Chapter 5 : The Gold Box

Terry rolled his eyes lazily at the question Steve threw at him.

"If I wasn't serious, I wouldn't have been chased by that crazy gang, Steve," he said resentfully as he chewed the chips in his mouth roughly.

Steve was lost in thought. He had no idea that Rosemary's family was still searching for their successor, who had disappeared after 25 years.

Steve sighed. It seemed he was interested in this conversation. He leaned in carefully so as not to nudge his newly healed leg.

"But where did you get the news?" Steve asked with a serious face. His arms were crossed in front of his chest. “ You’re not afraid that it's a hoax?"

Ben responded to the question in a calm tone. "I don't think that's possible. Because we got this information from a reliable source."

Steve raised his eyebrows, not understanding what the man with heterochromia eyes was saying. "Reliable sources?" He asked in a confused tone. "Who are you referring to?"

"From the gardener who works at the Griffin family," Terry added to Ben's words while answering Steve's question. "He can't be lying because he was sworn in by the head of Rosemary's family."

"Okay, let's say I believe what you two say. But do you know where the gold box is kept?"

Both men let out a rough sigh. Both Ben and Terry had depressed looks on their faces.

"That's the problem. The gardener hired by Rosemary's family had no idea where the gold box was kept. We lost a very important link." Terry said it in a depressed tone.

"If I tell you I know where the gold box is, will I be rewarded?"

Terry and Ben looked at each other. Both had shocked faces. But on the other hand, there was a twinkle of happiness and hope on their faces. "Do you know where the box is?"

"Of course," Steve replied in a reassuring voice. "As a former son-in-law in the Griffin family, I know everything. From the location of the box you're looking for to the rottenness of the company they run," Steve added in a cocky tone.

"Wow, that's cool," Ben said admiringly with a faint smile of amazement. "I guess you have a very high position in the family to know everything."

Steve's confidence was instantly shattered by Ben's words. The man in shabby clothes clenched his fists tightly with deep emotion on his face.

"On the contrary, I'm considered a disgrace by that family because I have neither power nor money," Steve said with a hurt face. For some reason, the man spoke openly about his problems to a stranger. What was wrong with him?

Terry immediately patted Steve's back, encouraging the man. "Sorry to hear that fact," he sympathized.

"No problem. After all, I'm not part of their family anymore." Steve flashed a faint smile until the dimples on both cheeks were visible. "So, like I said, what will I get if I tell you the information I have?"

"You'll be rewarded by Rosemary's family." Ben paused to take a deep breath. "Because even the smallest clue would mean the world to Rosemary's family."

Steve nodded his head as if he understood what his interlocutor was saying. His hand stroked his chin in a thinking pose. Many ideas were running through his head at the moment.

"Can I know what the reward offered is?" asked Steve in a curious tone. "Because I will consider telling you if I get the appropriate reward,"

Without saying much, Terry immediately got up from his seat and went towards one of the cabinets full of food found on the left side of the room. His hand stretched out to take something from there.

Steve watched Terry's back from behind with a puzzled look. "What is Terry looking for? Why aren't you answering my questions?"

"He's looking for a list of rewards that will be given to the person who manages to find a clue about the heir to Rosemary's family," Ben said casually.

"Hm? Are the rewards different?" asked Steve, frowning, not understanding what Ben was talking about.

"Yes, the rewards different according to the accuracy of the information obtained," Terry interrupted them. Ben stepped toward the chair and handed Steve a brown folder.

"Here, read what's inside carefully," Terry ordered in a flat tone. The man didn't have much of a meaningful expression on his face. "If there's anything you don't understand, you can ask me."

Steve accepted the folder and opened it slowly. His eyes carefully read every line of writing written there.

His eyes rounded when he saw the amount written on the paper. "Woah, the reward they gave me was really great," Steve said in awe.

The amount written on the folder was fantastic. 50–100% accuracy with different amounts. What surprised Steve the most was that if the accuracy of the information he got was 100% correct, then he would get 1 million dollars.

Seeing Steve, who looked tempted by the nominal written on the paper, made Ben pull the corners of his lips up, forming a wide smile. "So how is it? Do you want to work with us?"

"Yes, I agree to work with you guys."

Ben smiled as he had just found the person who would lighten his work.

He got up and picked up one of the laptops on the table, pressing a special password before logging into the web.

"Well, we're going to get to work now," Ben said as he started pressing the keyboard keys rapidly, creating a rhythmic sound that sounded catchy to the ears. "Can you tell me where the Griffin family's gold box is?"

"Of course." Steve smiled slightly as he answered Ben's question. "But it's okay if it's a little off, right?"

"You mean?" Ben stopped typing and turned to Steve with a puzzled look on his face.

"Yeah, I mean, I don't know where the exact location is." Steve scratched the back of his head, which didn't itch, with an awkward smile etched on his lips. "Because I've only ever known about it once, as told by my ex-wife. And again, I'm afraid of the gold box being moved from there," Steve continued.

Ben already had a sour face. His lips were pouting with annoyance. His eyebrows were knit together, and his arms were crossed over his chest. "You said you knew where it was, but now you're saying you didn't know. Which word am I supposed to believe?"

Steve looked panicked as he heard Ben's voice suddenly rise. "Uh, that's not it. I mean— "

"Then you don't know. You just say you don't know. Don't give me false hope. You know, people like you are sickening," Ben said in a scathing tone.

Steve turned his face the other way, feeling hurt as his words continued to be interrupted by Ben. The man with the heterochromian eyes didn't give him permission to say even a word.

The atmosphere between the three became awkward and cold. The piercing air from the cold temperature worsened the situation. Terry sighed as he knew the two men were doing the silent treatment.

"But I know the approximate place, right?" Terry asked to break the silence between the three.

"As for the approximate location, I know. But the exact spot, I don't know," Steve explained. Terry smiled slightly as he still found an opening for them to find the golden box.

"That's enough for both of us," said Terry. "So, where is the approximate place where they kept the gold box?"

"In the back garden area, near the fountain," Steve said hesitantly.

"Do you hear it, Ben? Do your job now," Terry ordered.

Lazily, Ben refocused on his laptop to hack into the CCTV system in the area. His hands danced nimbly over the keyboard until the letters and numbers were moving in rapid succession. Steve stared in amazement at Ben, who looked calm as if he were used to handling this.

It didn't take long before a loud "Ding" sound rang through the air, distracting Steve and Terry. Both of them approached Ben's laptop with a curious look.

"Did you manage to hack into their system?" Terry asked.

"Sure," Ben replied briefly. He showed the screen of his laptop, which showed the place Steve had mentioned earlier.

"Wow, you're doing great." Steve praised Ben's action in penetrating the Griffin family's defenses with ease.

"Of course, it was easy for me," Ben replied proudly. Terry rolled his eyes lazily at his brother's arrogance.

"So, you two are ready to infiltrate the Griffin family area?"

However, Steve gave no response. The man remained silent as he hugged the folder he was reading."Terry, how is this? Why is he like this?"Terry let out a long sigh as he took out a cigarette from his box. He immediately lit the tobacco-based object and took a slow drag. "I think the contents of that folder are more dangerous than we thought, Ben.""What do you mean?" asked Ben with an uncomprehending look.
