Chapter 2: The Unusual

Two weeks later…

"All teams set…The battle begins in 10, 9, 8, 7, 6…

Brendan takes a deep breath awaiting the countdown. His heart is racing and he feels discouraged for a second but then, he remembers all the training he has put himself through, even hurting his hands when practicing at home.

"You got this…you got this Brendan." Brendan said to himself.

"3, 2, 1….ALL TEAM DEPLOYED, WISH YOU LUCK."

Out of experience, Brendan was able to survive the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd wave.

Hunter VS Omar

Now, it's a one-on-one match. Brendan is good at this so he remained calm.

From the start, he already prepared a decoy just in case he reached the end.

"Hunter huh…come hunt me down." Brendan said.

As if Hunter heard Brendan calling, he started walking in his direction.

They were both deployed in an abandoned construction site with lots of exciting features.

Brendan and Hunter are both experienced gamers and they both had a little gunfight before Brendan went into hiding.

Hunter tracks him down again, and It is getting kind of unpleasant for Brendan. He could tell that Hunter has a master or legendary tracking device, which makes it easy for him to track his prey. So, Brendan had to come up with a new plan.

"He-he-he…(panting) Alright big guy, enough screwing around. 3,2,1."

Brendan remotely detonates the bomb he planted at the start of the game, but only when he is sure that Hunter got close enough.

The explosion distracted Hunter, giving Brendan enough time to gun him down. Making him the winner of the VR gaming finals.

"Yesssss!"

"Hahaha, he did it."

Everyone in the QASA research department who was watching, including Drummond, rejoiced after Brendan won the finals.

"Woohoo! Way to go man."

"That was sick bro. You won!"

Damian and Troy also came to support their friend. Despite the fact that they were not in support of it, the three of them always supported each other.

"Thank you guys for coming. I really appreciate it." Brendan said.

The trio did their friendship fist bump and received the award together.

"You see what I was talking about? He is our new hope for project Vibranium." Drummond said, feeling excited.

"Sir, this project has failed too many times. Don't you think it's time to abort?" Ricky suggested, not wanting innocent people to suffer the same fate as others who attempted.

"I will not give up until I find that vibranium. Experiment 700 is a go." Drummond insisted.

"We are taking a lot of risks and it's…"

"Enough! I abandoned my career as an astronaut to chase my dreams, and nothing can change that. I have sacrificed too much just to give up now. Keep an eye on the boy, he is our next target." Drummond concluded and walked away from the research department.

"Yes sir," Ricky replied with a frown.

It was September 11, 1999. Drummond and his team of astronauts traveled to space for inspection, but instead, he discovered a different thing entirely.

Drummond was a smart eighteen year old NASA astronaut, the youngest at that time.

"Have a seat, Drummond."

"Thank you, Sir. I won't take much of your time, just have a request to make." Drummond said, smiling.

"Okay. What is it?." His superior asked.

"I found something interesting outside space, something no one might have ever seen." Drummond giggles.

"Hahaha. Drummond, what are you talking about? We only have nine planets and we have studied them all."

"What if I tell you there is another, in outer space?" Drummond persisted and remained positive.

"How, where?" All of a sudden, Drummond's superior became interested and wanted to know more about the project.

"I will tell you, only if you assist me in getting these documents signed."

Drummond hands over the file for Project Vibranium to his superior. He aims to get NASA to grant permission to test the substance on humans after it is found.

"This is outrageous! We are not testing, whatever this thing is on humans. Now, tell me everything you know and where to find this mysterious planet." The superior insisted.

"I'm afraid I can't do that sir. You know what? I quit!" Drummond snatches the file, aggressively from his superior and slams the door on his way out.

NASA did their research, using every resource they had, but they found nothing related to what Drummond had alleged.

Drummond on the other hand did not give up, he strived for many years to build up his own agency and find the Vibranium.

After five years, Drummond finally built his agency in Liberia. He named it "Quantum Aeronautics Science Agency" and the motto is "Future of Aeronautics."

Drummond started searching around the world to find people to work with him. That's when he met Ricky, a well-known qualified scientist.

"I welcome you all to the future of aeronautics. QASA." Drummond briefed the team about his agency and they started working.

Every single attempt had failed from day one, up till date. They lost many lives (agents) over the years, outside space, all for the project Vibranium.

Team 699 was the last he sent before suspending the project and no one knew the secret behind the numbers. The only person Drummond trusted with his classified secrets was Ricky.

****************************************

Two days after the game, Brendan had a very complicated dream so he decided to share it with his friends in school.

When Brendan got to school he felt so excited to tell his friends about the dream, so just before the physics class commenced, he called Damian and Troy, with some other classmates together in a roundtable.

"What is so important that it couldn't wait? " Damian was the first to speak, as usual.

Brendan clears his throat and collects his breath. He suddenly feels uneasy but he just gotta tell them about this unusual dream he had. "Uhh I know you guys wouldn't care much about what I'm going to say but I want to tell you anyway."

"Sighs, I'm getting bored already. Let's hear it." Damian said, massaging his temples.

"Okay. Last night I had a dream…"

"What is it about?" Troy interrupted.

"You know about those system stuff?" Brendan asked with a bright smile, but it all faded away shortly when he saw the cluelessness on his friends' faces. So he thought of elaborating "The one like novels where people activate a system to be rich, powerful, smart…"

"Okay okay, what are you trying to say? Go straight to the point." Damian rudely interrupted and it seems he enjoys doing it to provoke Brendan.

"I activated one in my dream. It felt so good, it was like…"

Brendan started narrating in detail everything he encountered in the dream.

A screen appeared when he was in the middle of a game and displayed some analysis.

[Host found] [Systems Compatible] [Uploading…] [Soldier System] [Assassin System] [Gaming System] [Hallucination System] [Choose your march]

"For real? Wow, this is so awesome!" Brendan marveled.

"Definitely going for the Gaming system." Brendan replied, and then another screen popped up

[Acquiring Gaming System] [System detected] [Your chosen system is highly compatible] [Activating System] [*bling* Activation on que] [You will be informed when system activation is successful] "Wait wait, come back!"

"That's how the screen disappeared just like that." Brendan concluded.

His friends were throwing daggers at this point and Damian took the lead.

"So this is why you called all of us?" He laughed.

"Yeah," Brendan replied.

"Damn, this dude is going crazy about this gaming thing. Maybe we should seek help for you, Brendan." Damian lashed out, everyone could hear the anger in his voice.

The school bell rang and they all returned to their seats, except for Brendan who sat back, lost in thought.

"They don't believe me. I knew I should have just kept it to myself. Stupid system, maybe I need help." Brendan mumbled his way back to his seat for the physics class.
