Chapter 6 - You're a liar

As Jeremy listened to the endless ringing of Avery's voicemail, he felt a sense of growing concern. It was unlike her to leave their daughter alone like this. She would never do that, not without calling to let him know first.

He wondered if Avery had gone to her grandparents to ask for money to pay the hospital bills, since he had taken so long to arrive. Even though the thought of calling her grandmother made him shudder, he knew it was the only option he had left.

He dialed the number. As the phone rang, He wasn't sure what to expect. Would she answer? He wasn't sure, but he had to try.

After what felt like an eternity, the call was finally answered.

"Hello?" The voice on the other end of the line was crisp and clear, but the tone was unmistakably cold. It was Avery's grandmother.

"Hi, Mrs. Raymond," he said, his voice quavering slightly. "It's me, Jeremy."

"What do you want?" she asked, her voice harsh and unfriendly. There was no warmth there as usual.

He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. "I'm sorry to bother you, but I'm calling about Avery.I'm worried about her," he continued, his voice faltering. "I haven't been able to reach her, and I'm afraid something might have happened. I was wondering if you've heard from her recently or if she's with you."

There was a long pause, during which he could hear the sound of Mrs. Raymond's labored breathing. Finally, she spoke, her voice hard and unsympathetic. "What makes you think something has happened to her? I guessed that's why you abandoned her and your daughter in the hospital. You were expecting a bad news,"

The last thing Jeremy wanted was to engage in a verbal sparring match with her. He had anticipated such a cold response from her,

"Please, Mrs. Raymond," he said, doing his best to remain respectful despite his rising frustration. "I just need to know where my wife is. I'm not asking for anything else, just this one piece of information. Please."

Mrs. Raymond' gave mocking and cruel laughter. "You meant to say your ex-wife," she said, her words dripping with venom. "Avery has finally seen how useless you are and is divorcing you. She's now spending time with someone who's worthy of her."

"I'm used to you trying to drive a wedge between me and Avery," Jeremy said, his voice shaking with emotion. "But I never thought you'd resort to spreading lies about her, destroying her reputation in the process. I'm ashamed that you would stoop so low."

"We're all trying to fix the mess you made of her reputation," Mrs. Raymond said, her voice dripping with contempt. "Avery is out on a date with Her capable suitor who had helped paid Mia's hospital bills. They're in Freshville five star restaurant having fun and after that she will dump you like she should have done years back.Have a good day."

The line went dead. Jeremy was left standing there, speechless. He couldn't believe what he had just heard.

There was only one person who would be arrogant enough to take credit for paying a bill they didn't pay, all to win over Avery's affection, and that was Noah. Jeremy knew this with certainty. Noah had always been overly proud, always eager to show off his wealth and status. It was clear he was behind all this, and Jeremy was determined to expose him for the liar he was.

Without hesitation, Jeremy climbed into a taxi and gave the driver the address of the Fresh-ville restaurant.

As Jeremy pushed through the doors of the restaurant, he immediately spotted Noah and Avery seated in a private section. A waiter was standing at their table, serving them expensive delicacies. Jeremy could feel his anger rising, and he marched towards them, pushing past the security guards who tried to stop him.

With a loud crash, Jeremy flung the door open, causing the security guards to jump to attention. The force of the door opening startled both Noah and Avery, who looked up in alarm.

"What are you doing here?" Avery stuttered.

"You lying snake!" Jeremy screamed, launching himself at Noah. A few well-placed blows sent the other man stumbling backwards, while the security guards scrambled to restrain Jeremy.

Noah straightened up, wiping blood from his lip. "Is this how you return back a favor?" he said, his tone one of feigned concern. "You're making a scene."

But Jeremy was too angry to care. He struggled against the guards, desperate to get at Noah again. "You have no right to treat Avery like this!" he yelled. "She doesn't deserve your lies and manipulations!"

"What are you talking about Jeremy? Noah had helped paid Mia's hospital bills and this dinner is just a way of appreciating his kindness," Avery yelled.

"Are you kidding me?" Jeremy snapped, his anger flaring up again. "Noah's been lying to you. He didn't pay a single cent for Mia's hospital bills. I.."But then he caught himself, realizing that he couldn't reveal the truth about his new identity. Not yet, at least. Jefferson warned him about my father's enemies. He can't risk putting Avery and Mia in danger by telling her the truth about himself for now.He need to be patient and wait for the right moment.

"Were you there when he supposedly paid the bill?" Jeremy demanded.

"No," Avery replied, her voice shaking slightly. "I wasn't there. I was at the hospital when he arrived with my grandparents. He told us the bill had already been paid, and we had no reason to doubt him."

Jeremy felt his frustration mounting. Why was Avery defending him? Couldn't she see that he was lying? "But how can you be sure?" he pressed.

"That's enough. You should apologize to Noah for your behavior," Avery said, her voice raised in anger. "He saved our daughter's life. You left us hanging for hours with no explanation, and now you're trying to turn me against him? That's not fair."

"His apology won't change anything," Noah said, a sneer on his lips as he studied Jeremy with disdain. "I helped Mia because of you, not him. And if I were in his position, I would have done the same thing. He's nothing but a jealous, petty man who can't stand to see someone else succeed."

Jeremy clenched his fists at Noah's words, his anger simmering just below the surface. He wanted to punch Noah right in the face.

"You're a liar," Jeremy snarled, lunging towards Noah. But before he could reach him, Avery stepped in between them, holding him back.

"Enough!" she yelled, her voice stern and commanding. "This is madness. You have no proof to back up your accusations. My grandparents and I were there when the doctor confirmed that the bill had been paid. If it wasn't Noah, then who else could it have been?"

Jeremy could feel his temper rising, but he forced himself to calm down.

"If you really did pay the hospital bill, as you claim," Jeremy challenged, "then show us your call log from when you spoke with the doctor. Or, better yet, call him now and ask him to confirm that you were the one who paid the bill. Let's see if he can confirm your story."

Noah opened his mouth to reply, but no words came out. He fumbled with his phone, his eyes darting back and forth as he thought of an answer.
