Chapter 11
‘Mr. Hoffman?

Was he here for Fred?

Everyone in the hospital room was stunned momentarily when they saw the middle-aged man standing at the door.

Particularly the Cadman family members who had promised to drink toilet water if Fred managed to get the help of a doctor with the seniority of a hospital’s director. ‘He can’t possibly have succeeded, could he?’ they wondered to themselves.

After giving the middle a good look-over, someone suddenly jeered in disdain. “Don’t tell me this is the experienced doctor you were talking about, Fred!”

Everyone else laughed mockingly when they heard him.

While this middle-aged man looked well put together, his clothes were worn down and he looked pitiful.

Most importantly, any doctor with the seniority of a hospital director was usually around their sixties. This middle-aged man was only in his forties, and therefore too young.

“Oh, Fred! This is the doctor you were talking about? Hmph, do we look like idiots to you? As if we would believe any random man you bring over!”

“Hmph! How sly of you, Fred! You must have had this whole script planned out long ago! What a shame, you should never have forgotten your position in the family!”

“Trash will always be trash! Stop trying to lie to yourself and others.”

Following in the first person’s footsteps, the other Cadman family members began to ridicule Fred as well.

Karen went as far as to scoff with contempt. “Only trash like you could embarrass yourself like that! What do you have to say for yourself, Fred?”

“I am Fred, and who are you?”

Fred had remained silent the whole time. Ignoring Karen, he turned to answer the middle-aged man.

“Y-You’re Mr. Hoffman?”

The middle-aged man had yet to understand what was going on, but seeing that Fred had introduced himself, he quickly stepped forward and replied nervously, “M-Mr. Hoffman, it’s a pleasure… Wait, no! I-It’s a great pleasure to meet you! I-I am Henry Sage, from Sea City Health Center’s management office. You can call me Henry!”

“Okay, and…?”

Fred ignored Henry’s unimportant self-introduction and asked again.

Henry quickly continued, “I… Mr. Hoffman, I understand that you demanded ten minutes, b-but it’s just not enough time. I instructed the doctors to make their way over immediately, but I was worried that they still wouldn’t be here on time… so I decided to come here first! My sincere apologies, Mr. Hoffman!”

“Hmph! I have to say, you sure do act the part! But aren’t you supposed to be a doctor? Since when did you become the central administrator?”

Everyone heard what Henry had said, but the more he explained, the more contemptuous the Cadmans looked. One of them started to mock Fred directly. “Seriously, Fred. At least find someone who looks the part to play the role. Just look at him, how dare he call himself the central administrator?”

“P-Play what role?”

Henry was confused by what he heard.

“You’re still acting? Tell us the truth, already! How much did Fred pay you to act in front of us? I’ll pay you double the amount if you tell us the truth!” one person said.

Finally, Henry’s expression darkened upon understanding.

As someone from Sea City Health Center’s management office, Henry may not have as much authority as those in the administrative office. Still, he was a man of high position and had always been treated with respect. He had never been treated so rudely before.

Ever since Henry was promoted to his current position, he had never been disrespected as much as this man did today!

However, as someone of such high standing, Henry was not so stupid as to rise to that man’s taunts. Especially not before he could clarify how these people were related to Fred!

Henry recalled the phone call he received earlier. If these people were related to Fred, he truly could not afford to offend them.

With this in mind, Henry turned to ask Fred, “Good Sir, who are these…”

“When will they arrive?”

Fred did not answer Henry and interrupted him.

“I think… they should be here… any moment now…” Henry answered immediately, only to be cut off again.

“You’re still acting?”

Karen harrumphed. “Stop acting, Fred! Nothing is going to change the fact that you’re a wimp! What do you mean by ‘any moment now’? How much longer do you want to keep up this facade?”

“Watch your tone!”

Hearing the Cadmans mock Fred time and time again, Henry finally concluded that they were not on good terms with Fred. He scoffed and said, “It is a fact that every doctor that will come in later has more seniority than Mr. James!”

“Fact, my foot!”

Karen interrupted him ungracefully, “You’re just as bad as Fred, you liar! Stop acting like someone you’re not and get the Hell out of here!”

Then she turned to Yousef and smiled apologetically. “It seems like we’ve made a fool out of ourselves, Mr. Hanks. As you can see, my daughter Valerie and Fred are no longer together…”

Karen tugged Valerie over as she spoke. “Go on, Valerie, explain yourself.”

Valerie nodded and took a step forward as well. “Mr. Hanks! As… as long as you can save my father, I… I will be yours!”

Valerie might as well have grabbed Fred’s dignity and rubbed it into the ground using her foot by saying such a thing in his presence.

Yousef finally laughed loudly, feeling the pride of a winner when he heard her words.

“Haha! With such a promise, Valerie, how could I possibly ignore your father when he is in need of my help? Don’t worry, I’ve already asked someone to bring the director of this hospital, Mr. Ziegler over! He should be here shortly!”

Yousef gave Fred a meaningful look and sneered. “Unlike some idiot who’s acting out his little play, I have always been a man of my word. You can trust me.”

“Of course! You have never gone back on your words, Mr. Hanks! That wimp could never compare to you!”

“I would get lost and go back to where I crawled out from if I were him, lest I further make a fool out of myself in front of everyone!”

“Hey, Fred! We’re talking about you, you know! What are you doing still standing here?”

Everyone took a step toward Fred as they jeered as if they were trying to corner him and force Fred out of the room.

The sight worried Henry, but he did not know what to say. He knew that Fred had asked for doctors to save someone from the Cadman family. The same Cadman family whose other members were trying to shoo him away.

The relationship involved was too complex for an outsider like him to step in.

When suddenly…

Creak.

Someone opened the door again.

A group of old men entered the room as Henry did a moment ago.

“I apologize for our tardiness, Mr. Sage!”

One old man who seemed to have the most prestige gave Henry a slight nod when he entered the room before sweeping his gaze over the rest of the room.

“The man lying on the hospital bed must be our patient, then. I am Hunter Walls, director of The First Hospital.”
