One of them swallowed hard, shook his head to dispel his fears, straightening himself, he bent his head and sneered at the shop owner,
“Hah! Jokes on you, he cannot appear from thin air to rescue you! So you're at our mercy”
He kicked harshly at the man who cowered over, clutching at his stomach. Laughing arrogantly, another soldier crunched his boot on the poor man's heel and said loudly,
“Seeing as you've dared to threaten us, I can think of several ways to silence you” he lowered himself and whispered loudly as he winked and continued,
"Silence you forever, and then no one, not even the Mayor, would ever find out what happened to you. Silence you, alongside your fellow merchants!"
The sickening soldier boasted, hitting his chest with his gun as his eyes shone at the thought.
On the other hand, the merchants and the others who had heard the threats were filled with fear, some of them had peed on themselves, some shivering to their bones as they heard him.
Sensing and smelling their fears, the soldiers laughed and high-fived themselves in pleasure, smiling broadly.
“ Who are you silencing?”
Suddenly, a cold voice sounded behind them.
Their smiles immediately disappeared, with their eyes bulging as they looked in the direction of the sound and watched as Richard approached them, walking with wide strides and his gaze as cold as ice.
The soldier's throats became parched instantly as they rapidly blinked, trying to convince themselves he was nothing but a ghost.
Seeing as he wasn't a ghost but the real feared and revered Mayor, all fifteen of them dropped to their knees, sweats on their foreheads and armpits, while on their knees, they shivered and tried groveling,
“M-mayor Richard, it's you…”,
"Have mercy Mayor, we were just messing around”
"Mayor, please have mercy. We'll disappear"
Richard stood before them, his presence suffocating.
" Is your president aware of this messing around as you call it?" Squatting to get to their level, he smiled darkly as he looked at them with cold eyes,
“Does this action of yours have your president’s approval and stamp?”
The soldiers’ eyes darted nervously. One by one, they lowered their heads, unable to meet his piercing gaze.
Their voices trembled as they denied any official orders.
“No, Mayor, we were acting on our own,” they admitted, each word laced with fear. “We didn't mean to cause any trouble. If we’re found out, we’re dead!”
“Is that so?”
Richard's smirk grew darker as he took in their responses.
For a moment, the entire place went as silent as a graveyard, all of them looking at Richard
Even Vivienne was a little tense, looking and listening intently to see what Richard had in store.
"Well," Richard said, clapping his hands, straightening himself, his tone casual but laced with menace. "I believe you."
He could see right through their lies. These soldiers were sent to scout the area for an attack, testing the waters to see if Vancovira was weak and vulnerable.
But now this was out of his duty to interfere with.
The soldiers visibly relaxed for a brief moment, but their relief was short-lived.
“However,” Richard continued, his voice growing colder, "I think we can all agree that there's a price to pay for trespassing. I'll be lenient on you guys for today. With that said, your punishment is simple. Break a leg, and I do not mean that literally. “
The soldiers felt a wave of relief wash over them, grateful their lives were spared. But the dread of the punishment still clung to them as bile rose in their throats, their bodies trembling in fear.
The crowd around them shifted nervously, some pulling back, unable to bear the impending sight, while others watched with morbid curiosity, their eyes wide with anticipation.
“Are they really going to break their legs?” one man asked the woman beside him, his voice tense.
She shrugged nonchalantly. “They have to. They won’t leave here alive otherwise.”
“Don’t you know? Mayor Richard doesn’t make empty threats. He doesn’t repeat himself,” she added, her tone matter-of-fact.
Before the words had even settled in the air, the crowd was filled with the gut-wrenching sound of cracking bones. Screams echoed through the open air, the sickening crunch of bone reverberating in everyone’s ears.
“Arrghhhh!”
The soldiers' cries of pain were raw and desperate, as their legs were snapped beyond recognition, twisted and mangled in grotesque angles.
The sounds of their agony filled the air, and the sight of their unnatural, limp limbs made many turn away in horror.
All fifteen soldiers, now crippled, struggled to stand on one leg, their faces pale with pain as they looked at Richard, waiting for the next command.
Richard strode over to the leader, cupping his chin and lifting his head to meet his gaze.
“If you ever set foot in this region again,” he said slowly, “you’ll leave in a body bag. You got me?”
His voice was cold as ice, sending a tremor through the soldiers, their knees buckling in fear.
“So long. You’re free to go.”
The soldiers, broken and defeated, nodded weakly, their bodies shaking as they limped away, knowing they had narrowly escaped a much worse fate.
At their departure, Richard turned back to the merchants, his expression softening slightly.
“You’re safe now.”
The residents of the place rushed over to Richard, thanking him profusely.
"Mayor Richard, we are deeply grateful for your help today!" one of the elders exclaimed, bowing so low it seemed he might touch his forehead to the ground.
Another man nodded in agreement, mirroring the same respectful gesture.
"We are unworthy of standing before you, yet you came to our aid without hesitation. We are forever in your debt," he added, his voice tinged with awe.
Richard offered a small smile.
“You're welcome, they won't be returning, at least not anytime soon. I have to be on my way now" He informed them, and the smiles that had lit up their faces faded almost immediately.
The residents exchanged nervous glances, the weight of the evening sinking in. After a brief pause, the head of the group spoke again, his voice respectful but filled with quiet concern."Mayor, I know I’m not in a position to ask for favors, but seeing as night has fallen and the journey ahead is long, we humbly request that you stay with us for the night and continue your journey tomorrow."A chorus of agreement followed, with the other residents nodding eagerly. They looked at Richard with hopeful eyes, silently pleading for him to accept their hospitality."Yes, please stay the night.""We would be honored to host you, Mayor."They urged as Vivienne stood by watching silently with a smile that reached her eyes, but then she felt a slight pang in her heart, her eyebrows drawing together at the thought of the city not being protected by Richard any longer. She wondered how Dalton City could miss out on such a rare and influential gem.By mere commands from him, the feared soldiers o
Vivienne’s brows furrowed at his request, but she said nothing, only nodding in acknowledgment. As they journeyed down,Vivienne was dazed, staring speechless to see both sides of the streets lined with the residents of Vancovira waving flags and singing Richard's praises; some even had tears in their eyes as they bid them farewell. The procession continued with people still lining the streets until they got to the helipad that was to return them to the City; as they exited the vehicle, they could still hear the praises of the people trailing behind them while the ten disciples bowed in reverence to Richard.Vivienne looked dazedly around, her heart churning within as she followed Richard into the helicopter that was to return him to prison. Back in Dalton City, Cassandra and Harold were back in their home, wine glasses in hands as they toasted and celebrated Richard's downfall as well as the new horizon of Andrew taking over the mayoral position,“Cheers to a new dispensation, one w
As they rushed to follow her orders, Vivienne made calls to ensure the room was well-ventilated, painted, and cleaned. Occasionally, she glanced at Richard, who had his head held back while he meditated to himself. He was unfazed by the activities going on around him while he waited patiently to be led to whatever cell was made available to him. After it was all prepared, Vivienne gingerly escorted Richard to the cell, making sure to inform him as they went about her thoughts,“Mayor Richard, I know this place isn't befitting for someone of your status, and I have tried to make it as habitable as possible. I hope that this place gives you the comfort and peace that you seek, you're a guest and not a prisoner, hence why I have set it to a standard of comfort to help ease your stay here”Richard nodded, saying nothing as they went to the room, and as they walked the inmates who saw and recognized Richard were startled, as they watched with widened eyes,“Are my eyes possibly deceiving
Oblivious to the planning against his life, Richard had awoken the next morning ready to enjoy his current peace and quiet, but that plan was far-fetched as some policemen had come on Vivienne's orders to escort him to a luxurious restaurant .When they got to their destination where Vivienne was waiting for him with a warm smile, Richard quirked his eyebrows and shook his head subtly.“Mayor Richard, I hope you're doing well this morning and that your living arrangement is to your liking?”In response, Richard shrugged his shoulders, just as one of the men pulled out a seat and he sat,“What's all this? And this fuss?" Richard questioned as he spread his arm to the array of food on the table, Vivienne's cheeks tinged a bit before she sat up to respond,“I just felt it right to treat you to a hearty meal” was her simple response as her gaze remained on Richard, who raised an eyebrow at her,“This is really unnecessary. The hospitality isn't needed" Pausing for a second, he sighed and
“Richard Day! You're under arrest for fraud, bribery, and corruption!” Inspector Finn’s words rang out, and Richard leaned back in his chair, unfazed. Slowly, he turned to face the officer. “Finn,” he drawled, “ To what do I owe this pleasure?”“Uhm… A case has been brought against you, and I’m simply here doing my duty,” Finn replied, a hint of nervousness in his voice.‘Is that so?’ Richard raised an eyebrow, and his gaze flicked briefly to his assistant, Benson, whose hand hovered over his waistband, ready to act. With a subtle shake of his head, Richard signaled him to stand down.Sighing, Richard looked around at the officers before focusing on Finn. “What crime did you say has been levied against me?" he asked, voice calm but edged with steel. Inspector Finn swallowed a little before he replied. “You've been accused of misappropriation of funds, bribery, corruption, and various other crimes" He started with a clearer voice, but his confidence wavered as he continued und
They arrived at the prison, and Inspector Finn led Richard inside, with Richard striding in and his hands cuffed. They were headed to Inspector Finn's office when loud siren noises filled the air, and officers straightened their postures as a fleet of six luxurious cars rode into the police compound. The cars came to a stop, with a well-dressed officer hurrying down to open the back door he had come down from,Inspector Finn watched with mouth agape as a woman with long flowing red hair and voluptuous curves came down, wearing high stiletto heels, the aura around her was that of power and authority. As he watched her approach, he shuffled on his feet and gulped, before he greeted her with all the false enthusiasm he could muster.“C-chief, this is a pleasant surprise. You didn't inform us you were coming in" He greeted, trying to smile despite the turmoils in his stomach, the police Chief raised her brows at him before replying snidely,“I didn't know I was to inform you of my itine
Finn shook his head vigorously, closing his eyes tight as he did, mumbling under his breath,“I-I w-was only following orders of the mayor. " Vivienne straightened herself, “You also follow my order! You don't go behind me and execute orders without my permission!”Richard remained impassive, looking at Finn kneeling in front of him. He understood what was going on, it was obvious Finn was just a mere messenger whose hands were tied. “It’s all right, Vivienne. I’ll be fine.” He turned to Vivienne and said calmly.Vivienne swallowed hard, scratching at her temple as she watched Richard. It was as clear as day that the mayor and his daughter were nothing but ambitious but stupid people who didn't mind bringing people down to get to their aim.On the surface, the city of Dalton appeared peaceful and prosperous, but beneath this facade were various dangerous factions engaged in a power struggle. Only Richard’s presence kept these forces from making bold moves against the city. Shou
But then, as she recalled the respectful glances the manager directed at them, understanding dawned on her. Of course—it had to be because of Andrew. He was a Morris, from one of the most prominent families in the capital. Andrew's family name alone must have been enough to completely change their treatment here.Realizing this, Cassie’s eyes sparkled with admiration. Her confusion melted into a profound pride. She looked at Andrew, her lips curling into a smile. “Andrew, I’m so proud of you! It’s all because of you! Only the Morris family can have such an influence!” Andrew gave a smug smile, shrugging as though it was nothing.“Well, being a Morris has its perks,” he replied with a wink. “Enjoy, this is only the beginning. This is nothing compared to all you stand to gain with our marriage and merger”Andrew boasted with a puffed-out chest, causing Harold and Cassie to exchange a glance and beamed widely at themselves. The same thought was running through both their minds: it ha
