Chapter 4. CONDITION OF DIVORCE

He got out of the car and ran straight to the hospital to save his sister and pay for his sister's treatment. Because now he had money to pay all the bills.

He was running around the hallways feeling anxious. His sister had to get immediate treatment or her life would be in danger and that had been bothering him ever since. He didn't want to lose his sister he loved so much.

"Excuse me, can I ask about my sister's hospital fees?" Edward said with a gasp. He tried to catch his breath, wiping the sweat dripping from his forehead and neck.

The nurse looked at Edward with confusion, but she tried to remain calm.

"May I know the name of the patient being treated? I need to check it on the computer so I can answer your question," she told Edward.

"Her name is Maria. She was brought to the hospital last night because of an accident. She needs to get treatment first, but the doctor told me that I need to pay off all the hospital fees if my sister wants to get intense treatment from the hospital," he explained.

"The patient's name is Miss Maria. Someone has paid all her hospital fees, so now you can rest easy," she replied.

"Wh-what?" Edward furrowed his brow in confusion. He was surprised to hear the nurse's answer. "But who paid all of Maria's hospital bills?" he asked.

Was it Robert?

"Miss Roselyn has paid all the fees, sir. The payment was made some time ago. It says here that she is the wife of the patient's guardian," she looked at Edward, "your wife," she emphasized.

Edward widened his eyes in shock. He could not believe what he was hearing. How could Roselyn pay for all his hospital bills? Where did she get that kind of money? Moreover, Lily, her mother, could not possibly allow her to spend money on Edward because she hated Edward so much. She hated him because Edward was a poor, useless man who married her daughter.

With trembling hands, Edward returned home and he rushed to find Roselyn who was in the backyard. He approached her, who was sitting alone on a long iron bench.

"Roselyn," Edward called out. "I have something to ask you."

Roselyn who realized Edward's arrival immediately stood up from her chair. She looked at him intently as if she had been waiting for Edward's arrival all along.

"About what?" Roselyn asked.

"About Maria's hospital fees. Is it true that you paid for everything?"

Roselyn was silent for a while. Edward gave Roselyn a confused look.

"Roselyn?"

"Yes, I paid for it," Roselyn finally answered. Her arms were folded across her chest. "My mother took the money that should have been yours and instead, I paid Maria's hospital fees with my own money. Didn't you say Maria should get treatment immediately?"

"Yes, that's true. But where did you get that much money? I'm very grateful that you're willing to help me, but it's a lot. Also, your mom will be furious if she finds out you helped me," Edward said. He swallowed hard. He was worried that Roselyn would get into big trouble for helping him.

He knew that their relationship wasn't good, but Edward cared about her. And he didn't want anything bad to happen to Roselyn, even if it was a small thing. Because he loved her.

"My mom knew and she let it go," Roselyn replied.

Edward furrowed his brow. "Your mom knew?"

"Yes."

Edward was silent. He felt there was something strange about Roselyn's demeanor today which seemed cold. She had never spoken this coldly to him.

"What exactly happened? Why does your mother suddenly want to help me?"

"It was my idea." Roselyn turned around and picked up something on the chair she was sitting on. A divorce decree which she showed to Edward.

"What is this?" Edward's eyebrows shot up one side. His heart skipped a beat as he saw the words 'divorce papers' at the very top. "Roselyn, what is this?" he stared at her in horror.

"You don't see it? You can't read it? It's divorce papers!" she shouted. "I want us to divorce Edward!"

"But why?" He glared at Roselyn. Not believing her because this was too sudden.

"Because after I married you. My life fell apart and no joy at all came to me. I was sick of living a miserable life. That's why I decided to divorce you!"

Edward shook his head in disbelief. "No, you're joking right?" he asked with a trembling voice.

"I'm not joking. Sign the divorce papers immediately," Roselyn said. "And about Maria's hospital fees that I've paid, consider them as compensation for our divorce."

"This is not your disposition at all, Roselyn. Why do you suddenly want a divorce?"

"It's not sudden. I've thought about it long enough. And I'm tired, Edward. I need a rich husband I can rely on. Not like you who only depend on my family's money. I need a husband who can take care of me both financially and with effort. And you don't have any of those criteria!"

Edward felt like he had been hit by a boulder which made his chest feel tight. He could hardly breathe. His eyes heated up. He clenched his hands together to keep the tears from falling. Trying to hold back his emotions that currently wanted to explode.

"Fine if you want a divorce," Edward said. He took the divorce papers from Roselyn's hand and squeezed them. "But on one condition Roselyn," he said to his wife.

"Condition?"

"After six months, I will sign the divorce papers. But during those six months, I will also ensure that we will not divorce. I swear that in that time, I will make everyone change their minds about me!"
