Chapter 9

Derrick was filled with a mix of emotions as he walked down the street. He was angry and he needed to take a walk, but he was also scared. He had no idea what Ruby would do in retaliation for his defiance. But he was determined to stand up for himself, no matter what the cost.

He knew he couldn't let her keep controlling his life. He had to take control back, even if it meant going against her. He had to be strong, for himself and for the people he cared about.

When Derrick came back into the house, he was surprised to see a woman sitting on the couch with Ruby. She was a stranger, but she seemed to be in some kind of authority over her. He watched as the woman spoke to Ruby, giving her instructions and orders. The tone of their conversation made him uneasy. It was clear that the woman had power over her, and Sean was worried about what that meant for him.

He stood there, frozen in place, as he tried to process what was happening. He was kind of surprised, because he thought Ruby was cold and wouldn't have friends.

He walked closer and the Ruby rudely called him.

"Derrick! Come here."

Derrick came closer to Ruby.

"This is my husband, his name is Derrick." Ruby announced.

"Hello. I'm Derrick." Derrick gestured his hand to shake the woman, but she waved pretended like she did not see him.

"She's my good friend, her name is Tiffany." Ruby continued.

"Ohh.. Tiffany." Derrick stuttered.

Derrick was even more confused now. If this woman was Ruby's friend, why had he never heard of her before? Why was she giving her orders, like a superior? And why was Ruby introducing him as her husband? They weren't even married!

He was totally baffled by the whole situation. He looked at the woman named Tiffany, and she gave him a cold, appraising look.

"It's nice to meet you, Derrick," she said, her voice smooth and calculated. "I hope we can get to know each other better."

Derrick could feel the hairs on the back of his neck standing up. There was something about Tiffany that made him uneasy, something he couldn't quite put his finger on. He didn't trust her, and he didn't want her around him or Ruby. But he knew he had to be careful. If he angered her, he could make the situation worse.

He had to tread carefully, or he could end up making a terrible mistake. "I'm sure we'll get along fine," he replied, his voice neutral.

"Get us some ice cubes," Ruby ordered, her voice sweet and sickly-sweet.

Derrick gritted his teeth, but forced a smile on his face. He didn't want to antagonize her, but he didn't want to be her servant either.

"I'll get them for you," he said, his voice tight. He turned to walk into the kitchen, his heart racing. He knew this situation was bad, but he didn't know how to make it better. He just had to play along for now.

Derrick returned to his room and closed the door behind him. He leaned against the door, his hands shaking. He felt trapped. He had no idea how to get out of this situation. He felt like a prisoner in the house. But he couldn't stand the thought of leaving Ruby. He was indebted to her, and he knew that he couldn't just walk away from her because she is his only source of income at the moment. He just had to find a way to make things work. He had to make things right with Ruby. But how?

Derrick opened his laptop and clicked on a news website. He started to scroll through the headlines, hoping to find something to distract him from his current situation. He scanned the news about the economy, the political situation, and the state of the world.

Nothing seemed particularly interesting or important to him. He felt numb. Nothing seemed to matter except for the situation with Ruby. He felt like he was trapped in a nightmare, and he couldn't wake up.

Derrick was about to give up on the headlines when his eyes caught up to something.

Derrick's eyes widened as he read the headline. "Ex-Wife Anna's Wedding Party?" He read aloud.

He could feel his heart pounding in his chest. He didn't know how to feel. He had mixed emotions. On the one hand, he was angry that Anna was moving on so quickly like nothing had happened after brutally humiliating him. But on the other hand, he was curious about her new husband. He wondered who he was and what he was like, why he suddenly got married to Anna and why he has to be the brother to Ruby.

But he knew that it wasn't his business. He shouldn't be thinking about Anna. He should be focusing on Ruby and a way to get out of her trap.

Derrick remembered the conversation he had with Ruby about Anna. She had warned him not to get too caught up in his ex-wife's life. She had told him that it was important to focus on the present and the future, not the past. He knew she was right. He needed to put his energy into his relationship with Ruby, not on dwelling on his ex-wife.

Derrick's mind reeled as he processed this new information. He couldn't believe it. He felt like the world was collapsing in on him. Ruby called out to Derrick and his heart was pounding as he walked into the sitting room. He saw that Ruby was alone, and he felt a mixture of relief and dread, her friend was gone.

He didn't know what to expect from her. Then, she handed him a blank piece of paper and asked him to sign it. He hesitated, his mind racing. What could this paper be? He was afraid to find out. He knew he had to sign it but he also shouldn't sign it.

"Sign that it you want to remain under me. After you sign, I'll write what ever contract I like on the blank paper which already have your signature." Ruby snapped and let out a cruel and loud laughter.
