Shizu, using her metal umbrella, swung in a full horizontal attack that made the surrounding wind audibly swish. In the next moment, it struck 3 gengiri and they were blown back.
Parts of their insect carapaces broke off and they then laid motionless on the ground with purple blood leaking out of the newly revealed purple flesh of their bodies. Shizu then turned her head in the direction where Kajima and Azi were battling with their own foes.
Kajima faced two gengiri, one directly in front and another on his right flank. Kajima struck out with the tip of his halberd as he skewered the gengiri in front through its maw. The tip traveled until it was out the back of its head with a gush of purple blood.
He then pulled the tip of his halberd out deftly and spun to swing his weapon horizontally with the axe of the halberd. On one full revolution of his body he decapitated the gengiri on his right and continued his motion. Following through he split the previously skewered gengiri across its midsection.
More purple blood poured onto the white snowy ground.
Moving to the left to support Azi, Kajima stood to the side to aid him if he was in danger. He would let Azi have this fight to himself to better understand how to defend himself. So, like a hawk, Kajima watched over him.
Azi, who was facing off one gengiri, was on the defense as he was still unfamiliar with combat, but he held his ground as he gripped his shield tightly. With each strike from the gengiri, he could feel the impact travel up his left arm and slightly rattle his mind.
His stance was awkward as the snowy ground made it difficult for him to move the way he wanted. The snow covered his leather boots up to his ankles and the cold seeped into his body to take some of his body heat away.
His left hand was starting to become numb as well from the cold and the gengiri's strikes. He could not properly brace his shield and his inexperience would soon show its effects.
When the gengiri moved to strike, his left arm could not reposition his shield in time. Lunging, it bit into the leather armor and in response to this, Azi pushed the gengiri away with his shield and jumped back to get some distance when he was able to separate it from his shoulder.
His left shoulder was grazed by the gengiri's lunging attack with its sharp jaw, luckily the leather armor was tough and prevented a deep gash from forming. The armor now had a noticeable cut that went into the leather revealing a bit of his skin, and a few drops of Azi's blood now stained the brown shoulder armor.
The gengiri landed a couple paces away from him and lunged back a few more in reaction to Azi's sudden movement and from Kajima's glare. It did not perform a follow up lunge and instead took its own stance with its gaze on Azi. It was scared but knew the boy in front of it was weak and could be easy prey to kill and eat.
Hearing the ominous clacking of the gengiri's jaw made Azi shiver a bit but composing himself and digging up a bit of bravery he decided that he should try for a killing blow rather than be on the defensive to tire out the gengiri.
He was not confident in his strength so he initially felt that he needed to prolong the battle to ensure he would be able to slowly damage the gengiri, but he now decided to end the fight before his left arm became too numb which would leave him vulnerable to the gengiri's attacks.
Holding his shield up to cover the majority of his left side he then took a somewhat crouched stance with his left foot in front. He then positioned the short sword he held in his right hand pointing forward at the gengiri. He put power into his legs and rushed forward in a low crouch.
The gengiri struck out to attack Azi's exposed right side but was instead met with the flat of Azi's shield, who had moved the shield under the gengiri. Pushing his shield up he stabbed his short sword twice into the underbelly of the monster.
One jab cutting deep into the fleshy body of the gengiri and the other stab landed in the exact same spot as it pierced a deeper hole into the monster's belly. Purple blood stained his short sword and began to flow onto the snowy ground.
Azi quickly pulled his sword out and performed a backstep to observe if the gengiri was still alive. He was relieved to see that the gengiri slumped to the ground with purple blood pouring from its body. Calming his senses down he took stock of his surroundings and then himself, which made him realize that he had a tingling sensation in his arms.
During the exchange, Azi could feel his arms slightly tingle after every strike he made, and he believed that it was due to his excitement and fear. Remembering the fear and excitement Azi became inattentive as the feeling of fear made him remember his time in the black void.
Azi was drawn away from his thoughts by Shizu who was shaking his shoulder and calling to him.
"You ok?"
Pausing for a moment, Azi nodded that he was ok. Shizu turned to Kajima and reported.
"No other enemies nearby on my side, how about you Kajima?
"It is clear over here as well. Azi! You okay?" Asked Kajima.
"I'm alright, just a small graze on my left shoulder. Hand me the bottle of alcohol and a bandage. I'll fix myself up." Said Azi as he patted the snow off of his clothes.
The forest of Shisayama was a dangerous place as not only were there monsters and predatory animals. There was also an assortment of poisonous plants that could easily make you sick if its pollen got into a wound. This was what Azi was taught by Kajima as his first lesson in forest survival.
After bearing the slight pain when applying the alcohol to the graze he had on his shoulder, he then began to wrap it with a bandage. Shizu helped him through the steps of properly securing the bandage so that it did not fall off while in combat or while moving.
"Thanks for your help Shizu. So, what's the plan? Should we head back?" Asked Azi.
"Yes, we have already reached the boundary of our search area as we already made it to the clearing just before the path that goes up the mountain. I don't think we should head back though. With our pace we would still be in the forest during the dead of night.
The forest is more dangerous to travel through at night due to how we lack the ability to see through the darkness. We will set up camp here for now."
After Shizu finished explaining, she looked to Kajima and motioned for him to begin unloading the camping gear he was carrying. Azi helped Kajima set up two tents, one for him and Kajima, and the other for Shizu. They were small but would get the job done as a temporary shelter.
Not wanting to hinder Kajima and Azi, Shizu looked around and told the pair. "I will take a look around to ensure that the surroundings are clear."
After a nod from Kajima and Azi, Shizu left the two to set up the rest of camp. During this time Azi learned how to light a fire, how to find the right tinder, and how to create a fire starter with a stick and some bark. What interested Azi was Kajima's lesson on medicinal herbs and edible plants.
Pointing to a nearby plant, Kajima explained.
"This plant with the heart shaped leaves are known as Alole and the insides of the plant's stem is edible, but it is better used as a skin ointment that helps with sunburns and dry skin. You can use it as food in emergencies or help keep the skin on your feet from getting too dry and from developing calluses.
This yellow flower here is called benweed and its non lethal poison causes intense pain to humans if exposed to wounds, but if you mixed it with water and then boil the mixture down you can create a poison that dulls the senses. It can also be used if mixed with a lot of water as a way to get rid of stomach parasites since most common parasites have no resistance to benweed."
With focused and attentive eyes, Azi was hanging off of Kajima's every word as he had a giddy expression on his face due to his fascination with the knowledge Kajima shared with him. Azi's lesson came to an abrupt end as a loud crashing sound could be heard coming from the direction of where Shizu had walked away.
It had only been an hour since she left so she could not have gone far, but Azi thought to himself.
'Just what in the heck is she doing now?'

Shizu's Point of View (POV)
Shizu was making her way through the forest near the encampment Kajima and Azi were setting up when she noticed a strange outcropping of stones that had a few destroyed trees atop them.
Each tree was massive and was broken as if it was ripped in half across its length. As she thought about what could have moved and destroyed these trees, she made her way to get a closer look at the spectacle.
She suddenly stopped her movement as she began to hear a slight rustling from the rock outcropping. The rocks were covered in snow as their surfaces were caked in a white color. Taking a few moments to look around, Shizu concluded that the rustling was just her imagination.
Not seeing anything out of the ordinary, she turned away to return to camp, but before she took a single step, she heard the previously rustling noise and this time it was much louder.
She looked back and was horrified by what she saw. The rock outcropping was moving as it seemingly rose up revealing an insect like maw and its thick and fleshy legs as it got to its feet and charged at Shizu.
A long white blur dashed at Shizu and she reacted, guarding herself with her metal umbrella she successfully avoided getting directly struck to her body. But she was blown back and was pushed into a nearby boulder which sounded with a hard impact that rang out for all to hear.
She quickly got to her feet and began engaging in a defensive battle with the newly revealed foe. Taken off guard Shizu could not retaliate as the enemy continued its assault with its claws and maw. It was a Kengiri which are similar to the gengiri but were much larger as they stood at a height of 3 meters and a length of 3 meters.
It had a white carapace that blended with the snowy surroundings, but what was much more menacing than its size was the two lobsters like claws it had. The Kengiri's that make Shisayama there home would rarely make a nest in the forest and instead stayed high in the mountains in caves, so Shizu was caught off guard by its appearance here in the forest.
After clashing with the Kengiri for a while, Shizu could hear Kajima's voice behind her yelling out to her. "Get back, quickly!!"
Azi and Kajima had rushed over to see what was happening, a top Kajima's back was Azi as he could not keep up with Kajima when he went at a full sprint.
Shizu jumped back but was not quick enough as she was again blown back by the Kengiri's claw arm strike that impacted her umbrella.
"Shizu. Damnit. Kajima, Toss me to her." Declared Azi.
In response to this Kajima nodded in agreement as the situation was dire and by grabbing the scruff of Azi's shirt, he threw him to where Shizu was lying. Kajima then charged forward to meet the foe as a distraction.
In Azi's mind he thought to himself.
'Okay, so how do I land this?'
Kajima charged at the Kengiri and intended to stab one of its long, thick centipede-like legs. Still flying through the air, Azi braced himself as he saw that he was heading towards Shizu. Wanting to lessen the impact he had on her, Azi tried to think of what he could do but thought of no ideas. Azi then felt a soft impact, Shizu was luckily still conscious and had caught Azi with her two arms outstretched. Azi was relieved to see that she was still conscious but saw she had a bruise on her right shoulder. Shizu grunted in pain as the aftereffects of catching him had made her bruise feel inflamed. At that moment, Azi made a snap decision as he took out a red tube from a pouch on his hip. He aimed it up and pulled the cord. A red magic flare went flying up into the sky which was enough to signal the other western forest parties to converge on their location. Now, he, Shizu, and Kajima just needed to buy time. Hearing some rustling in the nearby bushes, Shizu released Azi from her gr
As Kajima heavily slashed with his halberd, he kept the attention of the kengiri away from anyone else. This allowed Shizu the chance to tend to Azi and she was able to stop the bleeding from his arms by bandaging them up the best she could. But he was not out of the woods yet as she was concerned about his insides as she knew that he likely suffered from internal damage from taking such a heavy strike. Shizu had no way to heal Azi as she knew no healing magic or had packed any potions. Time was running out and it was disconcerting that Azi was also not waking up or even responding to the pain. He just laid there in her arms like a lifeless corpse. She shook him, hoping to get some kind of a response. "Azi! Wake up, Wakeup, WAKE UP!" Tears began to form in her eyes, but before sadness could overtake her a familiar voice called out. "APOTHECARY AND THAUMATURGE STABILIZE THE WOUNDED! ARCHERS AIM FOR THE LEG! SPEARMEN AIM FOR ITS LOWER BODY! ON MY MARK! " Coming from the nearby tr
Feeling the strike of the kengiri pass through his body, Azi felt his insides churning and a stinging pain in his arms as they began to bleed his red blood onto the ground. A sudden, but light, impact was felt on the backside of his head and soon darkness overcame his vision as he swore he heard a voice call to him. In this moment, memories of his hellish experience in that black void filled his mind as the darkness had surrounded him again. He braced for the pain and soon enough it came in waves. Again, Azi felt nightmarish pain and he screamed and cursed at the situation he was in. He then remembered how he had once dulled the pain, so he tried to control his senses. While his attempt to focus his senses only caused him to experience more pain, he endured and strained himself to focus. Feeling as if his mind was splitting in two, he continued to try to maintain his sanity. He couldn’t let his mind break, if it did then he would not be able to return.“Return? Return where? SHIT
Feeling a soft sensation writhing in her arms, Shizu awoke from her sleep as her eyes began to open. Looking around, she could tell that she was in her tent but she was startled by the sight of Azi's drooling face nestled into her chest. While she would usually pulverize any man that would try to be so intimate with her, she remembered that she took up Azi's offer to hug him to sleep. Looking closer at him, she felt like his face seemed a bit cute as his smiling face seemed so at ease and at peace. Deciding to indulge in Azi's antics, she began petting Azi's head and ran her fingers through his disheveled black hair. ‘His hair is so soft and he feels so warm. Maybe I should keep him as a pet in my personal guard. I’m sure the girl would love to pet him as well’ Letting that joking thought stew, her mind clicked and an idea came to mind. She knew of her father’s recent activities of recruiting or hiring vagabonds and orphans to bolster the nation’s workforce with new blood. She al
After sending her soldiers to rest in the village barracks, Shizu made her way to the village chief's house and began to look for her father. After being told by a servant of the house that Ozen was in the study, she rushed over to see him. While Yashimu was supposed to be in charge of giving the final report, Shizu wanted to give the report so she could make a request of her father. Opening the door to the study, Shizu saw that her father was sitting at a table as he was going through and reading reports. Her mind went back to remembering Azi's comment about kings sitting on their thrones as other people did the work in the field. She didn't want to admit it at the time, but Azi was right. During Ozen's initial appointment as King of Kujyuri, he was an outgoing man who fought wild monsters to reclaim land for their nation in the years before his next appointment as a Great General. With his accomplishments he was given the alias of Land Reclaimer by the people. Ozen was also loved
After Shizu concluded her discussion with her father, she began packing her bags as she was going to move into Kajima’s house to monitor Azi. While packing, she thought of a training schedule for Azi, but realized something important. ‘How am I going to convince him?’ Initially, she proudly thought that Azi would take her up on her offer to be her apprentice, but remembered that her standing with him was not even close to the level of friends. As she began to realize that she might have not thought this through she shook her head to dispel the negative thoughts. ‘No, even if he doesn't accept. I can test him with my trials. Wait!’ After tightening the string on her bag, she made another realization. She remembered Ozen saying that she had to win Azi’s heart and thought back to the times she courted a man. But all she got was a blank which left her somewhat flustered. She had no experience when it came to charming men or even getting intimate with a person of the opposite sex. Be
-1 Hour Later- Sitting at the dining table of Kajima's dining room. Two contrasting figures could be seen waiting for Kajima to arrive with breakfast. On one side was a young man whose head was laid in his arms while on the table, his eyes looked as if he just had his soul repeatedly ripped from him and then forcibly shoved back into himself. His face was also red and he felt an odd glee in his heart which made him slightly blush. On the other side was a young woman who was laughing hysterically at the sight of the young man's state. The young man was Azi and after being both “rewarded” and punished by the young woman, better known as Shizu. He felt that he should try to stay away from her, or else he might lose his life or common modesty in the future. When Kajima approached, Azi lifted his head from the table and saw that he had set out a spread of food with the accompanying tableware. "Glad to see you are still alive Azi. How was it?" Recollecting from Kajima’s question, A
Kajima was surprised by Shizu's declaration of suggesting Azi into becoming her potential fiancé. The last 4 who Shizu gave a chance had failed to even pass her standards, let alone her first trial. When the 4 attempted to show how "worthy" they were, each of the 4 men pestered Shizu until she allowed them to take the first trial even though she told them that they were not ready. But their persistence was truly admirable but was short lived. The 4 potential candidates were able to get Shizu to begrudgingly allow them to attempt the first trial. Originally, Shizu would keep the details of the trials a secret, but wanted to get it over with quickly so she revealed what the first trial was. Hearing that they only needed to survive a strike from her and to then land a flow up strike, each fiance believed they could succeed as they were experienced fighters. But things didn't turn out well. The 1st candidate had his arm broken by Shizu's first umbrella strike and he surrendered after no
On the 7th day of the journey, the caravan finally arrived at the gates of the Kujyuri. The welcome was quite extravagant since word had reached the capital that Rulu would be returning early. Even though she had only left the capital for a few weeks, she was very much missed by her people as the usual sight of Rulu helping the commoner had become a daily occurrence for them. This was also a special time as all of Ozen’s children would be returning. While not making any noteworthy actions during the ambush from the Uzuruans, Ozen’s 4 youngest sons had accompanied the caravan and were delegated to grunt work by Shizu to aid in the guarding of the second carriage under Touma’s command. The 4 brothers sighed in relief when they rode past the gate on their personal hororon mounts. They heard the cheers of the citizens grow loud at the front of the caravan since the people began to catch sight of Rulu, who sat on the front seat of the front carriage with Yashimu.Rulu blushed a bit, as th
Finished with situating the captured assailants, the caravan returned to its journey to the capital Kujyuri. The assailants were tied up and sat in an empty space in the supply carriage pulled along by the second carriage of the caravan. A guard took the reins at the front while at the back, Azi and Touma sat inside. Touma, who was in charge of the second carriage’s safety, was currently applying a magic binding spell on the assailants which caused them to feel sluggish and heavy. This magic spell derived its roots from colorless magic as it did not emit any elemental color when used. When Azi asked Touma about the spell, he commented that it sounded like gravity magic which sparked Touma’s natural curiosity that came from being the scholarly thaumaturge he was. A lengthy conversation about Azi’’s rudimentary knowledge about physics ensued and this was somewhat like a kind of punishment for the assailants. The constant back and forth of the two made it impossible for any of them to
After a somewhat rough awakening, Azi now stood outside of the carriage he was just sleeping in. The cold night air chilled his skin but it did little to help his situation as he could still feel the stinging heat from the red teeth marks on the side of his neck. He looked to his right and saw the offending person who had bitten him in his sleep. Noticing his gaze, Shizu turned her head away in embarrassment and coughed a bit to divert the conversation. “Let’s get going. If we don’t act quickly, the enemy will get away and we'll be left with no answers to our questions.” Azi sighed and gave a nod of agreement before running off with Shizu who was followed by a group of their caravan’s guards. Meanwhile, Kajima and Yashimu had agreed to stay near their carriage in order to keep watch over their belongings and to guard Rulu. Of the caravan’s guard detail of 50 people, 20 guards protected the first carriage, 10 guards with Ozen’s four youngest sons and Touma protected the second car
Duodecem 18th of 4831 AS During the end of winter, snow was still prevalent in the nation of Kujyuri as it was known for its year long snowfall. The caravan, while unhindered from the lessening snow, still felt the effects as the personnel still slightly shivered from the cold while in the middle of their trek through the forest and mountain paths of the snowy nation. It had been 3 days since the caravan had begun the 7 days journey to the capital and all their pace was good. It consisted of three carriages that each pulled along an additional storage carriage that was filled with the caravan’s belongings and supplies. They traveled in a line formation and were protected by the remaining group of guards that came with Rulu when she was traveling out of Kujyuri for the first time. Over half of her original guard was killed during the trek to Shisayama since they redirected their travel path to answer a distress call made by Shizu and her forces who were out on an expedition concern
Duodecem the 15th of 4382 AS On a somewhat warmer winter morning, for the first time in a while, Azi was spending time outside of his house and getting some exercise by sparring with Nosuri. As two arrows came flying at him, Azi jumped to the side in a panic. Being somewhat quick on his feet, he narrowly dodged it but was unable to retaliate against his opponent as he did not have his gauntlets equipped nor was he reinforcing his body with magic energy. In fact, Azi was purposefully not using his magic since the scrutinizing gaze that Shizu gave at the side told him to not even dare to try it. The reason for this started with Azi who, after constant protest, was able to convince Shizu to let him out of the house under the condition that he would be supervised by her at all times and that he did not use any magic. Shizu added the no magic condition as she had started to suspect that his magic energy was somewhat unusual and out of control. Recently, she deduced that a possible cau
A few days after Azi awoke from his long slumber, he felt a familiar, but overly warm sensation encapsulating him. His eyes flickered open as his usual habit of waking at the crack of dawn kicked in. He moved his head to survey his surroundings and he again felt a soft sensation brush against his cheek. Believing that it was a pillow, Azi proceeded to bury himself in its ever comfortable feeling. Unexpectedly, what caught his attention was that he felt as if the pillow was pushing him closer. It took him a couple seconds to realize that there were a pair of arms around his head that were holding him firmly while at the same time a pair of legs were wrapped around his lower waist. Waking up a bit more, Azi then realized that he was in the somewhat clingy, but unsurprising position of being hugged like a pillow by Shizu. For the past few days, Azi noticed that Shizu had become more clingy since the day he woke up. She would usually hug him from behind whenever they slept together in
On the night of the fourth day after the incident, Shizu had invited Rulu, Nosuri, and Ougi for dinner as Rulu offered to make Shizu a meal to help lift her spirits. While Shizu wanted to help cook for everyone she was not allowed into the kitchen due to Rulu’s insistence, so Shizu was relegated to setting the table. Her mind was still on Azi as he still showed no signs of waking up anytime soon, but after placing down the last of the plates Shizu caught a whiff of the food and felt her mind calm a bit. She then saw that the meal was ready as Nosuri and Ougi were walking over with plates of food in hand. Taking another whiff of the delicious smell in the air, Shizu sighed in relief and she complimented Rulu. “Your cooking always smells so good Rulu, I truly wish I could eat your food everyday.” Shizu then proceeded to rub her cheek against her younger sister’s as she gave a forceful hug charged with sisterly love. “T-Thank you Sister, but please not in front of the others. P-Ple
Shizu slumped on the couch in the living room of Azi’s house. It was a piece of furniture they had picked out on their day out due to how soft and comfy the black colored couch felt to the touch. Filled with Horonon feather, the couch felt somewhat firm but pliable like a stiff bean bag. Its outer cover was made of fur from an animal that was not local to Kujyuri which made buying it quite pricey, but the two of them chose to splurge a bit on their shopping date.It had been 3 days since the festival disaster and since then, Shizu and Yashimu were at work as they took turns throughout the day to take command of the relief efforts. One would take command of the village guard while the other would rest. It was currently Shizu's turn to sleep but she had to attend an unscheduled meeting with Jerome who demanded to see Azi.Shizu told him that he was injured during the disaster and that he would not be able to see anyone at the moment. This caused Jerome to protest and reasoned that he h
“Damnit!!” Shouted Jerome as he pounded his fist into the top of the table he sat at. He was currently inside his room at a luxurious inn. After his failed attempt to join the fight, Jerome was whisked away by his mercenary captain, Ghost.Due to Ghost’s rough handling of Jerome, the captain had inadvertently caused Jerome to pass out. While passed out, he had a continuous nightmare of his traumatic experience which eventually woke him hours after the battle ended. He was then called to meet with Shizu and Yashimu to discuss the relief efforts to combat the issues that will arise from this sudden monster attack. Jerome expected to get a tongue lashing from both of them, but he didn’t expect what was now on his table. After their meeting, Yashimu gave Jerome a packet of papers and was instructed to review them for the meeting that would take place the next day. It was already the middle of the night but Jerome, a “hard working” council member, pushed forward with his pride as his fuel
