An explosion erupted from the building nearby. Fire swallowed the sky in a sudden burst and from within the blaze, a familiar figure emerged.

A girl with vibrant pink hair landed softly, using a swirl of flames to cushion her fall.

“Amber?”

I called out.

She touched down smoothly, her pyrokinesis flaring around her feet like a pair of fiery wings.

Fina and I rushed toward her, eyes wide with concern and curiosity.

“Amber, what happened?”

I asked, out of breath.

Amber glanced at me—but instead of answering, she turned to Fina.

“Fina, is Noah doing a great job protecting you?”

She asked with a teasing grin.

Fina gave a confident nod and smiled.

“Yup. He’s really reliable.”

Amber's eyes shifted back to me, scanning me from head to toe with skepticism. Her look said everything.

She wasn’t expecting much from me.

Her disbelief was practically visible, and she didn’t bother hiding it.

I frowned. “Don’t look at me like that…”

Amber chuckled. “Anyways, what’s going on here? That explosion…” Fina trailed off, prompting an explanation.

Amber crossed her arms.

“It’s a mission... A branch of yours, actually. We discovered an organization targeting the bodies of the students in comas. They’re trying to kidnap them for some unknown reason. I was sent in to eliminate the threat.”

She glanced over her shoulder. “Special Forces have already been deployed to protect the school and the hospital. Apparently, this case is turning into a big deal.”

“This is getting more frustrating by the minute…” Fina muttered, sighing. “We still don’t even know what’s causing the students to fall into comas. Or how many enemies we’re dealing with.”

Amber looked up at the sky, now painted orange with the hue of the setting sun. “It’s getting late… Are you two still in the middle of data gathering?”

“Yeah. We’re about to check the place where the most recent student was found unconscious…” Fina said. “We’re hoping to find something useful.”

Amber clicked her tongue.

“Noah still seems pretty useless for this mission. Maybe we should deploy Emma and Sion instead.”

“You really don’t have anything good to say about me, huh?”

Fina suddenly leaned in closer to Amber and grinned.

“That’s not true. Noah’s been very helpful. I think I’m starting to fall in love with him.”

Amber and I both froze.

“W-What?! This loser?!”

Amber shouted in disbelief.

“You really have a low opinion of me, don’t you?”

I grumbled.

Fina burst into giggles.

“Hahahahaha… I’m just kidding. I wanted to see Amber’s reaction. But I wasn’t entirely lying. Noah has been really helpful. And if we want him to keep improving, we should push him. Let him face dangerous missions like this. Near-death situations bring out the best in people.”

The last part of her sentence was scary.

Amber gave her a firm nod.

“I suppose you’re right. Exposing him to the darker parts of the world might be the fastest way for him to grow.”

She turned to me, her expression sharp and serious now. “Just remember one thing: No matter what happens, you must survive.”

I met her gaze and nodded. “Sure. I promise.”

Amber turned away and summoned flames to her feet again, rising into the air like a rocket.

“I’ll be going now. Finish your data gathering and head back. Everyone’s worried,” she said before vanishing into the sky.

“I wish I had an ability like that… simple but flashy,” I muttered.

“It really is convenient,” Fina added.

Later that night, Fina and I made our way to the place where Minami Saito had last been seen unconscious.

The area was still cordoned off with yellow caution tape, fluttering gently in the night breeze.

Investigators were probably still on the case—but at this hour, they were likely gone.

Fina didn’t hesitate to duck under the line.

“Is this okay? What if they find our fingerprints?” I asked nervously.

“You worry too much. Let future-you worry about future problems…” she replied casually. She’s already scanning the area.

I sighed and followed her.

Looking around, it was clear a battle had happened here. Melted iron bars, broken pavement, and piles of rubble covered the place. Even the nearby building looked half-collapsed.

“This iron was melted clean through…” Fina said, placing her hand on a scorched wall. “Minami’s ability really is something else. Melting thick iron like this? She’s not just a prodigy. She’s a national weapon.”

She tilted her head up. “Look—surveillance cameras on the building have been destroyed.”

Then she pointed to a nearby streetlight. “And that one too. Somebody made sure no recordings survived before this battle started.”

“This was a planned assault…” I muttered.

Fina clenched her fists and stomped the ground in frustration. “Grrrr! Grrrr! Grrrr! This is so frustrating!”

I blinked. I’d never seen Fina act like that before.

Then, without warning, she laughed—and flashed a bright, toothy grin. “I swear I’ll find whoever did this. This is just another challenge! Another test of my tracking skills!”

She could be terrifying when she gets like this.

Suddenly, a voice rang out from above.

“Target sighted.”

Three figures dropped from the rooftops—ninja, just like the ones we’d fought before, dressed in black and moving like shadows.

I instinctively grabbed Fina’s arm and pulled her behind me.

“Not these guys again… Ninjas? Really? Are you the ones behind the coma incidents?” I demanded.

One of them answered coldly. “We know nothing of your coma cases.”

“Our only mission is to remove variables that threaten our plans.”

“Our goal… is to destroy you,” they said in perfect sync, pointing directly at me.

“You’re going to take me out? Like hell I’ll let that happen!”

I readied my stance.

I’d trained under Lynn. Under Amber. I wasn’t the same weakling from before.

“Girl’s ability is unknown.”

“Unknown is dangerous.”

“Separate them.”

They moved faster than I could react.

Two of them struck me with such force I flew backwards like a ragdoll.

At the same time, the third grabbed Fina and flung her away in the opposite direction.

“Fina!”

“You don’t have time to worry about her…” one of the ninja growled. “Worry about yourself.”

The air shifted.

Two of them began to cast techniques.

“Deadly Hurricane!”

“Water Torrent!”

A spiraling force of wind and water hit me like a hammer, lifting me and dragging me far from Fina and our original position. I felt like I was being swallowed by a storm.

But then—Amber’s voice echoed in my head.

“Always remember… you must survive.”

No matter what… I will survive. Me and Fina—both of us!

“Reject!” I shouted.

My power flared, rejecting the wind and water around me. The storm exploded outward, and I dropped into a canal with a splash. Coughing, I swam to the side, dripping and shivering.

Then, I saw them. The two ninja were waiting.

“Kill this man!” one of them commanded.

But I stood up, soaked and bruised, and raised my fists.

“Come on, then.”

They called themselves the White Cult.Inside the grand, candlelit chamber, robed figures knelt in silence. At the altar, a young woman in pristine white vestments stood, hands delicately clasped as if in prayer. Her silver hair shimmered under the soft glow of flickering flames, and her blue eyes held an ethereal serenity. This was White—their revered leader, the chosen voice of their so-called divinity.Yet, beneath the gentle facade, something flickered.A kneeling disciple, drenched in sweat, trembled before her. “The operation in New Silicon Valley… it has failed. The ability user was captured.”White’s expression did not falter.
