Chapter 37: I'll save you.

Keet didn’t pay him any mind, he was focused on examining the anomaly in front of him, and Birdy wasn’t important to him at all.

Living for almost three hundred years made him lose any attachment to human lives that didn’t have any significant to him. Keet wasn’t a cold artificial intelligence, but he wasn’t a human either, he was something in between.

Birdy gathered what little courage and determination he had, and approached Adam with the intention of saving him from this unsightly torture, or at least lessen his sentence and share his pain.

Sadly, he had too little courage, his knees buckled as he stepped on the vibrating platform and saw Adam’s face up close, several veins were visible on his tensed up neck, and blood red forehead, he was gritting his teeth in pain, sweat dripping from everywhere on him.

“Boy! If you go near him you could get crushed by the gravitational field.” Keet calmly warned, not bothering to look at Birdy, he just didn’t want his death to interrupt the experiment.

Not understanding what gravitational field is, Birdy certainly understood that there was danger, which meant that Adam was in danger. Tears ran down his cheeks, he abandoned all thoughts about fear and self preservation, and as if something was turned off in his brain, he ran towards Adam, against the gravity storm that was pushing him back, shouting In determination. “I’ll save you Adam!”

Adam’s focus was interrupted by the heroic childish shouting, he turned his gaze towards it, and Birdy was approaching him slowly with an expression that Adam never saw before on any one, Birdy’s eyes were cold and determined, holding a tinge of predatory fearlessness, Adam barely recognized him.

“What are you doing?!” Adam asked in his usual cold emotionless tone, he never expected Birdy to have this kind of look in his eyes, the thought of fearing him didn’t cross his mind, Birdy was weak and harmless after all, but Adam was confused by his looks and actions.

“I’m saving you!” Birdy replied without a shred of hesitation, he was already determined to pay any price to save his friend, his brother, the one who accepted him no matter his flaws, and gave him what he didn’t deserve, and even offered him a way out of that horrible place.

“From what?!” the confusion only grew in Adam’s mind, his skill was disabled when his focus fully turned towards Birdy’s peculiar state, his hands and legs still held by the cables.

“From… this awful punishment!” seeing the pain on Adam’s face being replaced with utter confusion, and the platform stopping the violent shaking, Birdy hesitated a little.

“Are you okay?! Did that VR program miss with your mind?! Keet?” Adam turned to Keet for answers, he seemed to be watching in amusement, a slightly visible grin on his face.

“Let the boy save you Adam!” His grin grew wider.

Adam gave him an awkward look, and detached himself from the cables with a thought under the shocked gaze of Birdy. “I wasn’t being punished Birdy! I’m training!”

“What kind of training was that?! It looked very painful! I thought you were in trouble because you brought me along!”

Adam realized what Birdy must have thought when he saw him in that state, he forgets sometimes that a normal child doesn’t do what he does, and doesn’t endure as much pain as he does.

Adam didn’t know what a normal child’s life is like until he went to the orphanage, seeing their boring life he thought that they were the odd ones, his daily routine always included some training, either alone against the robots created by the house core, or with his father which was mostly painful and stressful trying to escape and survive the scenarios prepared for him.

“Lets have some food! I’ll explain a few things that you need to know, since you will accompany me on this journey.”

With a thought, Adam ordered Keet to prepare a late dinner, during which, Adam told Birdy what he would expect to see Adam doing, he didn’t tell him the whole story, just what he needed to know, like What he have told Keet.

“That’s awesome! Can I get super powers too?!” Birdy’s expression was full of anticipation, Adam was originally planning to buy him a robotic core to use for necessary stuff, doing it earlier will not harm any one.

“Why not! Keet! Can you please search for a source to buy untraceable goods! I need to buy a strong robotic core and around 30kg of top grade cluster fabric”

“There is more than that on the island kid! Your father’s entire arsenal is there.”

Adam’s face brightened a little before his expression turning dark again. “What are the odds that we find him there!”

“zero! I already told you where he is didn’t I?”

Adam felt sad, thinking about the last time his father left made him gloomy, he felt so lonely without him that it was sometimes unbearable, Mela couldn’t keep him company all the time, and he had to eventually return home and have nothing but The silent walls, and the programed machines to keep him company, until the department came.

“Did you like the virtual reality Birdy?!” Adam felt that his gloomy mood was effecting Birdy’s appetite, so he changed the subject turning to Birdy, who was stuffing his mouth with barbecued meat.

“You kidding me! I love it! Why didn’t they bring us some of that in the… any way lets play together there is this very awesome game called Grandmenia, where you can create an avatar and start adventuring in a world of monsters and awesome powers and stuff.”

“Lets try it together then! I didn’t play that one before.” Adam wasn’t excited at all with the game, but playing it with Birdy should be interesting to him, he played countless games in the virtual reality before and found them all boring, just for the fact that they were just that, games.
