Chapter 5

Gwen was stunned after seeing the screen, and sadness enveloped her. Her heart was heavy with grief, and she could not process the news that he had died. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she clenched her fists to contain herself and stop the flow of her emotions. She can feel her nails digging into her skin, but she is not in the mood to care.

She walked quietly over to the bedside of Old Smith. Her sister burst into tears, claiming that she was the sole cause of her grandfather's death.

“Take her out and give her some water to drink,” Gwen ordered her men and immediately they accompanied her sister out. Looking at how the situation has developed, the middle-aged doctor wishes to flee, but Smith's family bodyguards are not fools to let him go, even after witnessing what has just occurred. So they grounded him and didn’t let him flee away.

Gwen dailed back to Nathan with only Nathan's reassurance in her mind. His greeting was audible to her when the call was established a fraction of a second later. Upon turning to observe the voice's trajectory, she observed that Nathan had already approached the ward.

Gwen rose from her chair and approached Nathan, asking him to save her grandfather. Nathan said,

“Old Smith has woken up.”

When Gwen, the doctor, and the bodyguard heard his words, they turned around to see that her grandfather had awoken and was now standing on the bed, transforming into a vampire. His eyes turned red, his nails grew, and his claws protruded. Even before they could explain what had happened to the old man, Old Smith pounced on the nearby doctor.

When the Old Smith was about to bite on the middle-aged doctor’s neck, Nathan was quick enough to control him and then pushed him back to the bed. Following that, he immediately repaired the magical circle, allowing the old man to relax. Nathan ended the entire transformation after confirming that the old man was no longer affected by it.

The old man's body temperature gradually returned to normal, and he reverted to human form.

The events that had just taken place in front of their eyes completely astounded Gwen and the bodyguard, who stood there like statues. The whole ward was quiet and dimly lit, with the sound of the medical equipment providing an ambient backdrop. Everyone went tongue tied and they even forgot to take a breath after looking at how Nathan cured the old man and how he was able to cast the spell without much deliberation.

The middle-aged doctor was astounded by the turn of events as well, and after seeing Nathan's power, the doctor, who had been cowering on the ground moments ago, gathered his courage and crawled towards Nathan and kneeled in front of him.

Nathan arched an eyebrow but said nothing as he watched the doctor crawl over to him on his knees. He stood tall after casting a quick glance in his direction.

Remember that spell you cast earlier? I would like to know how to cast it again. Teach me, please,” the doctor pleaded.

Nathan’s expression hardens, sensing the selfish motives behind Dr. Daniel’s request.

“Magic is not a tool for personal gain, Dr. Daniel. It is a force to be respected and used responsibly. Why should I help you after the way you've disrespected it in the past?” Nathan answered.

“Please, I'll do anything. Just teach me the spell. I don't care about the consequences,” Dr. Daniel pleaded.

Nathan remains stoic and unyielding.

“I won't compromise the integrity of magic for your selfish desires. I won’t ever accept your request or teach you anything. Magic isn’t for selfish reasons." Nathan walked straight forward without any second thought and walked out of the ward.

After listening to Nathan’s direct rejection, Daniel felt disgraced and stood up from the ground. By sensing everyone’s looks down at him, he immediately stumbled out of the room, keeping his head low. He never faced an insult like this in his entire life. He always yearned for respect and power, which he always got without any doubt.

“Look after your grandfather and keep your eye on my sister. Don't let her breakdown,” Gwen ordered the bodyguard.

“I am going to drive Nathan back. Until I come, don’t do any mishaps and stay with grandfather,” Gwen informed her sister and ran out of the ward, living Old SMith on them.

“Mr. Nathan, I will drive you." Gwen reached Nathan by running as he was about to exit the hospital. She was huffing to catch some breath. Nathan didn’t reject her or accept her request. Gwen guided him to her car.

“Mr. Nathan, I am really sorry for what happened earlier in the hospital. I know my sister crossed her line today; please accept my heartfelt apology." Gwen apologized to Nathan on behalf of her sister.

Nathan just turned to look at her for a fraction of a second and he was able to feel the sincerity in her apology and her eyes were also saying the same.

“I didn’t care about it,” Nathan said calmly and his answer made Gwen feel a liking for it.

“After all the insults, he is able to understand our situation. With this talent, he can simply show off his attitude but he is a down-to-earth person. I am glad I met him,” Gwen thought in her heart.

"The Mr. Nathan Smith family is holding a charity dinner at Belloberg. I would be glad if you graced the event with your presence,” Gwen invited him to the event.

The charity dinner has a purpose behind it, as they are going to announce the partnership with Karina’s company and reveal a secret at that event.

Nathan neither accepted nor denied Gwen’s invitation. He had his doubts about the Smith family's investigation into him, and he certainly did not want Karina's life put in danger if his true identity were to be revealed. He has always wished that no danger would come to her and that she would be protected from all these complicated situations. He dreamed of a beautiful life with her, one in which she was safe, sound, and happy.

In a direct manner, he inquired, without even meeting her gaze,

“Are you investigating me?”

Gwen was taken aback for a second by his question, but she decided there was no need to hide it now that he had grasped the main point.

“I did look into you, and I am not going to hide anything from you anymore,” Gwen said. “I just want to be sure the man Deltery suggested was not dangerous—it does not mean I did not trust you. You are already aware of the paramount importance of security in prominent families like ours," Gwen explained, explaining why she was worried he would misunderstand her.

He refrained from asking any follow-up questions after hearing her response.

“Can we expect you at the charity dinner?” Gwen spoke to Nathan with a hint of optimism as she cautiously asked.

“As I am already divorced, it doesn’t matter to me who won the bid as long as he was Alex Atwood,” Nathan clarified and presented his opinion.

“No, you don’t need to worry about it. No one from the Atwood family was invited to the event and they are not even allowed into the dinner,” Gwen responded immediately.

When Gwen got to know that Nathan was divorced, she changed her mind and proposed.

“Umm, how about I treat you to dinner tonight?"

Nathan, who was thinking of starting his investigation into the Smith family and his parents murder case that year, thought that the offer from Gwen might help him in some way. After giving it some thought, he agreed.

“Ok, decide the location and let me know." Nathan accepted the invitation with the hope of acquiring at least a bit of information regarding his investigation.

The next second, the car came to a halt with a screech, bringing both Gwen and Nathan to attention. Even before they opened his mouth, the driver screamed,

“Mr. Nathan, please save my wife.”
