Chapter 15

“Cheat? Why are they calling me a cheater?” Cassie asked herself like she didn't know how much of a terrible person she was.

She shifted uncomfortably in her chair, her eyes darting around the room as everyone looked at her with angry faces. The tension was completely suffocating, and the cold glares of the remaining members of that company only deepened how uncomfortable she was.

“You are some low life cheater!”

Cassie crossed her arms defensively and asked, “Why is everyone so angry? Why are you calling me a cheat?”

Marcus furiously stepped forward with his expression of pure irritation. “You really don’t understand, do you, Cassie? We know everything. Everything you did to Bruce.”

“Oh shit” Cassie stiffened, her face was pale. “What did I do to Bruce?”

“Don't even try to pretend cos you suck at pretending!”

“What the hell are you talking about? Are you gonna tell me or you'd keep yelling and insulting me.”

Marcus angrily slammed his hand on the table, making Cassie flinch. “Don’t play dumb! You and your father framed Bruce and sent him to jail. You cheated him, manipulated him, and used him like he was nothing.”

“What? You can't be serious,” Cassie straightened up as she tried to look like she didn't know what they were talking about. Her voice rose when she said “That’s not true! Bruce stole my father's money, and you have no proof otherwise.”

“Shut the fuck up!” Marcus roared, his voice echoing in the room. “We’re done listening to your stupid lies. We’ve heard enough. We know the truth, Cassie.”

Cassie’s jaw tightened as she glared at him, she knew he was angry but she couldn't let him keep talking to her like that. “Watch how you talk to me Marcus. I am still your boss, and you will show me respect.”

“Boss?” Marcus smirked coldly. “You’re not our boss anymore. None of us are staying with you anymore. We’re resigning, effective immediately.”

“Damn!” The words hit Cassie like a punch to the gut. “You can’t resign now, you can't do that,” she said, her voice faltering. “You all need me. This company needs me.”

One of the other members, a woman in her early thirties, stood up. “No, Cassie. The company needed Bruce. He was the backbone of this Goddamned company. Without him, things have been falling apart. And now that we know what you did to him, none of us can trust you. We might all wake up one day and discover that you have double-crossed us too.”

Cassie’s arrogance flared. “Double-cross you? Are you serious? I’ve done nothing but try to keep this company moving while you all sat back and did nothing.”

“We did nothing?” We are the ones who kept doing the construction, following Bruce to work in the dirt, mud and even in the rain while you took all the money and bought fancy clothes for yourself.”

“You're a terrible person Cassie.” Another said.

“I have put a lot of money in this company.” Cassie said powerfully with veins stretching from her neck.

“You can lie to yourself all you want, but we know the truth. This company has been failing ever since Bruce left. You might be able to fool yourself into thinking you can fix things, but we’re not sticking around to find out.”

Cassie rose from her chair, at this point, she was very desperate but she tried to sound firm. “Listen, we can fix this. We can fight together and make the company stand again. We can bring it back.”

“Fight together my foot!” Marcus shook his head, and his tone sounded like a final conclusion. “No, we can't fight together. Not with you leading us. You and your father destroyed the very foundation of this company, and it will never recover.”

One by one, the members of the company began to stand, gathering their belongings and heading for the door. Cassie’s heart sank as she realized she was losing every single thing in her life while everything kept getting better for Bruce who she took for granted.

She didn't want the remaining members of the company to leave so she called out, “Wait,” her voice was breaking. “Please. Don’t do this. Don’t leave.”

But no one even cared to look back. The last sound she heard was the soft click of the door as it closed behind them.

“Fuck!” Cassie stood frozen for a moment, staring at the empty room. Slowly, her knees buckled, and she fell to the floor. “What the hell is happening? Everything is falling apart!” Tears streamed down her face as sobs wracked her body. She had always thought she was invincible, that she could control everything and everyone, manipulate and use anyone as she liked. But now, she was alone, the weight of her actions were already crushing her in ways she didn't expect. And for the first time, she truly understood what it meant to lose.

“I'm screwed for real!”
