Ethan held onto his old phone, which still displayed a message about receiving a substantial amount of money. "Where's an ATM around here? I've been walking and still can't find it. Is it difficult to find an ATM on this street?" Ethan muttered to himself. His brow furrowed as he reexamined each building in the corner of the city where he was staying.
However, his wanderings had now become meaningless. Everything was ruined due to his excessive trust in everything, including the man who had clearly led him astray. "Enough of those thoughts, Ethan! Everything has happened, and I can't redo it to make it right again."
Ethan closed his eyes for a while, attempting to reconcile with and continually make peace with all the demands for justice. "Calm down, Ethan. Not everything you want will go as you wish. Everything unfolds according to God's plan. You should always remember that God's plan is the best plan."
Ethan reassured himself. He didn't want his thoughts to drift away again. Although his heart felt heavy whenever he thought about his current fate, the pain persisted. The pain felt like a deep wound, but no one was willing to see it, let alone empathize with him. Seeing his wound, everyone seemed to lack the intention to do so.
"That's enough! The discussion about that wound is over. I shouldn't think about it anymore. Everything is clear enough, and it doesn't need further clarification. Enough."
Ethan didn't want to reopen and deepen the wound in his heart. Because when his memories recalled it all, he felt like he was cutting his own hand. Everything had passed, regardless of regrets and tears, they wouldn't change anything.
He had received that warning letter. And all of it happened because of the person he trusted deeply, someone he considered like a brother. But what else could he do? Sometimes reality doesn't align with one's emotions. Conflicts can arise that humans can't control.
"Anyway, it's called the heart; sometimes it can change over time. Ethan doesn't regret getting to know people like his boss and his friend, Ricard.
He's just annoyed and starting to resent it. Resenting himself for trusting them all without considering the risks that would come in the future.
You could say back then Ethan was naively assuming that everyone around him must be good, when in reality, it wasn't like that.
Ethan's footsteps continued to search for an ATM machine he hoped to find soon.
However, after walking for quite a while with thoughts full of regret about his behavior, the ATM machine he was looking for still hadn't been found.
Ethan wiped the sweat streaming down his face.
His head still felt dizzy, though not as painful as before he took that pill. The scorching sun was still making Ethan feel wobbly.
Nevertheless, Ethan kept trying to be strong despite his heart feeling the opposite.
"Maybe I can ask the security guard in the housing complex. He must know all the details about this area."
Ethan sharpened his gaze as he spotted a security guard stationed up ahead, not too far from where he was standing.
With forced steps, Ethan approached the security guard.
As if fully understanding the pain and the desire to collapse, the security guard immediately extended his help to Ethan. He held onto both of Ethan's arms to prevent him from falling to the ground.
"Hey, come on, Sir. Sit down here for a while. You don't look well right now."
The security guard then led Ethan to rest on the porch of his guard post.
"Thank you, Sir."
Ethan expressed his gratitude to the security guard. He felt thankful that there were still kind people who cared about him.
"Well, then, Sir, just rest here for a while. No need to go anywhere. I'm going back to my post. I'm worried people in this complex will see me not working."
Ethan gazed intently at the security guard. Before the guard could take another step, Ethan hastily rose from his seat and quickly intercepted him.
"Wait, sir! I have something to ask you."
Ethan hurriedly got up from his seat, stopping the guard in his tracks.
"You want to ask something? Sure, sir. Go ahead. What do you want to ask me?" the security guard inquired, looking directly at the man before him.
After spending a few minutes on the guard post's terrace, Ethan's headache had subsided. At least, it wasn't as intense and painful as before.
Ethan straightened his posture.
"Where's the nearest ATM, sir? I've been walking from the supermarket to this area, but I still can't find the ATM. Maybe you know where it is."
The security guard fell silent for a moment, as if contemplating where the nearest ATM might be located in the vicinity.
"Oh, right! I remember now. There's an ATM nearby. Just go straight from here. Then, when you reach a turn, take that turn. You'll find the ATM at the end of the road. It's close to the car dealership area. Not far from here."
The security guard, who had just recalled the location of the sought-after ATM, proceeded to point Ethan in the right direction.
Once Ethan understood and grasped the directions, he immediately thanked the guard.
With quick steps, Ethan headed towards the ATM he had been searching for. He continued walking straight as per the guard's instructions. He eventually made the turn, and true to the guard's words, shortly after entering the alley, he spotted the ATM positioned next to the car dealership, just as the guard had described.
"Thank God. Hopefully, this is like a windfall."
Ethan whispered a more heartfelt wish. He hoped that he would indeed receive the money as stated in the text message on his phone.
"In the name of God."
Ethan silently recited his prayer as his foot crossed the threshold of the ATM.
The man then reached into his pants pocket, took out his wallet, and quickly retrieved his ATM debit card.
"I hope this is real and not a scam or just wishful thinking."
Ethan muttered the prayer he said just before he inserted the debit card into the ATM machine.
The man followed the instructions given by the ATM machine, going through each step of the process until the moment came to check his current account balance.
Thunk! Ethan's emotions began to swirl. He feared that it might all be mere illusions rather than reality.
"In the name of God!" Ethan pressed the final button before his ATM balance appeared on the screen, covering one eye with his hand.
After he felt he had pressed the button, Ethan was suddenly struck silent. His gaze was fixed on the screen in front of him.
"Is this just a dream?"Part 07Without hesitation, Ethan, alone at the ATM, slapped his own cheek. He blinked several times, trying to convince himself that what he saw was real, not a fantasy. "Ouch!" Ethan winced as he felt a twinge of pain in his cheek. "Is this really happening?! Did I just get 100 million?! Did I become wealthy without any hard work?!" Ethan cheered in delight. Naturally, without much further thought, Ethan immediately withdrew an amount of money to pay the landlady who had tossed his belongings out. Before long, a vibration began in the man's pants pocket. With a furrowed brow, Ethan quickly retrieved his vibrating, shabby cellphone. "The system has been activated! Whoever has made an agreement with the system, when that person is able to complete missions to help those around them, the system will automatically provide 100 million as a reward for each mission." Suddenly, Ethan's old, beaten-up cellphone rang uncontrollably. He tried various ways to silence it, but the phone
Ethan carried his backpack with both hands while holding another large messenger bag. The bag was filled with his clothes. If it weren't for being forced out of his boarding house by the landlady, he wouldn't have realized he had so many clothes. This time, there was no longer sadness on Ethan's face. The thought of being able to confidently pay off his rent to the disrespectful landlady brought a unique sense of happiness to Ethan."Thank you, God. I believe all of this is also fate's intervention. Somehow this whole system emerged, and I feel like I'm a character in a fantasy novel. One thing's for sure, I'm incredibly grateful."Ethan closed his eyes for quite a while, letting that positive energy continue to enter and influence him."It's true what people say, that gratitude only appears after a blessing arrives. If I hadn't been grateful and calm earlier, maybe a blessing like this wouldn't have been given by God. It might have been given to someone else instead."Ethan murmured
Part 9During the journey, Ethan kept reciting prayers he could read for his mother's safety.Ethan hoped for another chance to meet his mother. He longed to embrace her, care for her, and make her happy once again. He felt he hadn't fully made his mother happy yet."Here, sir!"Ethan then handed some bills to the motorcycle taxi driver. The driver seemed about to protest the extra money, but Ethan quickly signaled that he meant to give more.Ethan then hurried into the terminal and purchased his ticket. As predicted by Ethan's timetable, the train that would take him back to his hometown arrived shortly.Just like the others, Ethan also entered the train and took a standing position. He refrained from sitting since he noticed many elderly individuals who seemed to need the seats more. Thus, Ethan decided to stand. He didn't want those who needed the space more than him to end up standing."Well, what can I do. I'm fed up with that company. How can they accuse me of ruining their proj
"There's no way I lost my phone on the train." Ethan kept searching, even turning over the pillows and mattress in his room.Since his arrival in his hometown, and learning of his Mother's passing, Ethan hadn't had a chance to check his phone. He had been busy with the funeral arrangements and mourning his late Mother for several hours. And now, Ethan finally needed his device. There was a sense of anxiety weighing on him, even though he still had cash savings for living in the village. Regardless, the money in his phone account was more substantial."Where is my phone?" Ethan left the room.He immediately headed to the kitchen, living room, and even his late Mother's bedroom. Ethan tirelessly searched every corner of the house. He even emptied the contents of his backpack."I could be in trouble if that phone is lost," Ethan muttered.Tired of searching and wanting to clear his head, Ethan returned to his room. He sat on the edge of the bed with his hands covering his face. Perhaps d
"Sir? All passengers have disembarked, Sir. Please go ahead."Ethan, who had unknowingly fallen into a deep sleep since he boarded the bus that brought him back to the city, didn't even realize that he had arrived at the capital, the place where he would try his luck again.Ethan then got off the bus, being the only remaining passenger, carrying his backpack that was still faithfully on his back.A rather long sigh came out of Ethan's mouth. It wasn't anything, it's just that Ethan felt heavy-hearted at that time.He had lost his parents, and only his younger sister Amel remained as his family. However, due to Amel's ongoing education in the village, she refused Ethan's offer to join him in the city.Whether he liked it or not, Ethan was forced to leave Amel alone in the village. Previously, he had also paid a neighbor he trusted to look after his sister."In the name of Mr. Ethan?" asked a taxi driver, breaking Ethan's reverie. He then opened his phone, sure enough, the Gojek (ride-h
"Are you just going to stay quiet? Don't you have any job to be proud of that you're standing like a mute in front of me?" Martin asked, throwing a disdainful look towards Ethan. The sudden situation left Ethan unsure of what action to take. Besides, he had never spoken intensely with his boss before; their interactions only occurred in group settings.Ethan also didn't understand why Citra suddenly pulled him into that woman's problem. What for? Citra could be alone with that arrogant man.As far as Ethan knew, Citra had always been indifferent towards everyone, including men who approached her. Women like Citra were typically focused solely on their careers, never considering a relationship that may or may not benefit them.Realizing that she hadn't briefed Ethan, Citra clicked her tongue inwardly; her impulsive act had dragged someone she hadn't even interacted with before into this. However, there was no undoing it now. Whether she liked it or not, she had to make use of this man'
"You promised to buy me that expensive bag?" Milena asked sweetly, clinging to her boyfriend's arm. Hearing this, Richard smiled widely, nodding to indicate he would fulfill the woman's request."Of course, honey. I'll give you anything you want. But let me work first, okay? My boss is coming. So I need to go to the office for at least a little while," Richard said, making Milena look delighted. She then waved at the man, walking towards the luxury car Richard had just bought for her.Richard lowered his gaze, glancing at the watch on his left wrist. "Damn! I forgot about the time. Mrs. Citra has probably already arrived at the office. I need to hurry and meet her," he muttered, berating his negligence.Just as Richard was about to head back to the office across the street from the cafe, someone ran toward him in a rush."Sir! Sir!" the man cried, clearly out of breath.Seeing the young man's behavior, Richard immediately furrowed his brow, knitting his eyebrows to show his puzzle
"Thank you, Aldo. Even though we won't be neighbors anymore. I'm glad I could meet a good person like you," said Ethan as he got off the motorcycle of a man named Aldo.Ethan really felt stuck before, he didn't know what to do or where to go. Until Ethan's memory brought him to the man who used to be his neighbor when he was still renting in the same housing complex as Aldo."Take it easy, Ethan. But, by the way. Does this mean you'll start living in this apartment? Wow, that's really something, Ethan. Now, you seem to be very successful," Aldo praised, looking towards the apartment gate which from the outside alone looked how luxurious the place was.One thing was certain, the apartment Ethan was renting now was much better than the housing complex Aldo lived in. So it's no wonder, just looking at the apartment made Aldo feel so amazed."Not really, Aldo. This apartment is the cheapest one and fits my budget. The room isn't big either, just right for living alone like me," said Ethan
