Chapter 002

The next morning, Xavier woke up to find that he had fallen asleep on a chair. His neck ached and as he stretched, he searched for any sign that would tell him his wife had returned.

He had waited for her in the living room throughout the day and until night but unfortunately, she hadn't returned even with all the missed calls he had given her.

"Where could she have gone? What did I say that kept her out this long?" Xavier sighed.

With no other choice left, Xavier set out for her parents' lavish estate, hoping for answers.

As Xavier took a cab to Kelanie's parents' estate with the last cash he had at hand, his mind raced with possibilities.

What could have prompted Kelanie's sudden departure for this long? Was it something he said or did? Or perhaps something entirely unrelated to him? Or maybe she is just so fed up with him that she doesn't want to sleep under the same roof as him?

Arriving at the grand gates, Xavier hesitated for a moment before pushing the button at the side.

After what seemed like an eternity, the gates slowly creaked open, allowing Xavier to walk through.

"Thank you." Xavier greeted the security man who, in return, nodded back nonchalantly.

Finally reaching the imposing front doors, Xavier took a deep breath before ringing the doorbell. Minutes passed before the door swung open, revealing a butler.

The butler, with a stern expression, regarded Xavier with a hint of recognition before ushering him inside the grand foyer. The opulence of the mansion felt suffocating to Xavier, who couldn't shake off the feeling of being an unwelcome guest.

Finally, Xavier reached the living room where Kelanie's parents sat in elegant armchairs, their expressions irritable.

"Who let this poor bastard in?!" Mr Jenkins, Kelanie's father, shouted when his eyes met with Xavier's.

"Xavier, what are you doing here?" Mr Jenkins inquired further, his voice measured as he stood up and walks towards Xavier.

"Whatever it is, I hope it finally ends in a divorce this time." Mrs Jenkins chimed in, eyeing Xavier with resentment.

Xavier hesitated, unsure of how to articulate his concerns. "I...I'm looking for Kelanie," Xavier stammered, unable to meet Mr Jenkins' piercing gaze. "She left the house and she hasn't come home since then, I'm worried."

"I'm not surprised she went to that length. I and my husband have warned her. We told her to divorce you the moment you lost your company but no! She chose to stay with a man who's too poor to afford decent clothes!" Mrs Jenkins retorted.

"First, he refuses to divorce her, even after we offered him money, and now he's lost her. What? Did you come here to borrow money for a private investigator?" Mr Jenkins sneered.

"I love Kelanie, I just want to make sure she's safe," Xavier replied, gaining a bit of confidence, "I don't need your money to find my wife," he added, finally looking Mr Jenkins in the eyes.

"You little runt!" Mr Jenkins, fueled with anger, slaps Xavier hard across his face, almost throwing Xavier to the floor and his wife gets up to support his action.

Mr Jenkins glared at Xavier, pure hatred, seething from his meer glance, "I told you never to come into this house without intentions of divorcing my daughter. You not only disobeyed me but also insulted me in my home? What gave you the audacity?!"

Xavier's heart sank even further at the insults thrown his way. More than the slap, what hurt him was the rift between him, his wife, and his in-laws the moment his business collapsed.

"I only came here to ask about my wife, sir. I didn't mean to-"

"And who told you she'd be here you worthless piece of trash?!" Mr Jenkins snarled.

"I knew it was a bad idea to let Kelanie pick a man for herself. For almost three years! Three years! We cut our daughter off because of you!" Mrs Jenkins shoved Xavier back, "Find our daughter and divorce her! We might even pay you handsomely for it."

Xavier stood there, his heart heavy with the weight of his in-laws' scorn. Despite their disdain, his determination to find Kelanie remained unwavering. "I will find her," he said firmly, "and when I do, I'll make sure she's safe, with or without your approval we will remain married."

"Why you little!" Mr Jenkins charged at Xavier.

"Dad, what's going on? We heard voices." Kelanie's voice interrupted as she walked down the stairs with another man.

Xavier was shocked, to say the least.

"Kelanie! I thought I told you to stay in your room!" Mr Jenkins exclaimed, wide-eyed.

"In your room?" Xavier mouthed as if just hearing a foreign language.

"I've been searching for you, calling your phone, and even asking my in-laws about you and here you've been! In your room?!" Xavier yelled, losing his temper.

"Your in-laws? Isn't that title farfetched at this point?" the man next to Kelanie voiced, about to walk further down the stairs but Kelanie blocked him from doing so with her hand in front of him.

"Kelanie. Who is that man?" Xavier asked, the rage, vivid in his eyes.

"It appears to me that you have no respect, Xavier. How dare you raise your voice here like you have any form of authority? Who are you? A mare nobody! Get out of my house now!" Mr Jenkins ordered but it was almost as if Xavier had gone deaf.

As Xavier stared at his wife, he realized that not only had she been avoiding him, but she had also been keeping company with another man.

"Kelanie, I'm going to ask you this question one last time." Xavier's stare at her softened, "Tell me the truth. Are you cheating on me?"

Mrs Jenkins burst out laughing, "pathetic little rat." she said and called for security

The security personnel arrived promptly, "Throw this fleabag out immediately." Mrs Jenkins ordered, as she looked at Xavier with utter disdain.

The security personnel grabbed Xavier by the arms and began to forcibly escort him out of the mansion.

He was being pushed towards and out the exit in the blink of an eye.

He had come here seeking answers and hoping to find his wife, but instead, he was met with insults, accusations, and the harsh reality of his crumbling marriage.

On reaching his house, Xavier had to hold back from shattering anything around him. He was filled with rage but he thought...

Wasn't rage an emotion for rich men? If he broke anything of value by accident, what would he use to repair or replace it?

Xavier sat down and stared at his feet which were sore from walking hours of a long distance since he used his last cash to reach his in-laws' place.

He thought deeply about the issue and replayed the scene he had witnessed.

"She stayed with me for three years. I know she's been complaining a lot and I want to give her the best but who is that man?" Xavier wondered.

"She can't possibly be cheating on me, could she? Maybe her parents are trying to force her to give another man a chance." Xavier clenched his fists, "I can't let that happen. I don't know how soon it will be but I swear everything will get better. I'll have to find a reasonable job this time. I can't lose her."

"I'll give her the luxurious life she longs for and I'll show her parents, I am deserving of their daughter," Xavier said, determined to change things for the better.
