Chapter 6

It had been two weeks since Jake took over his father's businesses, and he had won the hearts of many already. Earlier today, he had left for Burutan to complete his divorce process in court.

Outside the courtroom, Jake stood next to a car with a sunglass in his eyes when he saw Maron walking towards him.

“Not again," he muttered and turned to walk away, but he bumped into Georgina.

“Hey, watch your steps," he yelled.

“What is it? You have the divorce, right? What else do you want? Shouldn't you be planning on your new marriage with that asshole behind me?"

Georgina swallowed hard and sucked her lower lips.

“Listen Jake. I just want to know why you beat up my Mom before leaving the house that day. That wasn't cool, and my Mom has refused to let that slide.”

Jake raised his brow. “Seriously?” He asked in surprise.

“First of all, I didn't beat your Mom. Yes, I slapped your Mom because she broke my mother's gift. But what do you intend to do anyway? How do you intend to punish me for that?” He asked curiously.

“I don't get to. Maron already promised to handle it. Listen, just apologize and I'll help you talk him out of it.” Georgina said, and Jake scoffed with a low grin on his face.

“Apologize? To whom?" Immediately, a hand tapped him from behind, and he turned around.

“Hello, Jake," Maron greeted with disdain all over his face. “It's good to see you're doing well. I heard you almost died after being knocked out by a vehicle.”

Jake smiled heartily. “What can I say? God is great indeed. I didn't think I would survive, but here I am."

“Oh yeah?" Maron chuckled. “You see, after you left I came to find out that you beat up my soon-to-be mother-in-law.”

"Now listen Jake, I'm a cultured man. I hate it when grown men disrespect elderly people. You know you have some apology to make right? Surely you don't want to keep me waiting," Maron stated firmly, and Jake went quiet.

He sighed and shook his head in disappointment, while Georgina watched in silence.

She winked at him, signaling him to go ahead with the apology, but Jake wasn't threatened by Maron's presence.

“If you're thinking that I will apologize to Rebecca then you should think again, Maron. There's nothing to apologize for. Tell her to move on just like I have," he said with a smile on his face.

Georgina pouted her lips and raised her brow in surprise. She was beginning to feel uncomfortable.

“If I were you, Jake, I would be very careful," Maron said in a cold tone that screams danger. He cast a dismissive glare, but Jake showed less concern about his threatening face.

“Return to Rebecca and do the right thing or I will have to make you. Trust me, you don't want that. Do not say you were not warned."

Jake scoffed and rolled his eyes.

"There won't be any need for that, Maron. I will come for you when the time is right,” he stated confidently, and Georgina furrowed her brow.

She was dumbfounded. She stared at Jake in surprise, wondering what had come over him, and why he felt so confident.

Maron raised his brow in surprise at Jake's sudden full-fledged confidence. He exchanged glances with his bouncers who laughed mockingly at Jake.

“Well, thank you very much, Jake. I shall wait for your arrival. Do not keep me waiting though. As you know, I can be very impatient.”

Jake watched as Maron and his bouncers walked away leaving him alone with Georgina.

He sighed deeply and turned to walk away, but Georgina held his hand and pulled him back.

“What was that about?” She asked curiously, and Jake rolled his eyes.

"Do I need to remind you that it's Maron you were talking to? He is very powerful. I know that I've hurt you lately, but I don't want you to get into trouble with Maron."

“You should leave Burutan immediately. Maron will come for you for daring to challenge him. Leave right away,” she said and handed him a credit card.

“There's about two million dollars in this card. You can start up something far from here. Save your life,” she said, but Jake scoffed and rolled his eyes.

“Why are you pretending to care? Well, thanks for your concern but I don't need your little money. For your information, I can handle Maron. You should focus on your wedding up ahead."

As he turned to walk away, Georgina rushed ahead of him and intercepted him.

"What's wrong with you, Jake? Come on, you're nobody. Maron will crush you without breaking a sweat," She said, and Jake scoffed.

"Well, isn't that what you wanted? Why pretend to be concerned anyway?”

"What is it exactly you want, Georgina?” He asked, his voice calm and barely above a whisper.

She fidgeted her fingers, avoiding eye contact with him.

“I'm sorry, Jake. Truth is, I don't love Maron as much as I love you. I wish there was a better way to go about it. Please, forgive me."

Jake sighed and wrapped his arms together. “And you're telling me this now? Do I need to remind you that we're divorced? You should learn to love Maron because it's the only option you've got.”

“If you don't mind, I have places to be. Have a nice day,” he said to her, but as he tried to walk away, she rested her head on his chest and wrapped her hands around his waist.

She looked him in the eyes, her face so close to his that she could feel his breath all over her face.

“Jake, I… I… um, I'm sorry.” She whispered in a low voice, and Jake sighed with his eyes closed.

He exhaled deeply and before he opened his eyes, Georgina's lips were already on his. She took his lips into hers and began to kiss him passionately.

Georgina was a good kisser, and Jake couldn't help but respond to the kiss. Just as things were about to get intense, Jake pulled back and pushed her backward. He darted his eyes around nervously.

“What just happened? Did you just try to seduce me?” He asked curiously, but she didn't utter a word.

“We're divorced, Georgina. Why will you kiss me? You're about to marry Maron for God's sake. How long before you divorce him or kiss another dude?”

He wore a disappointing look on his face as he stared at her.

“I mean what has come over you, Georgina? You've become a cheap, gold-digging slut. I pity Maron, for he has no idea of what he is getting into.”

Georgina pouted slowly and buried her face to the ground. A look of shame washed over her features, and she gasped softly.

Tears gathered in her eyes as a rush of regret engulfed her. “It's not what you think, Jake. I can explain." She said in a sobbing voice but Jake wasn't moved.

He rolled his eyes disappointedly and sighed, a clear sign of his disgust.

“It's only a matter of time before you turn on Maron. When the time comes, I will be there.” He walked away, leaving her standing with her gaze fixated on his back.

She collapsed on the ground and broke into hot tears. Her location was hidden, so no one could notice her. She seized the opportunity to let loose her tears and broke down into a heavy downpour.

Jake was in a cab, driving to the airport when his phone rang. He stared at the phone, and it was a call from Usman. He let out a low smile and picked up the call abruptly.

“Hello, Uncle Usman," he greeted with a pleasant voice.

“Hey, son. So how did it go? You've settled things with your Ex-wife?”

Jake scoffed and let out a deep sigh.

"It's complicated,” he stated.

“You won't believe what I just found out, Uncle Usman. The C&C Global Company Ltd belongs to my father. I should have known, Uncle. I have been oppressed by people who're supposed to answer to me, but it all ends now.”

Usman mumbled over the phone, and a short silence fell in.

"So what are you planning to do, son?" Usman asked, breaking the awkward silence and Jake chuckled.

“Don't worry Uncle, it's payback time. Everybody who played a role in my torture is going to get a share of their own medicine. Funny enough, I know where to begin. Bye for now, Uncle, I will see you soon” Jake said and ended the call immediately.
