CHAPTER 09

Anita looked at Bryan with a sceptical smile and let out a disbelieving chuckle. She didn't want to believe what she was hearing

She let out another sarcastic laugh which left Bryan looking bewildered and speechless.

"You want a divorce? Is that a threat or some kind of joke? She said looking at him amusingly and at the same time mockingly.

"Yes, Anita I need a divorce he answered firmly." Anita's face darkened, all the traces of amusement and sarcasm gone in an instant.

She looked at him with some much disdain written all over her face as she approached him.

"Do you want to divorce my daughter? her father asked his voice filled with doubt. Bryan remained silent, his expression unreadable.

"Have you gone dumb? his mother-in-law asked looking at Bryan with pure contempt and disdain in her voice.

"You can't say anything again? I thought So. Silly jokes are not tolerated in this house". She warned and with that, she turned and left for her room with her husband following behind.

"Am sure you're just bluffing. Anita said without care. "Again stop playing games around here". Anita said as she grabbed her handbag. She turned and walked towards her room, as she took the next step, she noticed Bryan in front of her blocking her way.

"I mean what I have just said Anita, I can't do this again, am tired of your humiliations and it's obvious am nothing but just an object to you.  Am just a convenience to you, a way to get what you want. And besides, I know you don't love me anymore. Because if you do why will you cheat on me?  You need to be let free so that you can frolic around with whoever you want. I will get the divorce papers tomorrow". he said and was about to turn when a thudding and hilarious sound of glass shatters stopped him.

"How dare you divorce me, Bryan, after everything I have done for you", She screamed in fury. She was already mad as sweat drops threatened to fall from her face, she was truly infuriated.

"You look at me and tell me you need a divorce, of all days, my birthday? She charged at him looking so defeated. Her face was as if she was going to turn a murderer at that moment. In a sudden fit of rage, she picked up the glass flower vase from the table and hurled it at him, missing him by a hair breath.

Bryan shrieked in awe, he hadn't expected Anita to react so violently and abusive.

She was so enraged in anger that she searched around the living room to get hold of anything she could use as a weapon. She was already breathing heavily, her eyes wide and unfocused.

Bryan was still surprised at her behaviour, he didn't know why she was in so much fury after he had told her to let him go.

She looked so angry for being rejected but she didn't want to accept the fact.

Bryan didn't expect she would be so bitter seeing the way she had maltreated him.

He thought he was doing her a favour by releasing her from a poor man and a pauper who couldn't take care of her, but he couldn't still understand why she was so upset about the divorce.

He knew he had not been useful to the household and couldn't provide for her financially. So instead of her seeking comfort elsewhere since she had lost interest in him, he thought the best thing was to let her free rather than remain in a loveless marriage. But he hadn't expected such anger in response to his suggestion of divorce.

Anita glared at Bryan with so much anger and detest before she stormed out of the living room.

******

The remaining of the day was quiet and cold, everybody In the household had gone to rest.

Bryan walked around the compound feeling disturbed the whole thing that happened that day pondered in his mind.

The whole day was a total waste and a horrible one. His whole plan of making his wife's birthday a blissful one was all in vain.

The memory of his wife and the employee at the office was like a knife in his heart. The feeling of her betrayal made him more angry. He never believed a day would come when his wife would cheat on him.

Although he didn't have enough money and funds to finance her needs, he still tried to take good care of the house and also take care of her sexual needs.

He wondered why Anita would cheat on it and make it look like there was no big deal in what she did. He didn't care if she had treated him badly but cheating on him was the most cruel thing to do.

On the other hand, Bryan wondered how his life would be after he had divorced Anita. He knew he had nothing and nowhere to go. He knew It would be a devastating one for him, and worse, he didn't have enough money to support himself after the divorce.

He had used all the money he had saved on preparing for her birthday and nothing else was left for him. He knew that in as much as he was so angry with Anita, he needed to cool off his mind and try to forget about what happened today if he wanted to still stay in her house. After all, she had been good to him and had helped him provide for his needs when he had no one to care for.

He realised that the only way forward was to forgive his wife and forget the events of the day, that was the only way he could continue living with them. And getting a divorce was going to be expensive besides he didn't have a lawyer and the cost of the divorce process.

Bryan returned to the kitchen to clear and clean all the decorations and dishes he had made for Anita since it seemed like no one had any appetite for it including him. The foods and drinks he had arranged were still intact and untouched.

After much thought, Bryan came to a decision.

He was going to tell Anita that there was going to be no divorce and also beg her to forgive him since he had made such a statement out of anger and the feeling of betrayal. He knew it was a hard decision but he needed to let go.

"Yes! That's what am going to do tomorrow morning" Bryan thought as he left the kitchen to his room.
