Special Card

Vera felt her heart racing as she pressed the call button. Her cell phone felt heavy in her hand because she was thinking about someone. Who else but William. The news about him had spread among their college friends, and it wasn't good. It was about him being kicked out of his host family's house.

Vera couldn't make it to Jordan's event. Hence, not knowing anything about Willliam's news. Now she couldn't avoid the worry that was growing inside her.

"Hello, Vera?" William's familiar voice finally came from the other side of the line. He seemed to be doing well, much to Vera's relief.

"Will, I heard you're no longer living at your foster parents' house?" asked Vera matter-of-factly. She had known for a long time that William was only an adopted son and had never made a big deal out of it. Being adopted doesn't make William look bad.

There was a moment of silence before William answered her question. "Yes, that's right," he said in a calm voice.

"Where are you now?" Vera asked again. Her heart was in turmoil, she couldn't cover it up.

"I live in a small apartment," William replied briefly. A hush fell over their conversation. From the way William spoke and the tone of his voice, Vera could sense that things were very difficult for her college friend.

She knew very well that a small apartment was not the ideal place for someone like William who had been living in the luxury of his adoptive parents' house. That's what Vera thought, without knowing that Sheryl and her two sons were treating William like a servant.

"Why didn't you tell me?" asked Vera with a hesitant voice that trembled on the tip of her tongue. "I can help you, Will."

"Don't worry about me, Vera. I'm fine." William assured.

"Do you have any money?" She knew the question might sound rude, but she needed to know the answer. William's current condition made her feel the need to ask directly.

"Emh... yes, I do," William replied, sounding a little confused. Even if for now, money was not a problem for William. He had an allowance that even if it was added up would exceed Sheryl's entire family fortune.

Vera sighed. She was quite grateful that William was okay.

"Will, come to my house tomorrow. It's my birthday and I'm having a small event at home."

William was surprised to hear these words. He just realized that he had forgotten that Vera's birthday was coming up. "Oh, alright. I'll come."

Vera realized the confusion in William's voice and quickly added an explanation so that her best friend would not feel guilty or burdened. "You don't need to bring a present, Will. Just come, my mom will make a big meal for you."

William smiled at these words. He felt warmed by the invitation from his best friend and felt lucky to have a friend like Vera in his life. Vera never judged William by his wealth.

"Yes," William said with a big smile even though it was only through their phone line. "I'll come later."

***

At night, in the middle of the silence of the small apartment where William currently lived, there was a sudden sound of the doorbell that broke the silence. William, who was sitting on the sofa pondering, was startled and immediately got up from his seat. He opened the door and was greeted by a courier in a professional-looking customized uniform.

"Good evening, I am the person assigned to deliver the package for William," the courier said as he handed over a mysterious package.

William received the package with deep curiosity. Since he moved into this apartment some time ago, this was the first delivery he had received. Carefully, he opened the package and found a luxurious black and gold box. Inside the box was a black and gold card that looked very exclusive. The logos of famous boutiques and elite stores adorned the surface of the card. On the back of the card, it was written that this card could be used to purchase exclusive items without restrictions almost anywhere.

William was surprised to see the contents of the package. He never asked for or expected anything like this. Why did he get an exclusive card from famous boutiques?

His curiosity got the better of him and he grabbed his cell phone to call Evan.

"What is this?" asked William once Evan answered his call, trying to hide the shock in his voice.

"It's a membership card at some famous boutique or store," Evan replied in a calm voice, as if it was something normal for William to receive.

However, to William, it wasn't ordinary at all. "Why should I have it?" he asked Evan again in a confused tone.

"You are no longer the William of old, Young Master," Evan said in a serious tone. "Use that card for shopping," Evan continued. "Your grandfather will be angry with me if you don't use it."

Lucas Anderson handed William this exclusive membership card. Evan explained again that this card could be used to shop for luxury items and had a sizable limit. In fact, up to 100,000 dollars. The minimum purchase is only 10,000 dollars.

William's grandfather had given William a great opportunity to change his life. Lucas would no longer allow his grandson to be insulted as a hobo and he had to think a lot when giving an item.

"Alright, I'll use this." William accepted it. Although he was initially confused and hesitant about how to use the exclusive card, he now knew what to do. He would use the card to give Vera a birthday present.
