CHAPTER 4

Romeo had expected to see his wife all smiles cuddling her new born baby, that was what he worked hard for right? That was what he went through the humiliation, scorn, he even had to engage in duels and street fights so he could win the bets and provide what he could.

Now his street fights were not void of injuries because he suffered various cuts, bruises, he even had a swollen jaw, however he didn't consider it too much for his wife, he believed his wife and unborn child deserved the risks, insults and embarrassments he went through.

He saw Linda crying with nothing by her breast or her side. All he could see was her mother, brother and sister consoling her.

This made him to be puzzled. "What the fuck is happening." He thought. He rushed to her side shoving Flanagan her brother away.

"Hey watch it you beast of a man. Jesus, you stench so bad." He held his nose. Not that he was smelling like shit but Romeo usually wore old clothes and the scent of the old clothes was repulsive to Flanagan.

Romeo didn't mind him. "Hey Linda, why are you crying?" He put his arms around her shoulders and kissed her on her nape. "Are you alright? Where is the baby?"

The Davidson's, including Andrew wore annoyed, condescending and disdainful looks on their faces.

Linda was silent as she continued to sob.

Romeo was confused concerning the whole situation but he decided to press on. "Come on Linda, what happened, were is the baby?"

"Come on Linda, tell him were the baby is?" Mrs Davidson her mother said authoritatively.

Linda looked at her mother and looked at her husband Romeo before pointing at a crib beside her which was over to her right hand.

Romeo looked to were Linda had pointed, however as he moved to the crib, he was shocked when he saw that the figure inside the crib was covered from head to toe.

Romeo did not need telling that what was in there was a lifeless body.

He hastily opened it and found a stiff and lifeless naked body of a baby girl with eyes and nose resembling that of his. It was his daughter and she was like his carbon copy.

Immediately Romeo fell down to his knees and began to cry bitter tears. He was shocked, he was frustrated.

All the humiliation, pain, injuries, the blows he suffered, just to bring his first child to this would ended in misery. It was all for nothing.

The Davidson's and Andrew showed no sign of remorse, however Romeo still with tears in his eyes moved to Linda's side with the aim of consoling her.

"Baby, I am sorry for all this, I'll take the blame for this okay, this is non of your fault." Romeo had no idea what was coming next.

"Leave me alone!" Linda yelled at Romeo leaving him shocked to his bone marrow, making him to be shattered into splinters.

As Romeo looked at Linda, he noticed an angry face that he had never seen from Linda in his life. "Baby what is going on?"

She sniffed hard before saying. "Don't ask me any stupid questions, I am tired of all this."

Romeo furrowed his eyebrows. "You are tired of what?" He asked.

"I want a divorce, I cannot be married to you anymore, it is too much on me."

Romeo couldn't believe his ears. This was a lady he loved, a lady he risked his skin to save from the ghasty inferno that emanated from the gasoline tank which claimed lives.

This was a lady he stooped so low to participate in street duels with monstrous looking men, wrenching his skin and face, receiving blows, he even dislocated his shoulder and fractured his wrist, just to proof to her that he loved her, that despite his lowly status, he was ready to be a man for her.

"But…but…I love you so much..."

"Victor I cannot do this anymore!" She yelled once more and continued to sob.

Mrs Davidson tapped Romeo on the shoulder. "Romeo, can you see what I have been telling you all this while? When I using my strength to warn you against envisaging success in your union with my daughter you thought I was some evil witch. See for yourself. You lost your child because of your poverty and if not for our quick intervention you would have lost her too."

Andrew walked to Romeo and stood in front of Romeo and held his shoulder. "Romeo, come on man look at me." Romeo who was face down had his head lifted up by Andrew and Romeo who was downcast peered into Andrews sharp eyes.

"Look man, let me advice you. You are in a pathetic state, you are no good at the moment. Now is there any possibility that your horrible state of poverty is going to change, no one knows and not one of us inside this room including the gentle innocent soul of your dead baby cares including Linda even. Before God and man you are a failure, you do not deserve to exist. " Andrew smiled sinisterly.

Romeo felt like punching Andrew in the face, but he was to weak to do so due to the events that had unfolded. He also began to think that there were some elements of Truth in what Andrew was saying.

"I believe you are in extreme pain right now, but I and the Davidson's are willing to relieve you from that burden. That is why you are going to sign these divorce papers, to allow Linda to be treated properly and enjoy the wealth and glamour that she deserves. Huh?"

Jane Davidson brought out some divorce papers contained in a file and placed them on a mobile table which was moved close to Linda's bedside.

Immediately Linda grabbed a pen. She looked a bit hesitant to sign the papers but shooking her head she signed it anyway.

It was Romeo's turn to sign, however before he signed, he took the pen and looked at his wife Linda.

Linda fixated her eyes on him and in an instant he was surprised to see that she needed this divorce because her eyes looked like she was begging for this divorce.

"Romeo please…just let me go…please." She begged.

Romeo was hit hard by the whole scenerio. He began to feel like he was caging her and holding her back from all goodness in this world.
