Chasing After a Ghost

Christian, Yvonne, and Damian. All three of them are high profile individuals because of who their parents are. Christian is the son of Alexander Aster, the favorite to win the mayoral election.

Then there’s Yvonne Summers, daughter of the Academy’s Head. A prestigious school where all of the sons and daughters of wealthy individuals attend because of the quality of education.

Last, but definitely not the least, is Damian Silvers; son of the number one gaming company’s CEO. He’s also the world champion for most of their games which made his name that much more prominent

This is the reason why Christian can’t lay a hand on any of the two. They are just as important as him. They are valuable individuals who spreads his sphere of influence and, they benefit the same thing from him. They are like parasites feeding on each other. But that doesn’t mean that they get along perfectly – because they don’t.

“Hey, why did you stop me earlier?” Christian asked the two as soon as Haze and Gerald left.

To the public eye, they want to maintain the image that they’re always on good terms. This makes them even more unstoppable and, prevents anyone from scheming against them. The only one they ever showed this weakness to is Daemon but, this insect is already six feet below the ground.

Yvonne closed her laptop and took off her glasses as she gave a glance at the teen who asked the question “We need them Christian, you know that very well.”

“Need them? Since when did we NEED specific insects?” Christian asked. “Do you really think that they are assets we can’t dispose of? There are a lot of other thugs in the academy.”

“But none are as good as them.” Damian answered right away, eyes still glued to his console. “Let me just remind you that they’re already part of the Viper gang, the most notorious gang within our city. As a rippling effect, they have all the other thugs on the school by the collar. There’s no way we can find anyone else that’s going to be as effective as them."

“How hard is it even to get inside a gang? If that’s what you’re worried about we can just buy our way in or, better yet, we can buy those bastards themselves.” Christian said in reply.

“Things aren’t always as simple as one plus one.” Yvonne answered. “We need to protect our image. Those goons already have a bad reputation and, since they seem to plan on making it worse and worse, we’re just helping them out.”

Christian breathed a deep sight after this. His chance at killing both Haze and Gerald doesn’t exist anymore after all. That’s the cause for him to feel this down. “You know, you might seem like good guys but, you two are actually a lot more devilish than me."

“Oh come on Christian, we can’t take that crown from you.” Damian answered back as the air in the room became lighter once again.

The three of them do argue a lot but, at the end of the day, they just brush everything off since they can’t really harm one another. But that just makes their relationship a lot more fragile and dangerous because, as soon as that protection of theirs vanish… they won’t even think twice before betraying one another.

“Anyway, there shouldn’t be any problem with what we ordered those two.” Yvonne added. “Grant’s in their hideout so I’m guessing his in a calmer state now.”

“He better be. I don’t want to spend the whole night thinking whether or not he went to the police.” Christian said.

“And that’s why we sent the two.” Damian replied. “Relax. Everything will work out like it always does.”

“Yeah.” Christian sighed. “I guess you’re right.”

“Dammit!” Gerald said from the front seat of the car. “I swear I’m gonna get back at those silver spooned bastards one day.”

“Calm down, will you?” Haze answered as he stepped on the gas.

“How can I calm down when that lunatic pointed a knife at us?” Gerald asked.

“It’s not like this is the first time, right? Let’s just be thankful that he didn’t actually cut us.”

The care they’re using is Haze’s mustang. They used one instead of two because of the efficiency. Since they’re only going to one place and don’t have to corner anyone. Plus, this allows them to have a conversation on they way there. About the three richest and most influential students within the academy and, about Grant moreover.

“Did he answer yet?” Haze asked as Gerald’s phone is right beside his ear.

“No. He keeps ignoring the calls.” Gerald put down his phone. “Why isn’t he answering? It’s us for Christ’s sake.”

Everything would’ve been a lot easier if they know that Grant lost his phone. They don’t. The reason for this is that the ones assigned to follow Grant didn’t make this report. They chased after the teen as soon as he went on running and, this made them neglect taking the phone.

When they came back it already went missing and, they sure as hell aren’t going to report this because they know that there’s going to be a heavy punishment for them neglecting their task. But that will now have a snowballing effect that goes in favor of a man who came back from the dead.

“Do you think there’s a chance that something actually happened to him?” Gerald asked.

“I doubt it. He’s probably just clearing his mind or something. You know how heavy the recent events have been for him.” Haze answered, being the more logical of the two.

“Yeah well, he’s making our lives more difficult as well.” Gerald retorted.

“Let’s just get him back. We can think of everything else after that.”

“You think they’re gonna skin him alive or something?”

“I honestly don’t know anymore.” Haze breathed a deep sigh.

Just like Grant, the events have also weighed down on Haze as well. More than the guilt of murdering someone, there’s something heavier that’s haunting his mind. Something more personal in regards to the recent events. Though that information can come at a latter time. What’s important now is that, they finally arrived.

The building has an entrance gate that’s been taken down by their gang. This allows them to enter and park their car inside. Both the police and the other gangs don’t even bother going here and messing up with the territory of the Vipers because of how lethal the group can be.

“He should’ve heard the engine by now.” Haze said. “He should be calling us or texting.”

Both of them look at their phones for any signs of life. Nothing. There isn’t a call, much less a text from Grant. As if their entrance wasn’t the most noticeable thing in the dead of night and in a quiet place.

“Yvonne did say that he drunk so, maybe he’s sleeping somewhere near the boss’s den.” Haze said, making the most rational deduction possible. “As long as he doesn’t actually crash into the boss’s room, he’s gonna be okay.”

“Yeah let’s get going then.” Gerald said. “I want all of this to end as soon as possible.”

“I couldn’t agree more.”

The two of them finally made their way up the building. This is supposed to be a mansion but, the construction of it didn’t push through because of an untoward incident. That’s why the design is a bit grandiose. With twin spiraling stairs that lead to the left and right side of the second floor of the mansion. From here they can go up one more floor to reach the bedrooms. The place where they suspect that Grant would be in.

“GRANT!” His voice echoed across the building. “Stop fooling around and come down you punk! You’re getting the three of us in trouble!”

Gerald’s voice is loud enough to reach the top floor of the building so they did expect a response. But there’s nothing. There’s not a single sound nor any signs of movement as they beamed their flashlights towards the direction of the top floor.

“The fuckers dead asleep.” Gerald said in an annoyed tone.

“Let’s get this over with.” Haze said. “You check all the left rooms and I’ll go at the other side.”

“Right.” Gerald said as they split and continued with their task.

The design on the left and right side are the same. There are a couple of doors that lead to rooms within the building as well and, all of these are opened wide. There isn’t a single door that’s locked – even the boss’s quarters. Hence Gerald didn’t have a hard time opening one door after the other.

He scanned every room for any signs of life and, as he did he also made a loud shout as well. Saying “GRANT!” every time in hopes that the bastard would wake up from his voice. Little did he know that it would make an effect completely different from what he intended.

Gerald continued opening the doors and found that none on the second floor had what he needed. Haze is the same and already went to the third floor which, he intends to do as well. But then he heard movement.

The sound of someone running from the left side of the second floor suddenly came. He heard this loud and clear – turning and beaming his light to inspect. And, sure enough, there’s someone running opposite the direction of where he is.

“HEY! Stop!” He said as he ran after this person.

He needed to sprint with all his might because, Haze could be anywhere on the third floor already and he won’t be able to help in catching this person who’s definitely not Grant. That’s why Gerald’s focus went on this singular task. Tunneling his vision even more in that dark place.

Making him crash down a hole.
