Chapter 3: The Mysterious Gold Ring

Nathaniel sneered as he remembered Lindsey's last words before he left the house. There was no way he was going back to beg her. As he walked toward his parents' old house, the rain began to fall. He didn't bother to find somewhere to hide.

As he walked under the rain, looking frustrated, some boys hurried to where he stood, pushed him to the ground, and began to punch him on his face and the rest part of his body. At first, he was confused until he heard one of them say, "Hit him hard! He deserves it! Next time, he wouldn't have the guts to lay his hand on James Kesley." They didn't give him a break, they kept on punching him everywhere.

In anger, Nathaniel held the hand of one of the men and tightened his grip on his hand causing the guy to struggle to get away from him, as the bad guy struggled to move back, Nathaniel let go of the guy's hand causing him to immediately fall to the ground.

The guys that had their hands in the air ready to punch Nathaniel instantly paused as they heard one of their man wince in pain on the floor. Nathaniel immediately stood to his feet and hit one of them on the head. He was the kind of man who never ran from a fight.

He picked up a stick from the ground and targeted it at one of the men close to him. Before anyone could blink, Nathaniel hit the man's head, causing him to fall to the ground. Seeing this, the rest guys were frightened, but they refused to back down. Instead, they looked around them to see if there were other objects that they could pick up

In anger, one of them threw the stick they picked towards Nathaniel but he dodged it and caught the stick before it fell. Nathaniel broke it and threw it to the ground. He dragged one of the men by the collar and pushed him to the ground before punching his face so hard. The rest of them were so scared to get closer to him, so they ran off.

"Who sent you?" Nathaniel asked in anger and rage.

"Please don't take my life, I'm only doing my job," the guy pleaded it

"Shut your damn mouth and tell me who the hell sent you," Nathaniel said sternly.

"Your ex-wife, she asked us to teach you a lesson," he said and Nathaniel punched him again before letting go of his collar. He was breathing heavily. With a heavy heart, he walked down the damp road. There were mud stains on his shoes and he looked completely dirty with his ragged clothes.

He got to his late parents old house, the one he used to live in before Lindsey came into his life with the offer to change it.

The doorknob was broken, so it was easy for him to get in. "Holy cow!" Nathaniel said and started to cough because of the dusty smell of the house. All the furniture in the sitting room was broken, which indicated that the house was abandoned.

"No relative! No parent! No purpose to live! Like they all think, I'm just a poor church rat" He said as he walked into his late father's old and scattered room, his eyes fell on a rope just beside the bedside table. He slowly walked towards the bedside table and picked up the rope. As he turned to leave, his legs mistakenly hit the old wooden bedside table and it instantly fell.

Nathaniel just narrowed his eyes and was about to look away when his eyes fell on something that glittered. He moved closer to it and bent down a little. "A box?" He threw the rope to the ground before picking up the box, then he slowly opened it, only for his eyes to fall on a beautiful gold ring.

He was scared to touch it at first, but he inhaled deeply, knowing that he had nothing to lose. With care, he took the ring and observed it for a second.

"This is strange! How the hell can my father have real gold and let my mother die because we had no money to take her to the hospital?" He asked himself and arched his brows in confusion.

He gazed down at the rope and back at the ring. "This ring isn't fake." The words escaped his lips without his knowledge, but still, he wondered why his father had never mentioned having a precious possession. His father wasn't a greedy man, so that was definitely not an excuse

In hesitation, he wore the ring on his index finger and it fitted his finger perfectly, but then suddenly the gold ring glowed, causing him to quickly take the ring off. But just then, his phone began to beep, causing him to jolt back in shock.

He pulled his phone out of his back pocket, only to see that a private number was calling him. He felt reluctant to answer the call at first, but his phone didn't just stop buzzing.

He finally decided to answer the call, so he inhaled deeply and took the phone up to his ear, "Hello...."

"Hello! Is this the son of Troy Mickelson?" A thick muscular voice said, causing Nathaniel to quickly bring his phone down to gaze at his phone screen in fear.

"Who is this?" He said sternly. He remained calm and composed

"I cannot review my identity to you until I'm sure that you are the man I wish to speak to!" The man paused, giving Nathaniel some time to think

"Come out of the house with the gold ring you currently possess, I'm waiting by the door" His call died and in hesitation, Nathaniel turned to the door, shoved the ring into his pocket, and slowly walked towards the front door of the house.

Three cars and five hefty young men were waiting outside the abandoned house and the moment they caught sight of Nathaniel Mickelson, they immediately bowed their heads deeply

"Young master!" They said in unison. "He looks exactly like his father," one of the men in black suit said, leaving Nathaniel confused.
