Grandfather

Chris's mouth instinctively opened in awe as the man before he addressed him as his "son".

"I beg your pardon." Chris narrowed his gaze at the man, his voice calm yet firm, etched with curiosity.

The man snapped his fingers in the air and a man in black approached Chris, handing over to him a business card.

"I'm your grandfather, Christopher Valgar." The man informed as he mentioned Chris's full name. A smile plastered across his face, that sent shivers down Chris's spine.

Chris glanced at the card and saw the man's name boldly written on it and his photo beside it. His gaze was fixed on the man's surname, it was familiar.

"My grandfather?" He muttered to himself.

The man nodded. "I'm your grandfather, the father of your deceased mother."

That's it!

It all made sense now, no wonder his surname looked familiar.

"You're my grandfather?" Chris looked up to the man who smirked as he walked up to Chris patting his back.

"Yes."

Chris narrowed his gaze at him and pushed the man's hands off his shoulder. "You! Why come back now after both of them are dead?" Chris asked furiously, anger and hatred flashed in his eyes.

The old man heaved a sigh. He retreated in his steps. "Your mom disobeyed my orders. She was blinded by your father's love and now where is she? If only she had listened to me she would have still been alive." The man explained.

Chris felt his heart clench. He didn't know what to do as he felt weakened by his so-called grandfather's explanation but the old tall man had a point.

His mother would have still been alive if only she hadn't eloped with his father; a man who owed several debts before he died. He died without any dignity.

He didn't want to agree to the old man's words even though he knew the old man had a point. "You would have at least given us a helping hand. My parents suffered till death and you only showed up right after my father has been buried."

Chris's yells were enough to make one of the hefty men attempt to shut him up but was stopped by the old man's signal.

The man stepped forward and held Chris's shoulder. "Son, I never knew your mother had a son and never expected she'd be able to give birth eventually. I doubted that your deceased father could take care of a child."

"Why are you here then?" Chris asked, moving straight to the point as he didn't want to have anything to do with his grandfather.

"I'm here to make you my heir. I regret my actions for chasing your mother away and I'll make it up to you." The old man's voice was firm, his aura emitting dignity and authority.

Chris eyes balls shook in astonishment but he wasn't moved. He can't be bought just that like.

"I have to work on my own and clear the debts my deceased father owed," Chris said.

The man chuckled. "You don't have to worry about that."

Chris wondered what was amusing the old man to make him let out a dark chuckle. He raised his brow, the old man noticed that the latter wasn't moved by his promises as he cleared his throat to make his intentions known to him.

"Look, son, I have a large firm and I want you to be my heir. You're the only one I have, you won't have to suffer to fend for yourself. Everything you need in life will be at your doorstep, women, money, power, anything at all."

"Money? Power?" Chris repeated. That'll be a dream come true for Chris. He couldn't even imagine himself in such a position where power and wealth would be his. He instinctively checked his grandfather's business card and saw his company's name on it. "No way!"

"What's the matter, son?" The old man asked in curiosity.

"Sir...I mean, grandfather, you're the owner of RIC Corporation?" Chris asked in disbelief.

The old man nodded in response and didn't see a reason why Chris would be amazed by that.

"I've dreamt of working there after college." A genuine smile was plastered on Chris's face as he immediately accepted his grandfather's proposal.

It was indeed a dream come true for him when he had least expected it. He didn't even have his college certificate because of how he left the graduation ceremony brokenhearted. All his hopes had been crashed down because he knew he couldn't work at RIC Corporation without his college certificate but now, the proposal was right in front of him.

His grandfather ordered for a contract to be brought out. A man handed over a document to Chris's grandfather which he handed over to Chris.

"Sign that contract. I'll have to show that to the management and will introduce you to everyone as the new CEO of RIC Corporation." The old man smiled as he watched Chris stare at the documents in astonishment. He was glad the latter didn't turn him down and accepted his proposal, if not, he would be left without an heir and die with his properties shared amongst strangers.

Without hesitation, Chris signed the contract without even going through it. Being the CEO of the most prestigious organization in the country was enough to wash his sorrows away.

The old man rejoiced in his heart when Chris handed back the documents to him. "Thank you, son. My phone number is on my business card and call me if you need anything or want to move in with me." The man offered.

"I will, sir... grandfather."

"Those that humiliated you, will bow before you!" The man said before chuckling as he bid Chris goodbye and left with his men. Chris was all alone beside his father's grave smiling all to himself.

He walked out of the graveyard with a renowned smile on his face when he accidentally bumped into someone.

It appeared to be a lady who by any chance wasn't watching where she was heading to. The lady missed her steps and was about to fall when Chris grabbed her by her waist.

"Are you alright, miss?" He asked, his voice etched with worry.

The lady removed the hair that fell on her face as she locked her gaze on Chris.

Chris's eyes widened in awe as he was about to loosen his grip on her.
