Chapter 14

"What if Jordan actually made that payment?"

"Yeah, I agree. Didn't you notice the principal's reaction? I think he's going to address it."

"No way, he couldn't possibly pull that off. Look at his clothes—barely holding together."

"How could he have been able to pull out such a huge amount of money?" Whispers broke out.

"That can't be possible. He's the grandson of a janitor." Another person said.

"Well, he might have done something illegal to get such money. I hear that he's into drugs." A third person who I recognized as one of the quarterback's girlfriends spoke.

All eyes were fixated on me as their speculations continued. I would never have imagined that a day would come when I would have to start defending myself from being able to do things myself.

I had been ridiculed severally because of my poor status, now that it seemed like things were going well for me, they still had a problem with it.

"Why isn't he saying anything?" One of the girls asked incredulously.

I moved away from them slowly. They huddled together and spoke in hushed tones. "Have we misjudged him?" Alice, one of my classmates said and I pretended not to understand.

The girls took cautious steps toward me,

"Jordan, did you transfer the money?" One of them asked.

"What do you think?" I replied.

They glanced at one another in confusion. They apparently didn't understand why I would answer that way, or better still couldn't fathom wealth and I in the same sentence.

Diana on the other hand, stared at me warily. I watched her tap Mikky's hands as if to tell him not to speak a word.

Was that regret I saw in her eyes?

I scoffed at the thought. She had better stick to her decision because I wasn't going to take her back.

I opened my mouth to speak when the principal raised his hands.

My grandmother and Jake glanced at each other briefly before shaking their heads in warning so I didn't engage in conversation with Mikky. Oh, but doing that was tantamount to cowardice and admittance to fraud.

"Listen to me everyone, reports have gotten to me about how the less privileged are treated in this school and it has to end now." The principal said.

A good question.

"I didn't say he was a pauper." Someone blurted, cutting my attention away.

All eyes turned and landed on Alice again who was hitting her friend's arm slowly.

"She was the one who said that you wouldn't be able to amount to anything." She pointed at a girl with thick glasses.

The girl ducked immediately.

"Back to the question...how did you get the money?" My grandmother piped up. "I hope that you aren't involved in fraud. I raised you better than this."

I rolled my eyes at her disbelief.

"I am not a fraudster. You raised me better than that." I simply answered.

I heard snickers coming from the left and I turned to see Mikky staring at me with contempt in his gaze.

"Tell that to people who care to listen. You aren't the one who paid that money. You can't have such an amount at your disposal, you impostor." He fired at me.

Chatters filled the air as they contemplated if the words were true or not. "Am I?" I retorted sarcastically.

He adjusted his collar, feeling fly as his eyes blazed with a mixture of anger and more contempt. "Of course, I know this. You are only trying to seize this opportunity to back out from our agreement."

I grinned mysteriously. This was the perfect opening. I wasn't a fool to divulge the secret of my Langston Consortium.

"Jordan, where did you get the money from?" My grandmother piped up again with worry and I stared at her. My heart wrenched as soon as I looked at her.

"I won a lottery."

"What?!"

"I knew that he couldn't amount to anything."

"I should have known that it was just by chance." Some angry students spat, clearly disappointed.

“I can't imagine I already fantasize about him being the Mayor's son. So pathetic” Everyone burst out loud into laughter.

"I should have known... when you paid that money I had thought that maybe, just maybe, you have finally been able to do something tangible with your life. Alas, it's all a lie. You should take it easy with your new money behavior." I heard a familiar voice.

I raised my head just right in time to see Diana retreating to Mikky's side, making me smile inwardly. Gold-digger.

She turned to Mikky with a sickly sweet smile on her face. "Can you imagine the guts of this boy? I had thought that he was richer than you were. What was I even thinking?" She scoffed in exaggerated disgust.

Mikky chuckled like a maniac. "Oh, he can only try but would never be able to be like me, up to my standard."

"Right... So, this boy is here to remind you of our bargain." I interjected.

Everywhere fell silent, waiting to hear me defend myself.

Mikky raised his hands in the air. "What? Are you kidding me right now?"

"I kid you not, princess." I flung at him.

"Princ..."

"You heard me... You've been prancing around the school. It's time to honor your part of the bargain." I said.

Diana hissed painfully. "Can you imagine the nerve of this..."

"Enough, Diana. Let the princess speak." I cut her off.

Gasps filled the air as they waited for the drama to unfold. "You promised to strip naked if I didn't pay up the money." I reminded him. "I'm sure you didn't just lose your memory. Or are you a coward?" I shot at him.

"What the... Can you imagine this nit...?"

"...Who is able to pay up his bills while you aren't responsible enough to fulfill yours." I cut him off too before turning to the crowd. "I hope you're ready for some action today," I said in a sing-song voice, building anticipation in them.

"You have only one minute, Mikky, Strip!" I yelled.
