Chapter 2

Gerald kept staring at her. He could not believe that his marriage which he had thought was perfect was crumbling before his very own eyes.

"And if I choose not to come?" Gerald asked her.

Fiona burst into a mocking laughter. She walked menacingly towards Gerald and used the tip of one of her fingers to brush some imaginary dirt from his body.

"What are you doing?" Gerald asked her while sounding suspicious.

"This is exactly what you are right now!" Fiona said.

"What? What do you mean by that?" Gerald inquired from her.

"Just the way I could easily brush the dirt on your clothes off with the tip of my finger, that exactly how easy it will be for me to brush you out of my way!" Fiona warned.

"Is that a threat?" Gerald asked her.

"No! It's a warning because divorce or no divorce, I will not let you get in my way of success!" Fiona threatened.

"And what will you do?" Gerald's eyes blazed with anger.

Fiona smiled ruefully at him.

"You don't want to know what I am capable of Gerald so you better come to the courthouse tomorrow so we can settle this thing legally or I will be forced to do it illegally," Fiona warned.

"What do you mean by Illegal? Will you kill me?" Gerald asked.

"You don't want to know Gerald, you don't want to know," Fiona repeated with deadly calm.

He had given Fiona his all. The money was not the main problem because he could easily make them back. The problem was her betrayal.

"Fiona please, don't do this to me! At this point in my life, I need all the support I can get to enable me to get back on my feet." Gerald pleaded with her.

"Do I look like a caregiver or a nanny to you? Are you lame that you want support till you get back on your feet?" Fiona jeered at him.

Gerald could not believe his ears. Fiona was more heartless than he had thought.

He had thought that if he could appeal to her emotions she would give in but to his surprise, she was more angry than she was before.

Gerald knew that there was nothing he was going to do that would make her change her mind since it was obvious that she was hell-bent on doing what she had planned to do.

Fiona's eyes blazed with anger at Gerald's pleas. It was as if his pleas were doing the opposite of what he had intended because instead of calming Fiona down and making her see reasons with him, she was getting more angry and irritated.

"Gerald stop it okay!" She yelled at him. "Stop begging me! You are making me look as if I'm a bad person which I'm not!" She accused him.

"So you are not going to change your mind about it?" Gerald asked. "You are sure you want this divorce?"

Gerald was already preparing his mind for the inevitable. It was obvious that there was nothing that he was going to do that would change Fiona's mind.

Gerald's pleas started turning to anger. He did not do anything to Fiona that would make her treat him the way she was doing.

He had been a faithful and loving and loyal husband to her and this was how she was repaying him for everything.

"Fiona, you will regret this!" Gerald said in anger.

Fiona started laughing at him. She laughed loudly and made sure the mockery was evident in the laughter.

"You seem to forget that you are the one at a disadvantage here Gerald. You are the ex-convict and not me! You will be the one to regret your life!" Fiona said.

"I have an appointment to meet with an important person for the next business deal so I will not have the time to listen to your pity party."

Fiona walked away from him back to her car but before she entered the car, she reminded him again not to forget to come to the courthouse the next day to finalize their divorce.

She entered the car and zoomed off leaving a trail of dust behind her.

Gerald was dejected and his legs could not hold him again. He saw a bench under one of the trees around the prison premises and he dragged himself to sit down.

Words could not express how Gerald was feeling as he was very hurt but he vowed never to cry both in the presence of his ex-wife or her absence.

Gerald was still lost in thoughts when he saw an old man with a walking cane walk towards him.

Gerald was wondering what business the old man had with him when the old man suddenly went on his knees immediately after he got to Gerald.
