Chapter 5-Began to Investigate

Jacob looked calm, even though he was still wearing simple clothes. Today, he was prepared for his mission, supported by Ewald the assistant and Emma. The luxury car stopped opposite a company that was reportedly in need of employees. Jacob carried Ewald's classically styled bag containing his job application.

“Good luck, Young master,” Ewald said from the driver's seat as Jacob stood by his side.

Jacob smiled with a nod. He looked so determined as he crossed over to apply for a job at the place. He met the security guard who was specially assigned that day to screen all the prospective employees in the company.

“I know the kind of job that suits you without having to look at the files. Go in, then use the fire escape. The elevator is too good for someone like you to enter,” the security guard sneered.

Jacob didn't answer, even though he was upset about being humiliated. It got him thinking, if people judge by appearances. Regarding whom the real identity is, it will be investigated when getting to know each other more closely. Jacob thought of an idea while following the directions of the Company's security guard. He climbed the stairs to the fourth floor. The security guard gave him an ID card which Jacob would later hand over to the officer at the place.

“Hello?” called Jacob when he pushed a glass door because it looked quiet from outside.

A man in his forties stared at him intently. Scanning from his shoes to the unknown man's hair, that showed a smile.

“You've been accepted. Go to the end of the corridor, and you'll find your job,” the man said matter-of-factly.

“Oh, thank you, Mr. …,” Jacob replied, trying to find the identity on the clothes of the mustachioed man in front of him.

“Rafael. Mr. Rafael,” he replied curtly. Jacob nodded and quickly headed to the end of the corridor. He didn't expect it to be so easy to get a job. However, as soon as he arrived in the room mentioned, Jacob froze. "Want some money? Get to work, slacker!" screamed Rafael. Jacob was stunned, but he hurried to put his bag in a locker without a lid. Rafael threw a pile of rags at Jacob roughly. "Put that on. Finish work at 6pm," he added with a sharp glare.

Without saying much, Jacob immediately put on his janitor's clothes. He, who was used to being a servant in the Kaye family, quickly left the room to clean the first floor as ordered by Rafael. However, unexpectedly, an unexpected figure appeared.

“Hahaha! He's here!” a woman shouted out loud when she saw Jacob mopping the lobby floor. Jacob froze with a sharp look in his eyes. The woman was Carol, his wife. However, Jacob has yet to sign the divorce papers. Carol waltzed in showing off her new ring. Jacob suspected that the shiny object was Diablo's gift. The employees who saw the unnatural thing in front of them chose to watch. “You're brave to show up here, Jacob. That's amazing,” Carol said with a low look.

“You still dare to address me, Carol. Changed your mind to love me?”

Suddenly, Jacob's words made Carol's eyes bulge. “Disgusting!” she shouted angrily.

Carol kicked the bucket of mopping liquid and flooded the floor. Carol left with bated breath. Jacob was stared at by everyone, who whispered about him. As Rodriguez's descendant was about to mop, suddenly, his back was pushed so hard that he fell down hard. The clothes he was wearing were soaked, including the cleaning supplies scattered in the lobby.

“Yes, that's how you're supposed to clean this floor, Jacob. With your body!” said a man whose voice Jacob recognized and was none other than his father-in-law, Samuel.

Jacob tried hard to contain his anger, even though he was already in his head. The employees were increasingly talking about him with condescending looks. Jacob stood up slowly and kept his balance to avoid slipping on the slippery floor.

“Sorry, Mr. Samuel. He is a new employee and is still on probation,” said Rafael, who arrived suddenly in a panic.

“Ah, I see. That's good. He owes the Kaye family a lot of money. During the probation period, don't pay him!” he ordered, leaving the audience stunned.

“Yes, Sir,” Rafael replied as he glanced at Jacob sadistically. Mr. Rafael smiled sarcastically as he zipped up his jacket.

"You can all tell him to do things that I forbid. Make good use of it," Mr. Samuel said as he walked away.

“Wow! Must be a lot of debt for Mr. Samuel to say that,” Rafael said, making Jacob's breath catch. “Don't keep quiet, lazy! Clean up your carelessness!”

The employees hurried away. Jacob mopped the floor with a cold face. He didn't expect to be humiliated again right in front of everyone.

“This company will only last as long as my probationary period as an employee, Mr. Samuel. You'll see,” Jacob muttered as he dried the floor with a rag.

That day, Jacob was tasked with so many things that he couldn't even take a break for a drink. Jacob, who was exhausted, left the room of employees who were preparing to go home. Until he was shocked again when he met Diablo embracing Carol intimately. Jacob's heart was hot again.

“You're lucky, Honey. Hiring a useless man without pay,” Carol said mockingly.

“Yes. The company will make a comeback thanks to the Kaye family's support,” Diablo said proudly. “I'm not inviting you to our wedding next month, Jacob. So, don't try to ruin it, or I won't hesitate to make you homeless.”

“I heard that your guests chose to attend the birthday of Rodriguez's son,” Jacob replied calmly, but made Diablo's eyes widen.

“Who the hell do you think you are, ha!” shouted Diablo angrily with two hands firmly gripping Jacob's collar. Carol looked panicked as the office was still full of people and the company officials were still there.

“Word travels fast, Mr. Diablo Torres,” Jacob replied with a tense face.

Just as Diablo was about to slap him, he heard footsteps approaching. Diablo immediately released his grip. Several men and women walked toward him with serious faces.

“Is there a problem, Diablo?” asked a man with white hair, mustache and sideburns, looking very powerful.

“No, Father. Just telling this new employee that he needs to maintain good manners. I heard from the employees if he dared to refuse their request to do a job,” replied Diablo who suddenly changed his attitude.

The man Diablo called father approached. Jacob stood tall as he was stared at by the man, until his forehead furrowed when he saw the ring worn by the man dressed as a servant. Instantly, the big, tall man was stunned and stepped back.

“What's wrong, Mr. Torres?” asked Carol in surprise because suddenly the man who was known to be violent seemed to be surprised by something.

“You idiot!” shouted Torres, immediately grabbing his son by the coat. Diablo was confused because his father was suddenly angry. Everyone was tense because it was unusual for Mr. Torres to scold his favorite son. Jacob quickly took off the ring and put it in his pants pocket.

“I'm fine, Mr. Torres,” Jacob said calmly as he walked over. The gray-haired man immediately turned his head and released his grip on his son's clothes. He approached Jacob with a nervous look on his face, but the Rodriguez descendant just smiled. “It won't be a big deal if it's kept private and not publicized.”

“Of course,” Torres replied in a whisper with a nod, not daring to look at Jacob.

“If so, I'll excuse myself. There's still a room to clean,” he said and passed through the crowd of people in the corridor.

Torres froze, not daring to turn around just to look at the man he knew was one of the richest businessmen in the city of Rowbon. Jacob continued to perform his duties for up to a month at the Torres Corporation. When it was time to go home, Jacob was suddenly pulled strongly and then his body was pushed until his face hit the metal locker door. The man didn't know who attacked him.

“You humiliated me in front of my father, Jacob. Apparently, your upbringing on the streets has made you fearless, huh? You think you're free now that you're out of the Kaye family. Let me tell you one thing, Jacob. Kaye is hunting you and will make your life a misery. You'll spend the rest of your life stressed out with no happiness until you decide to end it all for good,” Diablo said fiercely.

“I look forward to it,” Jacob replied fearlessly, but it infuriated Diablo.

As Diablo turned Jacob over, his cell phone suddenly rang. Diablo was upset because he failed to beat Jacob. Jacob saw Torres' name on Diablo's phone screen. Carol's husband-to-be pointed at Jacob in a threatening tone. However, the handsome man was just silent.

Jacob, who didn't want to waste time because he was exhausted, hurried to take off his work clothes while at the company. He went out and crossed the street. Jacob walked to a convenience store and entered it. The cashier only glanced at him as he passed by and went into the warehouse. Jacob walked leisurely to the exit through the back lane.

“Hempf,” Jacob grumbled as he sat in the center seat of a luxury car parked on the street behind the convenience store. “Hem, I see. Diablo is afraid of his father, Mr. Torres. And Mr. Torres seems to know me.”

“Oh, really? So… what are you going to do, Sir?” asked Ewald, whose face was partially visible through the reflection of the car's center glass as he sat on the driver's seat.

“I would like to investigate further, Ewald. Was Torres involved in the attempt to take my family's assets or not?”

“Ah, I see. However, from what I hear, you are not being paid, Sir. How do you pay me?” asked Ewald as he looked back, but the question made them both laugh.
