Chapter 004

As the morning light filtered through the curtains, Xavier stirred from his sleep, the remnants of dreams fading as reality seeped in.

The muffled sound of his wife's voice reached his ears, tinged with an edge of nervousness that pricked at his senses.

With a yawn, Xavier rolled out of bed, rubbing the sleep from his eyes before padding towards the source of the conversation.

Kelanie's hushed tones ceased abruptly as he entered the room, a guilty expression flitting across her features which she hurriedly turned into an innocent smile as she quickly terminated the call.

"Good morning, love." Kelanie greeted Xavier as she rushed to hug him, "How was your night?"

"So yesterday wasn't a dream? It happened that my wife took care of me?" Xavier joked only to get a small pinch on his ear from Kelanie, hearing her giggle as well.

"You haven't answered my question," she said, leaning left and right with the hug and forcing Xavier to go along with it.

"Wonderful, I slept next to my beautiful wife, after all," Xavier replied, suppressing a frown on his face as his gaze landed on the phone Kelanie had placed on the kitchen counter.

Kelanie parted from the hug and smiled lovingly at Xavier. He smiled back and she picked up her phone, heading into the living room from the kitchen.

"Take a bath and get ready. I'll prepare breakfast in the meantime. We have to arrive at your boss's mansion as early as possible," Kelanie said to Xavier, although her mind seemed to be elsewhere.

"Okay, love," Xavier answered, watching her take a seat in the living room without giving him a second glance.

After a quick shower and having his breakfast, Xavier was ready to leave with his wife.

Stepping out of their home, he was shocked to see a car parked in front of their home.

To his utter amazement, Kelanie took out a key and unlocked it. His jaw dropped as she turned to look at him.

"What?" Kelanie asked.

"Where- How- This car... When did you get a car?" Xavier asked Kelanie.

For a brief moment, Kelanie had a shocked expression on her face, like she hadn't expected that question and wasn't ready for it.

"The car?" she asked.

"Yes. The car." Xavier answered, finally looking from the car to her face.

Kelanie smiled, almost nervously, "Um... It came with the contract. Your boss needs you around throughout the day until late in the evening so he provided transport for me to make things easier for you. Yes, that's it."

Xavier looked confused as he walked towards the car. Even if his boss was to provide a car for his secretary's wife, would he have gone for one that looked this expensive?

But then again, who was he to speak when he had never been that up in wealth in his life?

Kelanie placed a hand on Xavier's shoulder, "Don't worry. This doesn't mean anything. And besides, I believe you'll be better than that one day. You work hard and I appreciate it." Kelanie said.

"Now, let's go. I need to drop you off," she added.

Xavier made his way to the passenger seat next to Kelanie who started the car.

The engine purred to life as Kelanie skillfully drove the car out of the driveway and onto the familiar streets. Xavier couldn't shake the feeling of unease gnawing at him, the questions lingering in his mind like restless spirits.

He stole glances at Kelanie, noticing the subtle tension in her posture despite her attempts to appear composed. But for now, all he could do was push aside his doubts and focus on his first day of work.

Kelanie stopped the car in front of the tall gates of the mansion but didn't step on the brakes to fully stop, "This is your new workplace. Go inside, your boss will be expecting you." Kelanie informed.

She sounded off now. Her voice was cold, almost like how it normally was before her niceness yesterday.

"Alright," Xavier stepped down from the car and shut the door, "I'll make you proud, hon-"

Before Xavier could finish his words, Kelanie drove off without sparing him a glance. He hadn't expected that from her but he shrugged it off, thinking she was probably in a hurry to take care of something else.

Brushing off the slight pang of confusion, Xavier straightened his shoulders and made his way towards the imposing gates of his workplace. The sprawling compound stretched out before him, a maze of grandeur that seemed to swallow him whole as he ventured deeper inside.

Upon reaching the threshold of the grand estate, he was met by the butler, a man whose stern gaze belied an air of apprehension.

Despite the faint sense of unease that tugged at Xavier, he plastered on a friendly smile, eager to make a good impression.

"You must be Mr Xavier," the butler intoned, his tone tinged with a hint of scepticism.

Nodding in affirmation, Xavier extended a hand in greeting, his enthusiasm undimmed by the butler's guarded demeanour but his outstretched hand got ignored, forcing him to lower it awkwardly.

With a polite nod, the butler accepted the documents Xavier had arrived with and gestured for him to follow, leading him through the labyrinthine halls until they reached a dressing room.

The butler picked out some clothes and handed them to Xavier, "get changed." the butler instructed.

"I don't understand. Am I not dressed good enough for the job?" Xavier asked, taken aback by the butler's demand.

The clothes handed to him were not any better than what he had on.

"I don't know what planet you came from but workers with jobs like yours dress a whole lot differently." the butler frowned and walked out.

Xavier looked down at his clothes and then at the ones given to him by the butler, "I'm not the odd one out. There's something wrong with the butler but I'd rather not make trouble on my first day."

"Since my new boss bought a car for my wife, he must be so caring that he wouldn't want me stressing myself in a suit all day long." Xavier thought to himself.
