CH003: One Of A Kind

“I am one of a kind and only serve one purpose. That is to enable my users to earn their well-deserved revenge. While you were dying, your strong sense of grievance and vengeance triggered my activation. In order to save you, I had your soul transmigrated here, a different part of Philadelphia you never knew existed and into this body which used to belong to one Jedidiah Jetti,” the system narrated.

Jed was surprised to find out the original owner of this body bears the same name as him.

Before he could ask any questions, Vendetta continued, “System found this body a suitable vessel for you because yours and the original host’s fates are quite similar. Before his demise, Jedidiah used to be an orphan like you after his only parent, his mother, died of a strange mental illness. The boy would have been thrown on the streets if someone had not anonymously recommended him to this prestigious academy, Elites High, earning him an automatic scholarship.”

Jed looked at the screen eagerly when Vendetta paused. He wanted to know the rest of the story and how the boy died.

Vendetta didn’t disappoint, “However this prestigious school is made up of students from different homes. They couldn’t handle the deceased Jedidiah’s shameful background and the fact that he was an F grade student that never passed any of the tests and exams so he quickly became a target of bullying."

"I as a system do not understand what the late Jedidiah was thinking when he decided to have a crush on Jane Doe, the school queen and even pursued her openly. He went as far as writing a love letter packed with those terrible grammars of his and was going to read it to her right here on this podium in front of all the students. How did he never notice their tricks?”

Jed’s frown deepened when he got the full story. The original host of this body was a high school student with terrible grades and bad background that made other wealthy students torture him.

He happened to have a crush on the school queen and must have been told by her to read the letter of confession in front of other students which turned out to be a wicked prank in the end. But how did he die?

“It just so happens that Jane has a boyfriend, Cullen Jetti, who is the school prince. He got into a fight with the late Jedidiah and pushed him off the podium which led to the untimely demise.”

Jed thought of the couple he saw on the podium just now. Were they Jane Doe and Cullen Jetti? Wait, Cullen…Jetti?

“Why does this school prince share the same name with the deceased host?”

“Because they are in fact related!” Jed displayed a look of astonishment when Vendetta said this.

“The Jetti’s affairs are more complicated than what the society knows. To everyone here, Cullen Jetti is the school prince while Jedidiah is just an ill-bred who coincidentally shares the same last name with the former. No one knows that Jedidiah is the dirty secret of the Jetti’s family. And this news isn’t to be revealed till tomorrow before the unfortunate demise of the original host.”

Hearing all these explanations, Jed was speechless. He used to think his life was miserable but listening to what the original owner of the body has had to pass through, he realized his mindset was completely wrong.

He sighed; what sort of cruel joke is the heavens playing on him? His first life was miserable enough and now, he has to play out the even more miserable life of a young scholar.

“What is my role in all these?” he couldn’t resist asking Vendetta.

“Simple, you have to navigate the deceased Jedidiah’s life for him and help him get his revenge. Only then will your vindictive quest be completed. You do have a vital task to accomplish but it will only be revealed when the news of this body being an illegitimate son of the Jetti’s goes viral. For now, it is advisable to do a lot of kind deeds and focus on any minimal tasks given by the system as their reward points will be very useful.”

Jed nodded and rubbed his chin. He only needs to be kind, complete his tasks and earn some reward points.

“As one of the perks of having me as your host system, I have a gift for you,” When Vendetta said this, a gift image appeared on its screen and Jed clicked on it to accept it.

A message followed, "Congrats you have acquired the mind reading skills. There are more perks to be unlocked when you begin your vital task. But try completing some minimal tasks as soon as possible because your body assessment isn’t looking too good.”

Jed frowned and looked down. Some words appeared on the screen,

Body assessment:

Strength: 0%

Fat: 70%

Weak: 30%

He was horrified when he heard this. Just how much did the late Jedidiah consume to get this chubby? No wonder, he felt heavy earlier when he stood up.

“I think this Dumbo needs to be sent to a psychiatrist! The fall must have really affected him,” one of the students mocked when he noticed that Jedidiah had been mumbling to himself for so long.

The virtual screen in front of Jedidiah disappeared and he became aware of the real world again.

‘We only need to communicate through your thoughts now or the students would think you have definitely gone bonkers,’ Vendetta said in Jed’s head and the latter was speechless. Is it even legal for a system to use words like ‘bonkers’?

“Why aren’t you saying anything?” someone pushed Jed. He was caught unaware and nearly fell. “Has the fall really made you dumb? Well, not like it would make you dumber than you already are!”

The students guffawed. Jed was irked and was just about to retort when two boys hurried over through the throng with some teachers behind them.

As they came over, Jed heard one of the boys’ thoughts,’ I hope Cullen gets the punishment he deserves. I’m sick of him getting away with every wrong act all the time just because he is the golden boy.”
