breath. Focus on your ears, if your eyes fail, your ears will never fail."

Mason said to himself as he recalled instructions he had recieved years ago when he was training.

He calmed himself and took long steady breaths as he focused more with his ears, he closed his eyes to increase his concentration.

And he began listening, he could hear the woods, the leaves of the trees swaying, the wind howling, the insects chirping and then a heartbeat and laboured breathing.

'A heartbeat!' his attention snapped immediately as he focused more on it to ascertain its location.

'there ' he thought to himself as he found the location of the thief trying to hide.

He sprinted off in the direction of the person and immediately through a punch without thinking.

"found you! "

The punch hit the tree missing the face of the target who had dodged it after realizing that his location had been compromised.

The thief continued to run but skidded to a stop when he discovered a cliff just ahead and no place to continue running to.

So he turned and brought out a dagger intent on making a last stand at that spot.

Mason stopped as well just about three metres away from the thief. He saw the cube in one of the thief's hand and the dagger in the other.

"look man, no need for this. I just want my stuff back. It belongs to me."

Mason said as he took a defensive stance.

"Don't come at closer or I will maim you right here and hide your corpse and no-one will ever find you "

The thief said, pointing the dagger in a threatening manner at Mason .

Mason didn't listen but was determined to recover the cube because he believed it held something important about his life.

"just hand it over "

He said and reached for the cube.

The thief intercepted by swinging the dagger to cut Mason’s hand defensively, but Mason reacted on time and jumped back to avoid getting cut.

"I'm warning you, don't come any closer ". The thief said.

"it's mine, hand it over jerk or.."

"or what? " the thief shot back.

"or I'll, I'll..."Mason tried to make up threats

The thief's eyes widen immediately and he grunted on pain before reaching for his neck to feel a pin that was stuck there.

"ughhhhh help me..."

The thief said Just before he slumped down and stopped moving.

The cube fell from his hand stood between him and Mason

It took Mason a few seconds to process what just happened and he ran to check the thief

"what's happening?"

He checked his pulse and heartbeat and confirmed that the man was dead and he was surprised and immediately went on guard.

Mason saw the pin on the dead man's neck and knew he had been poisoned, but from where?

Mason stood up and looked around as he stood on guard, hoping to find the assailant.

It was dark so it was hard to see and it made Mason the more afraid since he did not know what to expect, he could easily be killed on the spot like the man on the floor.

The trees ruffled and two figures proceeded out of the dark, both clad in all black attire. Only thier bright red eyes could be seen, the rest part was covered.

"now hand over the cube and step back and we may just not kill you like your friend over there"

One of the individuals said with a hoarse emotionless voice.

"who are you? "

Mason who was afraid managed to ask as he stepped back slowly , he looked at the cube on the floor, that had fallen from the dead man's hand and thought of what to do.

"hand it over,we will not ask again. It will be easier to take it from your corpse " the second person said.

"hand what over? "

Taizai asked, still moving back.

"The cube"

One of them said.

"enough! Let's just kill him"

The second said and reached for a pin in his pouch.

Mason seeing this, raised his hand in defense

"no wait wait wait" he pleaded

Mason felt the pin enter his neck and his eyes widened In horror and pain and he immediately slumped to the ground.

The men walked over to him, took the cube and then left.
